The look on Jerry’s face when Leatherface runs into the room with the hammer raised, the actor looks like he is legitimately scared for his fucking life!! I think I once read something where Hooper said that shot was the first take, and the actor who played Jerry reacted that way because he had kept Gunnar away from the cast so they wouldn’t know what to expect.

This film is a masterpiece. Not only in filmmaking, but in acting. The way it’s filmed is so good, so gritty, it has that documentary style filmmaking, which makes this film more terrifying. So many great shots, I do love how Leatherface isn’t seen till the 36 minute mark in the movie, and his name isn’t mentioned till near the end of the movie, and the kills all happen almost all at once, which is also great. Drayton beating up Nubbins is just hysterical, I always get a laugh out of it, then Nubbins opening and slamming the front door of the truck not allowing Drayton to get out is also funny, Sally’s torturing is the best part of the film, the shots of Leatherface getting closer to Sally is just terrifying each time. The ending is just suspenseful. Is Sally going to get away? Then Leatherface throwing a temper tantrum, just so terrifying. This film is crazy.

What I LOVE about this movie is the pure psychological terror. You truly believe in every single one of Sally's screams and that her life is hanging by a single, thin thread.Franklyn is an interesting character to me.He is the only character in the film to come close to communicating with, and in a sense, relating to, one of the Sawyers...(the conversation with the hitch hiker)weird huh?Even more strange is that it's Franklyn who inadvertently causes their deaths when he gives them the faulty directions to the swimming hole, as if he's unknowingly getting his revenge for being treated as a burden to his group.Tobe Hooper has called Leatherface a 'big baby', and that seems to apply to Franklyn as well. Thumbs Up Jason😎👍

This movie is definitely one of my favourite movies of all time, I remember watching it the 1st time when I was young, getting to the end and just thinking "what the fuck did I just get through.." seen it tons of times now, it may not have any blood but the movie has such an amazing atmosphere and tone, it feels real, the low budget was a godsend, it worked great for them, years ago my parents who had only seen the remake and never bothered with the original, I showed them the original and then asked them what they thought, they just sat in silence for a few seconds, turned and said "weird", that's perfect to me, that's how I wanted them to react haha, but then I showed my 7 year old brother and he loved it to bits, I was so proud haha.

I like when you talk about the walking up to the house scene. When I was in college I wrote a comparison paper for my Film Appreciation class where I compared Psycho to TCM, basically saying that they were both based on the same guy Ed Gein, and there were vastly different styles used to scare people. I including screenshots of the Psycho house with the moon in the background and the shot of the house slowly growing larger in comparison with the actress in TCM.

Jason. If you're by some odd chance seeing this. I wanted to address a question you asked at the end of this video. Thanks for all you do! Anyways.. I'll get to it! I am 21. This is undeniably my favorite horror film. I have seen this film more than a dozen times. I am jealous of your Collector's Edition of the 4k. I already have 2 different 4k versions & a 2k transfer as well. However I'm still extremely tempted to get the one you've opened my eyes up to in this video. One of my favorite movie going experiences is showing this movie to friends for the first time. My favorite scene is Jerry walking to the house as the cymbal is crashing while the suns shines down in such a way that you can feel the heat... Beautiful. I think there is much of the disconnect among generations you're talking about. But I know it's not fundamental as I am a living example. xP

I don't believe Sally could have kept her sanity by the time the film reached the end. Maybe being institutionalized for awhile might bring her back, but her laughter in the back of the pickup sounds like it's coming from someone whose mind has snapped. Speaking of her hopping in the pickup, I once had a thought that would make the ending far bleaker. I imagined that she didn't realize it, but she'd just jumped into the grasp of the family, that this was the father behind the wheel. He was ticked off at Leatherface for his incompetence, so he was taking "dinner" back to the house to have the killing done right, while Leatherface was being "punished" for not getting the job done. I know the driver was someone else, but I couldn't get that thought out of my mind of Sally had been thinking she had been freed of the horror, only to see the truck was driving up to the hell house again. Now that's complete;y creepy, as she'd have a .complete meltdown of the mind,if it hadn't already occurred.

I don't think that was Pam's face though cause if you watch this fan film of the Texas chainsaw massacre in this link m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKvCemuVnL-LqpY and when you get to the end, it shows leatherface putting on that exact face from the original movie 🎥🎬 and the lipstick 💄 and makeup and then it shows a shot of the body who he originally skinned that face off and her face is all skinned the and well I won't give the rest of the ending away cause I highly recommend you check it out cause it looks so good and well made for a fan film and looks like it could have worked as a prequel to the original film, it even has that same documentary feel to it as well, I will admit though that leatherface is my favorite horror movie character, the fact that he skins his victims faces off and then wears it like a mask just fits the bill perfectly and the fact that he was basically one of the first horror movie killers before Michael Myers and Jason voorhees and Freddy Krueger, he basically was the real deal especially that they based his character on Ed Gein the serial killer from Wisconsin, also the fact that the later films actually show gore and this one doesn't as you said despite the title when it first came out is even more terrifying cause they say what you can't see is more terrifying than what you can see, it is like you have to use your imagination in a way of how it would have looked like if they did show it, but in your mind, for example when Kirk is getting cut up as well as Franklin later in the wheelchair. ♿ even though you can't see it happening, but you can picture it in your mind of how it would probably look, it's a shame that Gunnar Hansen has passed away cause he was the best one out of every person to play leatherface, he was that good, it's a shame Tobe Hooper the director passed away as well, even the original trailer to the the Texas chainsaw massacre describes this movie perfectly, also the house is actually a restaurant now.

Great review! I absolutely love this movie. It took me a while to appreciate it because when i first watched it as a kid, i was looking for gore. I thought this had to be the bloodiest movie ever with a title like this. However it is far from being a gorefest. The best term to describe this movie is probably disturbing. As you pointed out, just the thought of being in a situation like this is terrifying and the way the movie is shot is much like a documentary. It is like watching a snuff film. I also really enjoy the remake.

Just got to the end, as for the whole "new generation" thing, personally i'm only 19 and i grew to love these films as a kid, been watching them for over half my life and i can guarantee YES! i look at movies like this, Halloween etc as masterpieces, i'm always in awe watching them because of their countless strong points, but i'm someone who's incredibly excepting and open minded anyway, you say you don't enjoy the really old black and white early 1900's films... where personally i adore them, i find them genuinely interesting and enjoyable, there are still modern films i can really enjoy but i don't know... there's just a magic in older film that can never be beat, like this film, it's a masterpiece that i watch 3-6 times a year where as the remake to this film, yes it's one of the better remakes for sure but i don't get this "Wow... this is awesome" feeling with it like i do with the original or even TCM2, (there's tons of other examples, variables etc i could go into) but yeah i do know what you mean, there's definitely people who i get the impression that they're not really THAT into things, i don't know if it's an age thing or a personal taste thing though, because there's plenty of older people, 10-30 years older then me who i try to watch older films with and they think they're stupid and boring, it's less about what generation you're in and more your personal taste/ability to recognize and appreciate good film when you see it and also nostalgia and being brought up with things definitely helps, where as a lot of people just don't look at film as an art form, just as stupid entertainment and don't even try to think about deeper meanings and emotions etc when watching film in general.

MechaMinilla99 You sound a lot like me. I'm older than you are but I grew up in the 90s watching and enjoying many older films, particularly horror, that other people my age didn't really get. I remember kids at my school talking about seeing the movie Anaconda, and I just thought "you think that's a horror movie?" It was very tame compared to what I was raised on. I thought "Watch Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer then talk about scary." I first saw the TCM when I was very young. I can remember being scared by the realism of it, like I was watching some horrific nightmare that was actually happening. But I also remember being so impressed by the talent it would have taken behind the scenes to create something so genuine and brutal. And of course, Leatherface was a horror icon by this point so naturally I was very interested in the movie. The 90s did not produce many films that are in that league in the horror genre. It was kind of disappointing to look at what was coming out then in comparison to previous decades. The Silence of the Lambs was certainly a masterpiece and I saw that in the theater. Se7en was amazing. But older films definitely have a purity about them, they were not trying to pander to audiences in such an obvious way like more modern films do. Though every decade does produce its share of unforgettable movies, I don't think the 70s or 80s will ever be topped for horror.

I was wondering if you know any good places to go for horror memorabilia, and also if you know any horror film festivals out by where we live. I'm 27 and have a truck, so I can make it to festivals if you know of any. Thank you. Ever since I found your channel 2 months ago I have never looked back. cool review. I appreciate this film for what it is, but don't have the love for it that a lot of others do, and that's primarily because of my age. I'm an old man but not old enough to have seen this when it first came out. And by the time I did see it, I'd already been exposed to Halloween, the Shining, F13, etc, so I was kind of robbed of the impact that I may have felt from the film if I'd been born 10 or so years earlier. I do agree with something you said several times in your review though. If you take the time to imagine yourself in the place of certain characters and imagine how terrifying that would be in a real life scenario, then yeah, the movie is terrifying. And from a technical standpoint I love the grainy look of this film because it adds realism. That's one of the things I find most frightening about Halloween - the way it was shot. If I walked behind a masked killer and filmed his escapades on my smart phone tonight, I think it would look a lot like the look of the film print of the original Halloween.

Sinister Cinema Reviews yeah probably some controversial placings. But I absolutely LOVE the remake and the beginning. I think its such a shame there was never another sequel in that canon. Couldn’t happen now with the passing of R Lee Ermy. As he was part of what made those films so great and imo is probably the best character in the whole franchise, I think I read somewhere most of his lines was improvised as well. I also controversially think Andrew what’s his name makes a better Leatherface, and Jessica Biel in 2003 was the perfect final girl. She went from being scared shitless to fighting for her life in such a great way. I think she’s one of the only final girls in the series to stop running and actually fight back. Also I love the original movie, don’t get me wrong. But I believe TCM is one of the only cases imo where the remake is better than the original. I normally detest remakes lol.

Buddy, I can tell you right now that I'm of the younger generation, in fact I'm 18, but if I don't enjoy a film, I won't force it on myself to like it. I love TCM, in fact it's in my top 3 horror films of all time, but I'll also tell you that I'm not the hugest fan of The Shining, or Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, which are both revered classics of the horror genre (I suppose the latter is more of a cult classic). But I do love classic horror genuinely; 70's and 80's horror is much more appealing to me than any other generation, though there is no generation of horror I just won't watch. I agree with you on everything about TCM though! Marylin Burns' portrayal of Sally's descent into insanity is some of the most phenomenal acting I've ever seen in a movie. An interesting piece of trivia too, when Leatherface cuts in to Sally's finger for the grandfather to drink her blood, Gunnar Hansen actually cut her finger. There was originally a piece of scotch tape around the blade, and a tube going up Hansen's sleeve that was supposed to spurt fake blood onto her finger as if it was cut, but the tube kept on malfunctioning, so Hansen pulled the tape off the blade, the tube out of his sleeve, and said "this is the last time" that they'd be shooting the scene. Been loving your reviews, man!

I think this guy is really GENERALIZING the "new generation". HE seems to think that EVERYBODY among the "new generation" should like nothing in a movie but computer visuals and action and "bumping" rap/hip hop/thrash metal/emo music on the soundtrack or some such bullshit! Well NEWSFLASH! .. . people among the "new generation" are not ALL THE SAME! No, people among the "new generation" have different tastes and sensibilities and mentalities just like people among any other generation do. Also, one doesn't necessarily always have to have "grown up on" something to enjoy or admire it! Anyway, I wonder, does THIS guy, and this Andrew Becker jerk, similarly doubt the "validity" of people who admire those old classic paintings, like the Mona Lisa for example, in galleries? .. . after all, THEY were all painted centuries before THEY or anybody else alive today was born! .. . or what about those classical music buffs? . .. same thing with THEM! . . and, for that matter, people who look at dinosaur skeletons in museums?!

Roxanne Shuster you’re definitely correct in the misuse of generalizations. It’s not supposed to apply to everyone though. Just the majority. Much like I doubt many kids today would be that into silent era films or WW2 documentaries, but I do know they exist obviously. I wouldn’t put too much thought into it. Be proud that you are who you are and that you are different than the majority of people your age. I’ve interacted with a lot of people over the years in the horror community and for the most part, kids in their late teens and early 20s don’t really appreciate subtle horror. A lot of them grew up on fast-paced, jump scare heavy horror so that’s what they’re used to. Have I met kids that like these kinds of movies? Absolutely. one of my best friends is 20 and loves older slower burn stuff more than me. We talk about it a good amount and he says that all of his friends and people he went to film school with and high school with hate slow burn horror, and even horror in general most of the time. But yes, you are correct about one thing. Andrew Becker is a jerk 😈
