Exploring The FAR SOUTH PHILIPPINES! Sitangkai to Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi

YOU CAN'T GO FURTHER SOUTH IN THE PHILIPPINES THAN THIS!
Today, we're exploring the Philippines Far South! From Sitangkai to Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi, we will see the unique life of those at the end of the Sulu Archipelago.
Here, we are so close to Sabah and the Celebes Sea. After exploring the floating market of Sitangkai at high tide this morning, we took the manliest speedboat we could find all the way to Sikulan Island, part of the municipality of Sibutu, and the southernmost island of the Philippines.
Its lighthouse dates back to 1827, but unfortunately the metal has rusted away after all of those years, so we can't climb it.
The community here makes its livelihood from seaweed - and we can see this everywhere!
I would have loved to have explored Sibutu more - but we've run out of time. With a flight to catch the next day, I had to go back to Bongao, where we were treated to sea mantis!

Sitangkai has changed since we were there in 1978 during Martial Law to document the lives of the Sea Gypsies or the Badjao people. Some viewers commented that Investors should be welcomed asap, but in my opinion, the GOVERNMENT (federal & regional) should take on the initial steps. First & foremost, public funds should be used to improve the area's INFRASTRUCTURES -- esp those that DIRECTLY affect the people's quality of life (pathways and bridgeways, environmental systems). Secondly, collaboration btwn the govt, business sector and the community should be forged under a SLOW Growth mandate. Commercialization and Tourism do not always bring about good Progress, esp when done too soon. People's lives and culture must first be UPLIFTED and evolve. Development, if done hastily, could only bring about displacement & resentment. The locals deserve more. Their COMMON interests must be at the heart of any "Progressive" undertaking.

Ansel, it's embarrassingly sad to see that the river and sea there are with floating debris and garbages. 😢😢😢 Not a proud scene to brag. Sitangkai really is VERY VERY interesting. But they should facilitate easier access. They should build an airport in the main island & build a bridge to the water settlement (which is anchored on a smaller island), much like Venice is anchored to Margera. It has very unique attractions: the incredible water city, an island with white sand, seaweed plantations, etc.
