B@d's concern for the people they hire is compassionate, but also smart. If the people you hire always end up dying on the jobs you provide, you will quickly run out of employees as your reputation tanks. On the other hand, if you tell them things like "Be careful, I don't want your death on my conscience," if they survive the job they will tell others that you don't sacrifice hirees on a whim and people will be more willing to work for you.

Edgerunners was in production in tandem with Cyberpunk 2077, so its actually fairly plausible that Lucy could have been involved; CDPR has said a few times that they handed Trigger pre-production maps and locales so they could build out the backgrounds of the series.

@@KonkaBass It's 100% possible that B@d actually came AFTER Lucy was created for the anime. Looking at it timeline wise. Edgerunners was announced officially in JUNE, and the game released that DECEMBER. So that's about 6 MONTHS where Lucy would be a finished character and the entire plotline of the show would be more or less done. The outline at the very least is finished and the devs would know what happens. 6 months, and what presence does B@d have in the game? A couple lines of text in a few places, which takes about 5 minutes to do. And one single mission with some text, and Regina doing a couple voice lines for the holo call. Yeah they could DEFINITELY have added that stuff in. Even if you assume they decided on it last minute, the hardest thing they'd have to do would be call up Alana Maria and ask her to record less than a paragraph of dialogue. Not exactly a labor intensive task. That's not to say Lucy IS B@d, we don't know who B@d is, but she's much higher up on the list.

16:50 in the Bartmoss guide to the net source book, there is a program listed on either page 92 or 93 called "ESC". ESC, or Emergency Self-Construct, is supposed to be an altered version of Soulkiller, modified by Bartmoss to digitize the Netrunners psyche and put it into the net, as opposed to putting it into an engram and trapped. Its also 2 jokes in one, making the ESC abbreviation on the keyboard but also the changing the classic "Emergency Self Destruct" sequences in various works of scifi. Its highly theorized that Bartmoss tied ESC to his deadmans switch that also released RABIDs into the net. RABIDs destroying the net and all ICE wouldve allowed him unfettered access to the Net, and the RABIDs were described as taking the image as Bartmoss in the net, which wouldve acted as decoys for him to escape into the deeper parts of the net. All this being said, I think he's very much alive but I do not think he's B@D. The only other NetRunner I can think of that has this level of skill, is Spider Murphy. However, her Net alias is Black Widow, and shes not once seen in 2077 implying she may not be in NC or may be dead (last she was heard from was '25). Personally, I think B@D is likely a Ghost within the net. Yes, the Bunker is kinda damning to that concept but think about this: They couldnt do any of the "real" world work themselves. They're never seen, and always a step ahead. 2 different locations acted as smoke screens for them, to throw off their enemies. And their bunker doesnt seem to have a NetRunning chair/booth. They targetted Arasaka, Maelstrom, Wraithes, and Tyger claws. The gangs were just collateral I feel like, I think the real target was likely Arasaka the whole time. Makes sense as its the most powerful corp in NC, and it owns Soulkiller, and Mikoshi. A hub of other Ghosts. Honestly, her goals might align more with Alt than any other NetRunner

There are theories- backed up by a story from the TTRPG- that Alt Cunningham survived. Johnnies memories of those events are for sure questionable at best outside of the broadest strokes, there's a chance Alt wasn't truly ripped from her body, but copied, and then managed to escape sometime later while the copy was doing scary AI ghost things. If she wasn't interested in, or had trouble discreetly accessing, cosmetic surgery, entering the city could be quite dangerous for her. Going after Arasaka would 100% be on her todo list, some of the other actions attributed to B@d could have been diversionary attacks or side jobs she took to pay the bills or take other threats off the table(like setting Maelstrom and the Wraiths against each other to limit the danger to non assholes)
@justicebrown1077

IN CP RED, its talked about how during the arasaka heist, Smasher showed up and Spider Murphy felt like the threat he posed to the team was too great. if they died, Alt would be trapped in their mainframe. So Murph fractured Alts engram and scattered it across the net with the goal of recollecting her data and putting her back together one day. This would be why ALT in game looks vaguely like her, but not to the point of how Johnny looks like Johnny. What we know as Alt is an AI that uses her engram fragment, which it confirms itself. In CP RED theres a story (spoilers) that takes place in '45 in which we see a NetRunner who is in love with Johnny, named Angel. She even bares Alt's likeness. Personally, I think Murph was successful getting *most* of Alt back but there was one piece out of reach: Her ego. This could explain why Angel goes by a different name, but is also a lot more affectionate towards Johnny (she tracks down his preserved body in the hopes of saving him one day). ALT (AI ALT) wants to consume the ghosts of Mikoshi likely to gain more information, and processing speed to allow her be more effective, and will likely want to destroy the blackwall. We also know that *this* Alt is also setting up a place called Ghost World, a sort of Necropolis for Ghosts based out in Hong Kong. She either wants her own nation, to destroy (or "evolve") humanity, or both

I noticed that Spider Murphy wasn't in your list. In the game she is shown getting on the ship just before Smasher kills Johnny and she is the one that kills Kei Arasaka the next day. Rogue is older than Spider and is still alive and very much kicking and since not much else in-game is said about her, Spider could very well be alive. She is also known for attacking Arasaka aside from working with Johnny and history with Militech. As far as Watcher, he's a fellow runner so it would make sense that she would care for him as maybe she sees potential in him and being 82 at this point might also explain the not being able to do it herself part. The shard in the bunker also references Mario Bros and a 2002 movie. Those are pop culture references most likely to not even be known to anyone who isn't as old as Spider would be. If she is still going after Arasaka then switching to the b@d moniker would make sense to not tip them off who is really coming after them. After all, Spider Murphy would be too well known where as someone named "b@d" wouldn't.

I tend to agree with the final theory as making everything tie into legacy characters just feels a bit boring. Night City is full of people trying to make as big a name for themselves as edgerunners as they can before their luck runs out. B@D is probably one who has survived long enough to earn a reputation by keeping their distance from people they work with and maintaining anonymity. That was pretty much how the netrunner player in my old CP2020 tabletop group worked - his PC never met the rest of the party in meatspace, though in-universe that was easier to accomplish as it was prior to Bartmoss breaking the Net.

We can scan people with our optics and see who they are & what they're wanted for; if Arasaka knows who b@d is, they might not be able to move around NC without getting jumped. And to the point of, the game and b@d came first, we never get to see b@d and the show writers could have written Lucy to fit into some of those traits that b@d has in the game. When it comes to your Lucy theory… granted the real life timeline of the game releasing before the Edgerunners Anime does technically put a spanner in the works… Edgerunner’s is still technically a prequel to the main game. So theoretically, CDPR and maybe even Mike could slightly retcon the identity of B@D to be Lucy. And maybe the reason B@D required others to hack things for them in the city & badlands is because they’re not on Earth to do it themselves. Maybe B@D is based on the moon… just like where Lucy was last seen. And Lucy definitely has reasons to be attempting to hack Arasaka… not only for perhaps revenge for how they treated her & her peers back in the day… but especially because they technically took everything from her… her friends and especially her lover, David. But also, like you said… she could be trying to free David’s engram from Mikoshi and the situation with the Wraiths and stuff could indeed be a decoy to make Arasaka and others believe they’re being hacked by someone in Night City or the Badlands, when really they’re hacking from the moon, and the net runners she employed could be just to maybe help with signal between the Earth and the Moon. Also, B@D’s compassion for that other hacker seems to somewhat fit Lucy’s personality and her experience of losing people she’s worked with. But indeed, B@D could be someone or something completely different. and yes.. I did say “something”, as in B@D might not even be human, they could be a rogue AI.

I could be very wrong when I type this, but what is B@D is a Rogue AI in the same fashion of the Delmain AI's. That could explain why the different tones in the communications, also why B@D could not physically access certain areas. If B@D is one of the Rogue AI's then it might not have anything to do with the heist at all, but the Mr. Blue Eyes ending of the game as He is almost certainly an AI and he says he his people or proxies, I forget which, had been running into Arasaka and gathering as much information and resources as they could while the Corp was heavily damaged. B@D could have been one of those people or proxies and was trying to get into Arasaka even before the Heist. It also shows that T-Bug was either a traitor from the start or a really bad net runner. The only problem I have is the sandwich in the bunker, but B@D could have used a Doll as you suggested as it would be the only way to do that, or maybe it was someone that B@D let squat there and told to leave when the Wraiths began their approach maybe?

It’d be hard to tell who bad is but Rejina made contact with him and is commonly referred to as a he. I’m just assuming but being a skilled netrunner and setting up bunkers, he’d have to be in his late 30s to mid 40s. He obviously has a body if the Wraiths were searching for him, having a bunker and setting up mines and drones. My guess is he, or she, can’t enter Night City because they’re wanted and could be also wanted by Arasaka. Thing about skilled netrunners is they live in the shadows. Getting caught could mean the end of them. IE, Alt Cunningham would be the perfect example of a skilled netrunner getting caught. Bugbear, even Brigid (Though Brigid got caught due to V’s assistance. Netwatch was the main reason). Thats all I can deduce from what was given.

If it were Lucy, it explains why she can’t do things in person. Also, as far as the work with the wraiths, the motive could always be ulterior on B@d’s part, regardless of their identity. So just some observations of my own. In B@D's bunker theres a weapon rack with a rifle (it was an ashura for me not sure if it changes) and an empty weapon case. The weapon case is interesting because the gun that was inside doesnt match the silhouette of any available to us in game. It also had 2 slots for different barrels. Whatever was in it was heavily customized. B@D isnt just a netrunner theyre a full on fighter. Maybe even a techie. Also unsure if it matters but the computer screens have an article pulled up about "meatman" which is a serial killer operating in night city and could possibly be the one we hunt with River. Now i can go full detective and point out one of the wraiths was shot from the door of the bunker twice at least. Once in the heart and once in the gut.

B@D is a physical person. B@D is a woman. (My guess is the "Princess is in another castle" message is the only thing we'll get on that. B@D operates mainly from and lives in the badlands. There's a few points for this. The first being the hidden bunker that was lived in, but also that it exists and she was there. Finding a place like that isn't really random chance. You either BUILD it, which implies an excess of time there, or you hack a few servers and find that it exists, which implies intentional searching. B@D's programs are always run from insertion of a shard. The only time it isn't, is when she contacts "Watcher". Finally, we get to the interesting part. Why B@D can't jack into the tower directly. And she's OPEN about that information. There could be a few reasons. B@D is physically disabled, though not likely given her base had stairs. B@D is recognizable enough that the NCPD actively track her image, which could be solved by a few choice hacks and she doesn't target NCPD. But my favorite theory is that she doesn't HAVE a jack. Unlike 99% of the people in Night City, I think B@D doesn't actually have any augmentations. I don't think she's a netrunner at all. I think she's just a supremely good coder. Maybe due to a bad experience or a bad brain stem or a bad nervous system (which is honestly what I think the name would come from in this theory, a way to reclaim her "disability" as something that is uniquely her), she's unable to get the cyberware. My main guess is that she's a nomad who never got the augments from a birth defect that wouldn't have affected her in the current day. While living as a nomad, she was able to piece together computers. She was eventually kicked out of the larger groups and had to live as a wraith. While there, she utilized her hacking and programming skills to make up for her lack of reaction time. Then got jobs to pay for food drops. Without being able to get a jack installed, she can't get employed legitimately in NC, as everyone uses cyberware to send money, messages, work, everything. I still can't quite tell what her big plan might be for Arasaka and those subnets, but I do hope that Phantom Liberty might explain more about her.

Personally speaking, I have a feeling B@D's reason for getting Watcher to climb the tower is purely because they can't be in two places at once. Think about it like this. Let's say you have infiltrated a site, B@d is clearly someone that puts a premium on anonymity which might suggest they got into a spot of trouble and needed a distraction of some sort to cover their activities, past or present, without being able to physically go there for the sake of breaking her cover. It sounds like, much like in the Corpo lifestyle choice where you work for Arasaka counter-intel and you advise on the Biotechnica plant inside, that they could have been a corporate spy amidst Arasaka's ranks. But like all spies they need people on the outside to help them with their activities (ditto in Corpo lifestyle, your initial relationship with Jackie Welles). This would also explain why there is a familiar tune between them, and why they could so easily 'send someone else' ... So they have likely spent years cultivating a cell of outsiders to do the stuff they suddenly can't do given their corporate cover. Maybe B@d helped out Watcher, and continues to help him out, which instead of being merely fawning admiration for a net celebrity netrunner, is actually merely a case of having dedicated off-site hackers on their side that *legitimately* feel like they owe them. B@d is a great netrunner, and they might respect them simply for that, but I have a feeling that given she can so easily get others to do something if Watcher isn't up to task--Suggests being personally acquainted and that Watcher is genuinely thankful to be called on to return some great favour. This is further cemented, in my opinion, by Watcher specifically using 'Choom' ... suggesting long term familiarity. And with B@d asking whether he was 'in Kabuki' ... suggests B@d has a whole cell of operators distributed through the city, and Watcher is one of their recruits. Watcher simply being ecstatic that B@d is finally calling up his number to help them on a job. This might be his ticket. A chance to repay someone that might have lent him eddies or something, or finally getting his chance to do some solid gig-work with B@d. 'Watcher never jacks out, you know that!' ... So B@d has obviously recruited them and seen them operate, but this might be a chance at the 'big times'... given just how many jobs and plot lines surround B@d she might be an up and coming netrunner fixer. It also explains why she legitimately doesn't want him to cark it--Also why he's so enthusiastic. I mean imagine being a gutterpunk netrunner in a corporate dystopia, who has landed gigwork with B@d? Wouldn't you be enthusiastic about the opportunity? Maybe so enthusiastic you want to prove your skills, and possibly bite off more than you can chew? Just because it's a corporate, dystopian cyberpunk setting, doesn't mean people are lacking their own Jackie Welles out there, after all. It would also explain why they're gettng the gangs to fight off against one another, as well as having dirt on things like corporate logistics and how to down drones. I think you're operating on a 'good/bad' paradigm where you assume doing right by a fellow netrunner represents 'altruism' or the like. I personally feel that they're simply a mercenary and/or corporate spy, with their own affiliations and friends that have nothing to do with an arbitrary morality split. They have allies, friends, and workmates... like you do in Arasaka Counter-Intel and being a liaison for 'Saka work with Jackie Welles both before and after the prologue. I feel like B@d is just that, personally.

While I agree that Lucy, most likely, isn't B@D, your reasoning isn't as sound as you think. Invert your reasoning. CDPR had input on the Edgerunners anime. So they could have had Trigger Studio link in things to make us think B@D is Lucy. Her staying on the moon could easily be used as an inference to the princess being in another castle.

Love this video. Exploring the theory of Lucy being b@d, David's memorial (At Columbarium) and message seems to indicate she came back and left the message 'You didn't take me to the moon, but you were there with me' (There is also messages for each of the crew, and David's mother right under). So I'm pretty sure that's in reference to how the show portrayed her trip, and that she came back. As to the possibility of because time mismatch, Anime isn't one and done in a year and while the production timeline of Edgerunners is unknown, a similar show with roughly the same runtime by other studio's (worse quality but whatever) takes roughly 3-6 years for a full production. So it's possible they chose the name b@d because character names hadn't been finalized. CDPR is also no strangers to long term planning and ARGs to tease future projects, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being Lucy entirely. Hopefully we get the answers soon.

Actually Edgerunners were supposed to be out before the game, but they were postponed. So using the actual accessibilty of the series to the public as an argument isn't that significant. And it makes sense that she has a fanboy(s) since David's crew story wouldn't go unnoticed to fellow Night City residents (Netrunners espacially). My take is B@d is either Lucy or Spider Murphy

*spoilers for edgerunners* The ending credits of Edgerunners give us a stylized PoV shot from Lucy. It shows her stumbling in a daze through an alley, presumably just after escaping with Falco, and it depicts her vision glitching multiple times. We then get a couple scenes seeming to indicate an indeterminate amount of time passing as she grieves, one of which is of her on her bed as a rocket takes off outside her window. Then we get a couple more scenes of her sprinting through an increasingly surrealistic, minimalist landscape before looking up at the moon again, and again the visual glitches. In the series itself we see her suffering from spasms in her hand. It only happens, I believe, twice and even though it is called attention too prominently in the animation it never actually gets discussed or plays any part in the narrative. And Mane’s final descent is a vast, minimalist roadway he’s running down. I’ve always felt there is a chance the show was quietly suggesting that Lucy never left Nightcity. She either went or is spiraling toward cyberpsychosis in the wake of David’s death and the moon scenes are just her dellusion as she’s actually just still sitting in that apartment, running her lunar date BD on loop. Trapped in a cage of light. No one ever really escapes Nightcity in the end.

It's entirely possible that Lucy is B@d. Here's why. First of all, to debunk the idea that CDProjekt Red weren't expecting Edgerunners and wouldn't have planted B@d in the game to be a reference to a character they didn't know would exist. Edgerunners was announced on a Night City Wire livestream on June 25, 2020. When did Cyberpunk 2077 release? 10 December 2020. Keep in mind, this is when it was ANNOUNCED. So CD would have been talking to Studio Trigger about it WAAAAY before this point, which is around six MONTHS from release of the game on its own. So there was plenty of time for them to put in some references to B@d. It's pretty simple when this just means putting in some text files, and even B@d's one direct mission could just be added in. There's nothing in the game that would be difficult to slot in even months before release, so citing the anime coming out after the game means nothing. They could absolutely have planned for this, the anime WAS supervised directly by CDProjekt Red after all. Right, so one thing that's very clear regarding B@d is she obviously doesn't like Arasaka. Super rare, right? But seriously, the fact everyone hates Arasaka means B@d being more open about it is kinda substantial. She seems to have specific beef with them, and again sure, loads of people do, but here's the thing. Lucy is an extremely skilled Netrunner, who was literally raised BY ARASAKA to explore the net and eventually get flatlined by AI. So that alone would be enough, but after escaping she then finds David, watches him get destroyed by Night City and then watches Arasaka personally deliver the finishing blow to both David's sanity and, you know, literally. Oh and she watches all her other friends get killed too, that probably helped. Lucy then escapes Night City and goes to the moon, where Arasaka can't get her. In Phantom Liberty, spoilers but we're kinda beyond the pale by this point, Songbird's primary goal is to escape to the moon, and long story short it's made pretty clear once she gets there, nobody can touch her. Not even the government. The moon isn't empty either, there's people living up there, so it's not like if you stay on the moon when the rocket leaves you just starve to death. Given how good a runner she is, Lucy would certainly be able to find work, plus she has zero reason to come back to Earth, every reason she had got shot in the face. (Yes some people have pointed out there's a message supposedly from Lucy and clearly ABOUT Lucy at the columbarium, but the thing about that is, it's not evidence Lucy came back. Falco could've easily done that for her at any time. Falco even has David's jacket and gives it to V.) In the Devil ending V is on a space station orbiting Earth, and when given permission, V can make calls on the Holo to people on Earth. So with the proper equipment it's entirely possible to interact with Earth, at least via the NET, from space. This means Lucy DOESN'T need to be on Earth to be a Netrunner. She could operate from the moon if she has the equipment necessary. We know Lucy is highly acrobatic and damn good in a fight, monowire aint nobody's fool. We know as well that Lucy is very sneaky, she hid IN NIGHT CITY from Arasaka for YEARS. She displays worry over Watcher and calls him "Kid". She wouldn't use Watcher at all, but she cannot do this job herself, just like she couldn't get into Megabuilding H11 herself, instead hiring V through Regina. Being on the moon would certainly stop Lucy from doing ANY physical aspects of gigs. The bunker can be effortlessly explained with one simple concept. Lucy could rent that bunker out to whoever she wants at any time. She could make it a diversion, because if someone finds out she's active and where she is, even if that place is on the moon, she might become substantially less safe. A message being left in a bunker does not mean Lucy was there or there recently. Princess Peach was always in the last castle, going by the reference. That line just means the people looking for her looked in the wrong place, she was never there, it's the wrong castle. B@d is a very dangerous Netrunner, which fits Lucy. B@d has specific beef with Arasaka, also fits Lucy. B@d cannot travel around Night City, and is never physically seen anywhere, fits Lucy. We never learn if Lucy has a handle, every Runner we meet in the game does have one. Now you could argue that Lucy wouldn't work with the Wraiths, but would V work with Maelstrom? Well, yes, V canonically does. Might turn on them, but still buys from them. One of the first missions is to buy a bot from Maelstrom. Yes you can pop Royce and just take the thing, but you can also just pay for it and even fight Militech alongside Maelstrom. But that's beside the point, the job is to pick up a bot from Maelstrom, it's Maelstrom that pulls weapons on V and Jackie first and unless you choose to do what they want and pay up (and don't spike their system with the virus) they don't leave you a choice but to fight them. We don't know why B@d worked with the Wraiths, but there could be any number of reasons. She seemed to arrange for the Wraiths and Maelstrom to meet and butt heads, whether this was so they'd kill each other or to gain their trust or to pull attention to something else she was doing to them? We don't know. She provided an anti-drone virus, but even in the gig that's not some super dangerous thing going on, it's basically just annoying to the badlanders. I mean V does more damaging crimes than mucking with some smuggling routes on a daily basis. Lucy IS still a career criminal, come on, she doesn't do exclusively altruistic things. In the end the Wraiths decide they don't need her and track her to a bunker where they plan to flatline her. B@d is ahead of them and it turns out to be a decoy, and the attempt gets yet more Wraiths killed. Again, we don't know what B@d wanted with the Wraiths, but it was highly likely she was using them just as they used her. That's just business as usual in Night City. So hopefully I've explained well enough why it IS possible that B@d is Lucy Kushinada, operating from a base on the moon. Of course though, we just don't know who B@d truly is. Lucy is just far more likely than this video claims. I mean come on, you really think Lucy would watch Arasaka go out of their way to kill the rest of her crew and then David after all she'd done to protect him and just go "Well I'm on the moon now, bygones and all that." For reference, a 1 way ticket to the moon, according to Lucy herself in Edgerunners, is 250 grand. Assuming she and Falco split the money that let her get that ticket evenly, Lucy would still have a MILLION eddies left over. COULD she retire on that? Sure. WOULD she though? Naaaaaah. She got her dream fulfilled, but unless you believe Lucy took her helmet off just after that last scene cut, she'd have a looooooooooot of time on her hands. Fulfilling a dream doesn't mean life just stops and all suffering is forgiven. Arasaka fucked her childhood, and then they killed her new family too. Cyberpunk isn't a series known for fairy tale endings.

So much detail here, I love this and the last line is chilling and true: Night City has no fairy tale endings. 😔

@@mistressofdreams6031 Thank you. And something else I realized, as I've been playing a ton of Cyberpunk after 2.1 and phantom liberty. Just saying "Blank wouldn't work with blank" really doesn't mean shit. PANAM works with a Raffen. He betrays her, but that's the thing, she worked with him LONG ENOUGH for him to klep her CAR. A NOMAD'S CAR! That means she legit WORKED with him. Rogue set them up to work together, but Panam COULD have just backed out. She didn't. Depending on how you play, V can work with or in some way help pretty much every group in Night City, even SCAVS, maybe. You do a gig for a russian using the scav holo mask trying to appease the tyger claws. Go to Jackie's offrenda and you can literally have drinks with some Valentinos. Come back a bit later and you can literally beat the crap out of some more Valentinos in the same bar! You also do jobs for anonymous people sometimes, hell the Nomad opening is V transporting an iguana, and neither V or Jackie know who it's going to, and they don't find out until opening the thing that it was stolen from Arasaka to start with. The bottom line in Night City is, you work with whoever has what you need. Besides, the idea Lucy would NEVER take work from some random Nomads she doesn't care about because they're assholes to people she doesn't care about is, just kinda stupid. Like HOW many people did Lucy murder without a second thought to try and hide David again? You think she WOULDN'T have done worse shit? Wraiths were paying, she gave them a virus, they tried to stab her in the back, they got shot in the face. In Night City, that's called the weekend.

Whole lot of quests has been redone, and I think I saw something bad in dogtown. There's no way for me to search the messages, but bad's bunker was first to me. I've missed it now three times.

Real world aside... I mean we are in the net. Lucy could operate from the moon

the bad opperates kinda reminded me of bartmoss. meaning, i think bad doesn't do things in person, because their physical self is their weakpoint so to say.

Perhaps bad has some sort of disability or sickness, trying to hack into Arasaka maybe for relic purposes, the maelstrom med warehouse maybe meaning to wipe it out and swoop in to get the spoils. Would explain how they can’t do gigs in person
