OMG those fall colours were amazing! This video has bumped Nyuto Onsen back onto my bucket list. Tsuru no Yu always looks amazing but it's too rustic for my partner to stay in I think, so it's good to know that it's an option for a day trip!

Day trips are definitely good. Also- the nearby Kuroyu that I showed toward the end has a couple of very modern rooms that are still done in a traditional style that might be OK for his standards.

Wow Quinlan thanks so much for this video, that scenery was breathtakingly gorgeous. I honestly could spent a couple of weeks in that one place alone, enjoying the onsen, and walking around through those beautiful woodlands. I need beauty like this right now… Thank you Quinlan. And thank you on behalf of people like me who have larger tattoos (not enormous but big enough for them to no be able to be hidden). The information about tattoos even with Google is hard to find sometimes, specially with the more remote ryokan/onsens one.

Yeah, I'm trying to start a list of the onsen in this area that are accepting. Hope that someday they outlaw this kind of discrimination.. but doesn't look like that will happen soon...

Dear Quinlan, thanks for showing this area and bringing back good memories. Pretty much exactly three years ago (before the world went crazy) I visited Nyuto Onsen and all the places you have shown: I hiked from Kuro Yu up near the river to the fumaroles and the wild bath (didn't dare to enter though, it was bubbling a bit menacingly), then all the way down via Tsuru no Yu to the very sketchy bridge and back to the road. Signage was ... well ... not great, but it adds a bit of excitement when you don't know if there actually IS a bridge. ;-)

Nice!! Well done on finding that bridge! I didn't even know about it until earlier this year when a local Japanese guide posted a photo of it. And yeah- love the area past Kuroyu with all the fumaroles.

Thank you! I remember checking the GSI maps beforehand, as these are often more accurate - yet not always up to date. 🙂 Hopefully I'll be able to visit Japan again next autumn and maybe Tohoku as well.

It's absolutely gorgeous this time of year. Thanks for sharing. My first Tohoku experience included a few days stay in Tae no Yu ( 妙乃湯) in this same area. I didn't know much about sake at the time but after tasting a few samples at the shop next to the train station we ended up with a bottle of Yuki no Bosha (Cabin in the Snow) to take to our lodging. It was late December and quite snowy so the tasty, local bottle of sake added to an amazing experience.

Thank you for this video. I followed this trail yesterday & visited Tsuru-No-Yu onsen & Nyuto Ganiba onsen. After winter the trail is currently well hidden, and there are a few fallen trees crossing parts of the path, but easy to get through. Glad I discovered your video. Cheers! 🇦🇺

I am going to be exploring the eastern coast of Tohoku after seeing your video on the Michinoku Coastal Trail this winter, I have several large and prominent tattoos. I have found some onsen in Zao amongst other locations more western but I haven't found any information on the many onsen found along the coastline. I am hoping my inquiring will not be seen as rude during my trip as that is what I planned to do.

Asking is never rude! They really need to just get rid of all tattoo restrictions on onsen if they are serious about encouraging tourism from abroad.

What a beautiful forest! The colors are so vivid :) I loved the hot springs in Japan. My most treasured onsen-memory was in Hokkaido, but I sadly don't remember where it was exactly. They had an outside area and so you could stay in the nice hot onsen, while the air was cold and because it was dark already, you could just look up and see the stars.

Autumn is the one season we've missed being in Japan so far. With spectacular displays like this we will have to do it next time. I love that there are still a few mixed bathing places still around - it is great for families, although often the onsens have private baths that can be reserved. Very cool Quinlan!

Up in this area I can think of 10 mixed baths off the top of my head. I think it might be a Tohoku thing... or at least that's where that culture remains. Hope you can come up here sometime in the autumn!

I'd be interested in if any of the onsen or ryokan that you've shown today are large tattoo friendly. I have a sakura tree on the front of my left shoulder that is a bit larger than my hand, large woman's gloves, and a trail of rat, yes pet rat, footprints across my shoulders in the back that I can't reach to cover, so they're definitely something that can't be hidden. I might be able to use Dermablend (supposedly waterproof makeup for covering birthmarks, etc) on the large one if I tried, but I honestly haven't given it a go since trying to cover my vitiligo 20 yrs ago, and that was much smaller. I'd recommend if you're hiking on a narrow path with slippery leaves like that to use a walking stick with a rather sharp or rubber tip or a trekking pole with a sharp tip that you can dig into the ground on the exposed side to stabilize yourself. It helps for less experienced hikers to feel safer. Quinlan I hope it's ok forme to brand name drop, if not let me know and I'll remove it. If anyone is looking for some very stylish hiking boots, or camping boots, booties, even various sneakers and slip-ons, I absolutely recommend the company Inkkas. They use Peruvian fabric prints as accent fabrics in limited runs on their shoes, so once they're gone, they're gone. (I missed out on a beautiful pink and purple crystal pattern and I'm so bummed) Their shoes are vegan and handmade, so they aren't cheap, but you should expect to pay $100-$150 USD minimum for hiking boots anyway and the patterns are gorgeous. They make mens shoes, womens shoes, and kids sneakers.

Recommending good equipment is all good! No problem brand name dropping! (Except for pure spam of course...) Osawa Onsen in Hanamaki is definitely ok with tattoos, as is Tsurunoyu in Akita. I really need to compile a list of them, but those are two really great ones that I can mention off the top of my head.

Quinlan, the drone shots of the vibrant color are just amazing! Olga was saying "segoi" almost every other second! It is still painful to see the clips of you walking away from, or toward your camera as you have to double the effort to get the shot--I don;t think it is worth it. Olga also wants to know how to find mixed gender naked onsen. Do you have any sources for that?

Off the top of my head, the following onsen have mixed baths: Osawa Onsen (Hanamaki), Tsurunoyu (Akita), Matsukawa (Hachimantai), Kuruyu (Akita), Ganiba (Akita), Aoni Onsen (Aomori), Toshichi (Hachimantai), Sukayu (Aomori).... There's tons of them up here in Tohoku! I need to compile a list of both these and ones that are OK with tattoos...

What an absolutely gorgeous place! A quiet walk through the forest followed by a relaxing dip in an onsen sounds like the perfect end to a day. This is probably a stupid question, but are the mixed baths swim suit friendly? I love the idea of being able to stay together with a group of friends in an onsen, but not so much being naked in mixed company 😅

Great question! Unfortunately, swim suits aren't allowed in any of the baths. You can sort of cover your upper body in a towel though as long as the towel doesn't get in the water.

Sorry for the slow reply! Definitely hit up the Nyuto Onsen area in Akita - Tsurunoyu in particular is gorgeous and I just went there recently with a friend that had a tattoo and it was fine (also no signs saying no tattoos). Osawa Onsen in Hanamaki is also really nice!
