My first visit to Victoria was in August of 2003, and I LOVED it. I've been back twice since then. Finally got to stay at The Empress, and we did get "fancy" and do high tea lol. Next time, we'll stick with Murchie's though, I about fell out when I got the check after tea at the Empress!! LOL. Victoria is definitely one of my favorite cities! Thanks for sharing your adventures,, gives us a heads up for when we visit the places you go!! 🙂

oh, nostalgic vibes. I am heading to Vancouver Island in June. I can't wait to get up to the picturesque, Elk Falls. First of all, I am flying into Vancouver in June. I am taking the ferry across from Vancouver Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay Victoria. I'll stay with a childhood friend I have known since grade 1. I will rent a scooter and travel around Dallas Road. After a few days, I'll rent a car to go up the island to Campbell River to visit family and friends. I am definitely going up to Elk Falls. After a couple of days, I am going back to Victoria. I am super excited about the trip. Thanks for making this vlog. The internet appreciates it.

We started watching your channel because we are going to Italy in September and loved your videos on Italy. They were so informative. We then got hooked on checking out a lot more of your videos. You guys do a great job of providing great video and great information. Thanks so much. We are really enjoying your trip north to Alaska. We visited there about 15 years ago when I first retired. We took a truck with a camper in the bed and spent 5 months on the road up there along the Alaskan Highway and then south again. We took a ferry from Haines Alaska to Prince Rupert BC. It was so much fun. We would highly recommend it. I wish we would have gotten off at a couple of stops along the way to explore some the cities along the inside passage. At Haines there is a forest service campground just a short ways north of town and to get there you have to drive along a river. We were there in July or August, I can't remember for sure but the salmon were running and in the evening there were a lot of grizzlies and eagles having a feast along the river. It was a great time. We highly recommend it. We were also wondering if you ever eat at a place where you really don't care for the food? Every single video we have watched you rave about the food. We do love your channel and have recommended it to others. Keep up the great work. Larry and Carol Young
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! We're unfortunately not going to the Inside Passage this trip. We'd love to visit, but just don't have the time, it's logistically challenging with a dog, and it's expensive. It does sound amazing though! As for the food we eat on the vlog....we do a TON of research ahead of time before deciding where to eat. With a limited budget and not eating out a lot we want to make sure the place is high quality and has great reviews. We never just wander into a place and we are also pretty easy to please when it comes to food. There has been a couple times where I haven't totally enjoyed some food items on the vlog. For example, boiled peanuts in South Carolina and fried artichoke in Italy (although I would give that one another shot). Thanks again for watching and for recommending our channel!

Murchies is my go-to coffee/tea place in downtown Victoria. But I’m going to be there for a couple of weeks in early July (husband’s work conference) and this time I’m absolutely 100% going to treat my 86 yr old Mom to High Tea at the Empress - neither have us have ever had that experience and I think we deserve the luxury of it! We’re also moving out of province to the other side of the country next year. My Mom absolutely deserves this treat. Thank you for visiting so many of the places I won’t have a chance to get back to for awhile. It was wonderful to see Vancouver Island in all it’s Spring lushness - so vivid and colourful. Truly one of my favourite places in the world. Safe travels on the rest of your journey. Oh, and if you have the time/inclination maybe make a bit of a detour and visit Barkerville. It’s the last stop on the Gold Rush Trail where people from all over the world descended to try to strike it rich in the gold fields. Wonderful, wonderful place and there’s 2 really nice campgrounds, much like Goldstream, for an overnight stay.

Born here in 69. My big brother and I when we were kids (summer of grade 3 and 4) use to ride our bikes to town, lock them to the railing in front of the Douglas building, take the stairs to the Basement, then take the tunnel that led to the East side of the Parliament building first level basement. There is a tunnel that leads to the Empress. Way back in the days, the Royals when they stayed at the Empress would use the tunnel underground systems for security reasons. My brother and I spent 3 weekends/ many hours exploring the Underground network in and around the Parliament buildings in the summer of 1977. The first room we walked into had the door open, was full of all the plans of the Parliament building, surrounding building/ structures. We scanned all the planes for anything that had dashed lines and took notes. All of a sudden, we had a feeling someone was watching us. We looked at the door that we had left open a crack like we found it, to see an eyeball staring at us, the door opened to the Guard asking where our MoM was, I replied she is working in the Douglas building. The guard told us he did not have a problem with us being there, as long we put everything back, and you did not steal anything. As the guard was closing the door, he said, " You boys know there is treasure around here". My big brother and Eye looked at each other, as if to say, If there was, we will find it. Well Over the Average tourist has no idea how extensive the underground network is in this city. Take Government street for instance where that whale bush is, if you walk almost to China town, and look back towards the House of Parliament, you will see a hump in the road, that hump never use to be there/ when you walk into the stores on that hump, you are actually walking into the second floor of those stores. Where that hump is, if you walk west to the water, you will see a parking lot that has a retaining wall built from large rocks. those large stones were from the ballast of the old long-range sailing ships from South America, British Isles and Europe or so the story goes. The guy that built the Parliament, Empress and a few other buildings left too many clues about the so-called treasure that is hidden under this city. One of the best free things to do in this city is the Directed Tour of the Parliament building. As they tell you Gene wanted to fill the Decor of Parliament with so much gold trim, but it was shot down because it would have shown that house had too much of it. Gene was also rumored to have been kill in some sex scandal and died penny less as he was taken for everything he was worth as it was evident that he new something. Or so the story goes.

It’s very common to come across wild peacocks, especially in Beacon Hill park where they are protected from traffic and people disturbing their nesting areas. You’ll find a lot of peacocks in Victoria, Vancouver (especially Stanley Park) and there’s an area in Surrey (which used to be a “bedroom” community of Vancouver but is now a sprawling City) called Panorama/Strawberry Hill where they are more than abundant. (Just a little tip from someone who grew up there & visits regularly)

Thanks for saying that. We love to learn about and share the First Nations people and culture in Canada and indigenous people and culture in the US when we can. We think it’s important for people to understand that it isn’t just history. It’s not just stuff from the past, but it’s real life people living in the now

I feel like my moment has arrived to be helpful. As a Brit, I'd describe your tea experience as a 'cream tea'. This is when you have tea and it's served with a scone accompanied with jam and clotted cream. By the looks of your shots, I think you guys had just whipped cream, but clotted is amazing (albeit very calorific). There's so much more to this too - the battled between Devon and Cornwall - Cornwall insists on putting jam on first, Devon insists on the cream first. Then there's the confusion behind afternoon tea and high tea. Afternoon being the one you described, and high tea being a regular meal eaten late afternoon or evening. Northerners will still often call their evening meal 'tea' but southerners give me weird looks when I slip into old habits and use that term! I've never know anyone to cut them in half the way you both did. We always cut them through the centre so there's a top half and a bottom half! As for the pouring of the tea, it may not have helped that you had narrow mugs instead of wide tea cups. You can tell us Brits take our tea waaaay too seriously! 🤣 LOVE that you watch Bake Off. Everyone seems to love it here. It's just a really happy, feel good programme, no backstabbing or nastiness like other reality shows can have. I remember going to Beacon Hill Park, it doesn't look like it's changed much, but it was my attempt to make up for not going to Butchart Gardens as my backpackers budget could not stretch that far, but did not know about its history! I wish I'd known about the waterfall - I caught the local bus out to Thetis Lake on a really hot day - went for a dip in the lake and a wander around, but I'd have stayed on the bus had I known that waterfall was just a bit further up the road - gorgeous!

Thanks for all the info on tea! We knew we were in way over our head on British tea culture and tea in general really! We've heard a bit about the Devon/Cornwall debate and think that's very interesting! I thought about cutting the scone length wise, but it was crumbly and I didn't want to destroy it so I thought the best move was the way I did it 😂 We'd love to learn more about the tea culture and experience it more and the different versions like you mentioned! I really like Bake Off, but mainly the seasons with Mary Berry. I did read about some controversy of favoritism on the show for a few of the seasons though! 😨 But other than that I learned a lot from it and it is a fun show to watch! Ya we didn't want to spend the money on the Butchart Gardens this trip either. It does look very nice!
