This weekend a part of the Family from Germany arrived again. So it was time to explore the chateau again, exploring the markets around our region and also making a very special discovery in the chateau outbuildings! We went down to the old farm managers hidden Office. The treasures there are unbelievable! Have a look!

​@jakeg1421 LaLande and most chateaus are closed over the winter period. They operate seasonally. One problem with carpet is it retains heat and summers in Europe can become stifling. Thats the tourist season. High end hotels have air conditioning so the inclusion of carpets is less of a problem. They do show marks and stains. And will Denise allow pets? European accommodation predominately does. Carpets are more care intensive, especially unpatterned. Comments raising concerns over the carpet were shared in good faith. I was one.

Kind of crazy that all those papers, letters, documents were saved for all those years!! But you would have thought they would have taken better care of them, to preserve them for historical sake. They obviously thought they were important enough that they did not discard anything. That would be a monumental task to try and sort through and preserve this amazing history!!

You are doing a great job. How you decorate is no-one's business except your own, Denise. You do not have to justify yourself. It's your home and your time, energies and money, being used, no one elses. As I understand it, you are leaving the more formal rooms downstairs (such as the hall and the dining rooms etc, in thier 'antique ' state, and what you do with your personal rooms and guest rooms, is your decision. And there is no reason why the original antiquity of those areas can not flow into your more modern style, which has many traditional features incorperated anyway.

You are absolutely correct! A mix of modern and antique. When a lot of antique furniture was built people were smaller and lighter. Furniture must accommodate today’s bodies. I would want comfortable chairs and lounges - a big bed with modern bedding, bedside tables large enough to accommodate my “stuff”, a luxury bathroom with a counter for cosmetics - a hair dryer, a makeup mirror - you have a perfect vision for your high end accommodations. Respect!

Because these homes were left vacant or owned by people who didn’t have the means to update, who were doing everything possible just to keep ownership they didn’t change.

Do not allow yourself to be swayed by others when you are creating your vision for your chateau. Your chateau is so large with so many original features and contents and you are honouring this. You are setting up your spa and carpets do make the rooms warmer and comfortable for your guests and in your private rooms. It is a person choice. It is your chateau. Carpets do also protect flooring. There is also no tripping over rugs or splinters for public risk. Do not let comments influence your enjoyment of the creative process. What a treasure trove of documents you have found in the manager's office. It is like a time warp like some of your attic rooms. Enjoy your week and thank you for posting. Those cakes did look really good. I think I would be so tempted and put on weight if I lived there.

That manager's office is amazing, from the walls, to those amazing documents. It looks like some of them would have been the history of the property documents used in proving rights to it, and full provenance (which would have been essential in inheritance, and in possible legal disputes, plenty of old stories where a missing document created all kinds of troubles). That in itself is a treasure. But just the day-to-day activity documents, like the ones showing the bills paid, etc., would be fascinating. I've heard of old properties being sold, and the notaries documents included the history of the property going back hundreds of years, to prove rights have all been properly handled. As far as critiques, I hadn't read any comments so wasn't aware you'd been heavily critiqued before. I'll admit, I did wonder why you were getting carpet since you have what looks to be beautiful floors, I probably wouldn't have worried about the different styles of flooring, that's just a part of its charm and history. That said, if someone is coming for a spa experience, carpet is definitely better. And, I don't imagine you're destroying or even harming the floors by putting carpet down, so it can always be changed later if the purpose changes. Or, you could opt for a sort of hybrid, get the wood finished nicely, and then put down beautiful runners, but that would be for a different purpose. Again, for a spa, it's hard to imagine walking on anything but carpet. At any rate, the building is so beautiful pretty much anything you'd want to do will look its best in there. That market in Angoulême looks fantastic! And, I just love your chateau, it's just so picturesque.

CARPET, while currently out of vogue is the floor covering which protects the wood floors the best. I always say carpeting is disposable. When it is used up, recycle. After all, if you look at preservation, amortization,carpet is a mere blip in time.

This was so interesting. You definitely need to have a conservator come in and advise you on how to preserve the documents and letters. They have been left in poor state. Seeing the shoe boxes was disappointing. The Glass plates with the pictures still on them are how the photographs were taken, I have never seen an original plate with the negative still on it before, Keep them out of the light. Fantastic find. The carpet will protect the original hardwood, reduce the echo & other noises, insulate the floors and be comfortable to walk on. If guests want original, they can visit some other parts of the Castle - you have many original features lol Ignore the nasty comments. I think some people go around leaving nasty remarks on purpose just to upset people. You are all doing wonderfully and I enjoy seeing the decisions you have made for your new home and business. The Chateau has been forgotten.. the way it works and it's purpose. As a Marquis a Chateau was required to accommodate visitors and guests of nobility who were travelling. To provide employment to the community. To run farms to feed the community and engage in trade. The Chateau was a business and needed to make a profit and pay taxes which also brought comforts to the community on a whole. In today's world this is the Mayor who runs a Town or a City and works out of a government building with employees who do park and road works etc. You have taken on a monumental responsibility and task and as long as your Events and Rooms are booked and you are making money - you have done it right!! Any Royal would be comfortable in your Newly Decorated, Carpeted Accommodations!!

Interesting Finding that secret room with so much History and Letters and book work . The Carpet Saga ... at the end of the day if it does not work u can always rip it up and sand those beautiful floors under it , most Chateaus have odds and sods floors but once sanded they give character to any room easy to keep clean too then any carpet will . So i am guess all Guest will be told to take there shoes off at the entry to the hallway ? Before going onto the carpet as having a white sand stone driveway will most definitely end up on the floor being dragged in . Yes Hotels do have carpets but they not Chateaus stately buildings of History unless built with some sort of history behind them . Its a tough one but looking at what other fine chateaus have done carpet seems like a 70s thing that they all rip out .

As much as I love the timber and always rip out carpet myself, you’re entirely right. From my Grannie’s generation and back, people never liked timber boards and thought it was a sign of a household being poor! That stands up from what I read during parts of my history degree too :) Times and styles change of course and while personally I love timber, I can see why you would choose carpet for a luxury day spa and also to be historical accurate in many ways.

Just one thought about decorating a chateau... If I booked a holiday in a french Chateau, as beautiful as yours... Straight out of a fairytale 😊 Then what would I expect, and want? Well, the fantasy! Four poster beds, chandeliers, lush fabrics, antiques, clawfoot bathtubs and a bit of a feeling of the past and history! What I would not want, is modern decor and "ikea" furniture. Minimalistic and sleek, modern things - no thank you! Yes, the bed should be comfortable, and the bathroom working - but why even go to an old Chateau, if the outside and inside do not match? Oh, and about the mix and match floorboards - It is part of the history, and the wooden floors are beautiful, so maybe instead consider area rugs? I do think it is funny, when specific choices get alot of backlash in comments, that it is then just overlooked, justified with differences in taste. Because again, if I book a stay at a Chateau, that looks like a Disney fairytale, then I will be disappointed, if it is decorated in beige and mauve, and the room resembles a doctors waiting room. I think u are right because most of us watching these videos , love Chateaus we love the French look of the old but in a way its done up and we love Antiques . The thing is in France there are 100s of Chateaus u can stay at , Some are in keeping as they were but have been done up with antiques that are in good condition , just look at Chateau Diaries . But we just have to wait and see what Denise does the rooms before were needing a good up date but just watch this space .

I remember another Chateau KZbin channel that made similar choices for their chateau and then said they do not understand why their channel is not growing. After a few outbursts from them to their subscribers they now no longer have a KZbin channel. A lot of the subscribers left. We will watch and wait.

You are not doing restoration you are sympathetically renovating. Carpet is very practical in a huge building to make heating more efficient and just for the comfort of guests. You do you and let those that don’t agree find their own place to “restore”. What a fascinating experience exploring the old managers room, a treasure of history to be discovered. ❤

Could it be the empty shoe boxes were used to bring paperwork to managers office to have all documents in one place before the sale? Whatever the case, the information on the papers and their age is mind-blowing. Looking forward to seeing what you and Brett will do with them. Maybe you can find a grant designated for historical artifacts that could be used to hire someone to sort through it all. Or maybe later on put a notice out for a couple volunteers. What an amazing find in the old managers office. So fun you could do it with your family. You're going to need an archivist to sort through these. Some beautiful old furniture and tapestries too. Other chateaus use rugs..a little more vintage. I like the look of wood floors but not the coldness or noise. I carpeted mine too
