Exploring Richloam WMA - Take 5

We head Back out to Take on another day at Richloam in hopes of finalizing the tracking of our route. Expecting another fight, we are pleasantly surprised by a pleasant and scenic ride as we complete our goal and reach the Richloam General Store and Post Office.

Love that area, the SWFWMD campgrounds are my go to place for free campsites and Richloam is good for dirt roads. Kayaking on the Withlacoochee River is nice. I knew you were going to make it to the store as I explored those roads last winter in my old Outback. The one place I didn't tackle was a big wash out near the eastern end of Center Grade Rd. as my Outback is all stock and I was alone but I've been to it from both ends. If you go camping there bring your own toilet though as the ones provided can be pretty icky. Would you say the main rds are stock 2wd friendly? Or 4×4 is a must? I have an explore 2wd with cooper A/T tires would love to check it out some time if it's safe for 2wd. Love ur videos bro. 🤘

Hey there, we are so happy your enjoying the content! The answer is yes the main roads out there are pretty safe for even a stock 2wd. The majority of the roads out there are maintained as a road base trail, or solid dirt trail. However being that it’s Richloam and it under goes a lot of changes due to the water that moves through it on a regular basis the road conditions do deteriorate from time to time. I know that’s kind of a wishy washy answer but for the most part you can go out there and drive some good sized maintained roads and be perfectly fine, if you run into messed up roads chances are it has recently deteriorated and will typically be fixed within a couple of months. I do strongly suggest not venturing out into the wooded trail system without a 4wd though. It’s one of the toughest places we have experienced to tackle with even a capable 4wd.

If you check out our website we have our wild sunshine trail available with several bypasses to bypass the swamp wheeling and it keeps you mostly on the main trail system. It’s definitely worth checking out as Richloam is a beautiful place showcasing the terrain of Florida’s swamps.

I used to work as a field scientist with SWFWMD and enjoy riding dirt bikes out here almost every Saturday. You would have no problem during Florida's dry season, from about Feb - mid June. I would even go so far as to say you could probably ride a mountain bike thru most of the trails north of SR50 as that is mostly hard-pack.
