Aye. Looking like I left it a bit too late to cover that piece of history. Maybe some way of getting safe access allowed, but doubt it.

I'd love to have the same positive outlook on life that Davie does. That and the intelligence Jenni has. Then I'd be unstoppable, lol

Notice that just below the "limited clearance" sign, a small part of the tunnel arch has been gouged out. This was to allow the passage of coal hoppers when they replaced the old sixteen ton mineral wagons.

Wow. Never noticed that and probably wouldn't have ever known. Brilliant. Thanks.

@@BogieOnPatrol originally the traffic going into the mill was coal for the boiler room, but latterly up until closure of the line in 1997, there was hoppers of China clay, (used to glaze the glossy magazine paper). At one time the mill had an extensive internal rail system to move items around the site, they even had a pair of fireless steam engines.

17 seconds in. Brilliant. Amazing to see. Can't imagine how much trust the driver had to put that the tunnel was wide enough, lol

@@BogieOnPatrol Hi there, I've got the old VHS video which shows the full operation of that line. There's a copy of it on eBay for £8.

That sign. I believe was a limited clearence? (sp) I remember walking along the path when the track was still there. Just after the junction to the leslie branch there was a spur into the sappi mill. I'm sure I still remember the actual gates at prestonhall/alburn I think it was called. Before the fencing the rail line continued along but im sure it was blocked by a metal fence or foliage. I always cut to the left towards the river and had to jump across some small sluice gates. I took you to a bit just above a weir and an outlet that flew right through tullis rusell itself.

I remember the lines coming across the road into the buildings where the new houses are, but never paid enough attention back then.

Yes the sign is definitely limited clearance which is an understatement in this case!

Now that you've said that I can make out part of the word CLEARANCE. I was looking on the walls to see if there were any gouges, maybe where there had been contact, but nothing significant. Still, i imagine it would have been frightening taking a train through that.
