Great video! It's a shame you missed Secret Agent Barbie though. Essentially a Metal Gear Solid clone complete with stealth, enemies with vision cones, VR training missions, etc. It was surprisingly competent for being a game aimed at children.

Lets be fair if you grew up with a sister, you are bound to see them get a Barbie game and you'll eventually give them a play for some reason. I remember that some of my first games I played when I was a kid was the Nancy Drew games and Detective Barbie on the PC that my older sister got for X-Mas or B-Day.

Playing your sisters games is often a reason you got into a series. I remember for the holidays one year I got Jak 3 and my sister got Kingdom Hearts. I remember one day being bored I just booted up Kingdom Hearts and really loving the game. Years later I've played most of the games. Same for Pokemon.

I cannot speak for the entire audience of Barbie (2023) but I know that, what appealed to me, wasn't a deep love for the character or franchise, but the embracing of Camp. Which I feel has been DEEPLY missing from the cinemas lately. Not even to say I watched Ironically. I love Camp. I think it's a very broad form of joy in entertainment.

You'll be waiting until 2129, at the earliest, for the IP to slip into Public Domain, and that's if Mattel ever folds (already a possibility at this point). I could be wrong, but I came up with that number by: 1959 (year of Barbie's creation) + 100 years (a creation lifespan) + 70 (the posthumous duration that U.S. copyright holds for). But, if we're going by Ms. Handler's lifespan (somewhat unlikely), it could be sooner than 2129. Did I ruin the joke?

If you want another Mattel IP to talk about, try out Hot Wheels. The two recent Hot Wheels games from Milestone are fantastic games, But it was a long road to get to the Unleashed series. I believe you'll find Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Driver to be very fascinating.

Pretty sure I can guess without watching, 50% sexism and 50% not understanding that they just want to play good games like anyone else, they don't need to be 'aimed' at. Girls liked Tomb Raider just as much as boys did. Without sexist social conditioning there wouldn't be any 'girls' or 'boys' anything, we're all just brains in a biomechanical suit that happen to have something different between the legs, there is zero biological basis for interests being aligned to gender, the obvious example being the colour pink, which for hundreds of years was considered masculine, in fact when baby clothing was first coloured and not just white, it was pink for boys and blue for girls, but marketing swapped it at some point and here we are a hundred years later

As a man I am not ashamed to say that I did infact enjoy watching barbie growing up,Maybe it was the vibrant colors that tingled my childlike brain and the adventures they went through that made me look in awe but barbie has always been a nice memory for my childhood and honestly,Most of the games range from being either meh to okay,My younger sister is a huge barbie fanatic so yeah I had to sit down and play those wii barbie games with her,it was fun times,but I never realised the shit amount of games barbie has,almost as much as the endless movies.

I think we should normalize men and boys enjoying media that isn’t just edgy, angsty, or violent. Growing up is realizing how many guys actually enjoy cute stuff but never say it out loud. Girls and women can enjoy cute stuff and are praised when they enjoy “guy stuff” too but we don’t give men the same grace. It’s weird how that goes.

Gman, as a long-life fan of yours (about 7 years I believe) I love that you are going out of your comfort zone to review different genres of games. I actually had a bit of a history with Barbie video games itself. I played the hell out of Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus on PC. It was actually the first video game I was able to complete as a child, and holds a special place in my heart. Tho I didn’t play it too much, but the 12 Dancing Princess for the DS was known to be difficult, pretty much the equivalent of Dark Souls back in the day.

OMFG Thank you for including Race and Ride, you brought back long-forgotten memories of a game me and my siblings actually loved. We’re boys but we didn’t see this as that much of a girly game. Just a horse and exploring game with a woman narrator. We had a bunch of different PC games from Kids Tonka sims with the attachable wheel on the keyboard, to a civil war strategy, to this and the Hunting game where you play as a deer. Another one with a 2D point-and-click rabbit character I can’t completely remember.

It is absolutely insane, and a reflection of the "gaming" space in the 90s, that Barbie outsold Quake having only 2 months to do so in the year with Barbie being released in November and Quake being released in June. It had 2 months to catch up and pass arguably one of the most influencial FPS games ever made. And it did. Wild. Absolutely wild. W Barbie.

I know the feeling, when I'd play origins on Black ops 2 zombies when I'd upgrade my staff I'd have to ask someone to line up the turnable light things if I got the ice or lightning staff.
