Exploring Negative Space By Turning Rustic Bowl

I've wanted to explore negative space project. This is one that I thought of recently. It is rustic with voids between slices. UV resin "tack welded" slices together until more resin could be applied.
The center slice has a mortise on the bottom side for mounting to the lathe. However, the lathe was used only for measurement and holding. Measurement was the distance between the edge of the slice and a wooden platform mounted in the tool rest.
UV resin cures with ultra-violet light in contrast to two-part epoxy resin. I purchase the resin from Amazon - there are a lot to choose from.
My apple bowl is about 10 inches diameter and 3 inches high, finished with wipe-on poly.

Unique! I’m sure you remember tinker toys, maybe using some dowels and UV resin you could actually turn it on the lathe. 👍🇺🇸

I am not sure of your definition of "negative space" but I would classify this piece as an open segment turning. Maybe I am nit-picking. I also thought about trimming the pieces to form hexagons but then there would be no negative space. Same thought about using resin to fill in the voids. So in the long run I believe the approach you used is the right one for what you had in mind. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe.🙂🙂

hexagons are an option but as you said - then no negative space. But then the question about what angle to cut for the hexagons to cup up. Then you're venturing into dodecahedron space - a new frontier??? Alan

With six outside, cut or grind compound hex angle on three sides of each outside piece, and hex the inside piece. Not as rustic, but sturdier while keeping the rustic outside. Just another option.

I thought of that. One question back - Would you chamfer the joints so that the outer pieces angle up or leave them flat? Alan

I have never heard of you useing resion, but that would stabilize the form to turn in the lathe. Clear or a color pouring in a tilted pan on each segment, set & turn to next. Just trying to make it interesting.
