I like Lovecraft's best works, but lets not forget a couple of underrated writers who are comparatively forgotten. Lovecraft loved the works of Arthur Machen, & after reading many of Machen's stories I can see why - like Lovecraft, he relied on an accumulation of detail to create suspense & atmosphere - some of his best stories are : "The White People", "The Novel of the Black Seal", "The Great God Pan", & many others of high quality. Another writer who indulged in similar themes was Clark Ashton Smith, one of those writers who were allowed to borrow from Lovecraft's Mythos theme, & created many colorful & inventive stories of horror & dark fantasy. Two of my favorites who deserve to be put on the same shelf as Lovecraft.

It has been loosely adapted to the screen in The Color from the Dark (2008), The Curse (1987), and Creepshow (1987) in the segment The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, written by and starring Stephen King. Most people either don’t know or acknowledge that most of King’s works were adaptations of Lovecraft stories, or at the very least, were structured within the Lovecraftian subgenre.

Maybe curved time is a sort where you can only witness one outcome to any given event, whereas in angled time all possibilities occur simultaneously? Like, for us, timelines "curve" away from each other, whereas in angled time they intersect and overlap in a lattice. That might also explain why the Hounds of Tindalos are also able to jump so naturally from one time to another.

It just popped into my head that the Mi-Go could be effectively just insectile creatures, and that their fungoid appearance might actually be a sort of symbiotic mold colony that grows on and in their bodies, contributing in some way to their overall health and perahps even networking into their intelligence somehow. Such a crossbreeding of plant and animal would certainly have horrified Lovecraft, who wasn't even comfortable with having people of Anglo-Saxon stock making babies with Eastern Europeans and the like. Cyborgs and symbiotes would have been a whole other level of what-is-this-I-can't-even for him.

At the time Lovecraft was writing, the word "polyp" probably exclusively referred to the tiny undersea animals which produce coral reefs. It's a lot more disturbing if we pretend the description originates in our time, and refers to cancerous growths within the human body, making the flying polyp a truly repulsive thing to behold, even if you don't share HPL's aversion to sea life. How fortunate that they're usually invisible.

Angular time at least from my perspective is based off of intensity. Time is more intensive close to a black hole. Theoretically would angular time be a dimension in which time is increasingly more intense, least intense at the start of the universe and getting more the farther away from that it is?

TheExploringSeries You make a valid point. But honestly I feel HP's Earth-centricity cancels out his overarching themes. I mean Cthulu is on earth! Why would an incomprehensible mega being need to sleep, let alone in a sunken city on Earth? It is hard to say, humans are tiny and insignificant... When all your stories revolve around crazy important deities/creatures either directly or indirectly interacting with insignificant humans on an insignificant speck in a vast expanse. Thoughts?
@TheExploringSeries
@TheExploringSeries 7 жыл бұрын
The argument is that, Lovecraft, writing about Humans interacting with these alien beings, won't have much knowledge of these beings or their interactions with other sentient beings in the vastness of space. Again it comes down to your interpretation and feelings about the Mythos, but I prefer to imagine that an alien version of Lovecraft millions of light years away wrote about his species interacting with the great old ones.

I have a hard time seeing anything Lovecraftian as horrific. It all resembles visions I've had while on shrooms combined with opiates. Weird tentical-y creatures, amalgams of earthly beasts, alien oddities with a million eyes, etc. and none of these trips are dark or terrifying. Quite the opposite! Shrooms is a beautiful and sacred experience with no horror to be had. All that said, I think Lovecraft's inspiration for these things came from the same part of the brain that is activated while on tryptamines (psilocybin is a tryptamine, so is DMT): the Fusiform Gyrus of the visual cortex. It's responsible for processing eyes and teeth, and its immediate peripheries are implicated in perceiving biological forms.

Lovecraft suffered from horrific night terrors which is probably what fueled his creativity when it came to cosmic horror. I believe similar hallucinogens are released into the brain during sleep from my understanding.

“Unique and horrifying.” Not in my personal opinion. I’m sure when they were created they were the talk of the town but now they just seem like Lovecraft drew pieces of paper out of a hat with random body parts written on them. Sprinkle in some weird time or mind bending abilities and add “horrifying” as a descriptive and badabing you got a genuine Lovecraft “thing.”

Some of them, others are merely slowed down by weapons in the 1930's. Though, pistols, and small caliber rifles are completely useless. Shotguns, and light machine guns are the best way to go on personal weapons level, but even then you are going to need plenty of ammo, and make sure to have plenty of gasoline, axes, and grenades just to be safe.

@TheExploringSeries
@TheExploringSeries 8 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid that's a no on the Xothic Cycle. It's just too far removed from Lovecraft, which is what this focuses on. After Middle Earth, I might put it up to a vote, but I've got a lot of things in mind, such as Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Marvel or DC, or even real life mythologies like Roman or Greek.

I started with The Call of Cthulhu. Other great ones are Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Dunwich Horror. Takes a little getting used to if you haven't read any of his stuff before, but he was a brilliant author. The Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft contains most of what you'd be interested in, and if you buy it through the link in the video description, it helps me out a little.

What exactly is "Angle Time"?
@Heb_N
@Heb_N 8 жыл бұрын
ThatGuyWithTheTripod we wouldn't be able to fully understand it since its existence is utterly foreign to us, but I think the best way to interpret is like this: think of time time as a circle. A circle is round because it curves, you would never think that a circle has vertices since its almost perfectly round, but if you manage to look close enough, you will see a shift in direction, a vertex, an "angle". and there... in that seemingly tiny window of time and space... is a whole other dimension, with who knows what's on the other side, watching... waiting... for the opportune moment to tear us all a new one.

***** So it's like a circle made in Minecraft? It looks round from a distance, but up close you can see all of the blocks.
@Heb_N
@Heb_N 8 жыл бұрын
ThatGuyWithTheTripod that's a good example, everything has an "angle" so to speak. Countless vessels, races, life forms, and sentient things could live within a vertex. it's the infinite, and the infinite is pretty scary if you really think about it. These stories may be science fantasy, but with the endless Universe around us growing immensely by the day, I definitely would not put it past us if we see a huge, incomprehensible "larger than Jupiter" clump of flesh mass hurdle toward a minute earth, or anything of the like
