Exploring St Nicholas Church in Arundel, West Sussex

Today it is my pleasure to meet John Barkshire, one of the stewards of St Nicholas Church in Arundel in West Sussex, John very kindly agreed to show me some of the many curious artifacts to be found in the well cared for church on offer for the visitor.These include the curious witches circles scratched on the pillars, the amazing stone carved pulpit, the Anglican nave and altar and the private Catholic chapel that belongs exclusively to the Duke of Norfolk; all within the same building.

Before visiting Glyndeborne from Japan in August 2019, my friend and I stayed two nights near Chichester and walked around Arundel castle. When I visited this church on a Monday, the kind and knowledgeable gentleman, John guided us❢ This post teaches me so much information which I failed to catch because of my poor listening, thank you. I do miss Arundel.

My second viewing of this very interesting video about this stunning church . I am now lucky enough to have started as part of a team of Church Recorders who research, discover and record the creative art, craftsmanship and all things worthy of recording inside the nation's places of worship .... I've started with my mentor recording the choir stalls and carved bench ends

Great video and an impressive guide. I often wonder why Victorian 'restorers' merrily carried on removing the colour from wall paintings, they must have known at some point what damage they were doing, even if it were just from looking at the pigment in the waste water in their bucket.

St Nicholas was just an amazing church & John was such a distinguished gentleman. He did a fabulous job showing & sharing the churches history w/ us. Loved those carved pews & the Medieval graffiti. Too bad the Victorians destroyed those hidden paintings!😱 Also that castle w/ the fall leaves in the foreground was gorgeous! Hope I can find a video on that too! Loved everything I've seen you do on Arundel so far - what a beutiful town (btw... isn't Arundel the name of the town from Frozen🤔🤣😉).

Frozen what? (is that a film or something?) Yes, a lovely church. Arundel castle is one of the famous castles in England.

@@RichardVobes 😯😯😯!!! Wow! You obviously aren't around kids much.😄 Yes Frozen was a Disney movie from 2013 about Elsa & Anna. Its about 2 sisters that are supposed to be of Scandinavian descent, one of which becomes the Ice Queen. I think it is loosely based on a Hans Christian Anderson story but more happy & about "sisterly love." Frozen II I think comes out this Christmas. Funny thing is their Arundel is also a castle butted up right against a village and the water. Their's being a seaport & your's (England's) being a river port. But still, I find the similarities uncanny!

When entering the church, has anyone else ever experienced a squeezing pressure on their windpipe? I went there years ago and this happened to me, as soon as I left it went.

I think the private chapel of the Dukes of Norfolk is accessible to paying visitors to Arundel Castle as part of the 'package'. At least, it was when I went there about 10 years ago. There are some very impressive tombs and monuments.
