Years ago when I had first read this document, the Indian man was not killed. (I believe this may be an indication of a reality shift some time in the past). This is all I recall. The Indian man was a survivor of the plane crash that discovered SCP-354. Despite years of being missing, the individual exhibited no health defects, anomalous properties, or memory of his time in contact with the red pool. It is almost as if he was preserved within it until it eventually let him back out.

I can say with some amount of certainty, that the wall that the exploration team went trough in the other side of the pool, was part of a containment procedure. The wall was surrounding the pool, and the geologist crossed another line of defence and got himself injured by anyone who built that wall. There is a little idea, that maybe, when the team crossed the pool, they came back to our reality's surface, but their perception of reality was altered, while the foundation's perception of the team was altered as well, perceiving them as monsters that came out of the pool. This scp is really fascinating.

I’ve only got one problem with this SCP. It has waaay too many “Data Corrupted” segments in it. A terrifying roar and a man bleeding to death is fine, maybe add an odd sighting of something, but it’s fine, however, something “crossing” without any previous implications, an unexplained time limit, and 4 weeks of information missing comes off as lazy writing. The beginning of the expedition starts off great. A four day travel to the dimension, good, a 40+ hour day/night cycle, good, moss that shrivels in the sun and grows a lot at night and, due to this, the expedition team would rather not step foot in it, good, a man disappearing without a trace, good, a tree seemingly shifting in its place, good, and the 8 layers of walls, good, but after that it goes downhill. I like not having everything told to me and I could make the assumption that the roar is that pissed off creature that may head through the pool one day and that the wall was to keep the pool in, that the time limit may be related to the time between creature appearances, the “crossing has something to do with the creatures, but I shouldn’t have to piece more than 4 weeks of information together from an expedition that, by my count, takes place over 6-8 weeks total, especially if those four weeks are the fuel for the plot. Just feels like they wrote themselves into a hole and couldn’t think of anything unique enough to round the story out
@jannx7663
@jannx7663 5 жыл бұрын
Actually the guy who wrote the thing said that the original plan was that the roar actually was something trying to warn the guys from the danger, but he never wrote that or a solid definition of the monsters because of how hard it is to write something original

I'm on the fence about it- I think they just erred on the side of too little rather than over explain and ruin the ambience. I think barring the ever-elusive "just right" amount of explanation that too little is always better. Leaving the door open for further tales is a great compromise. I think they definitely could have given more answers without crossing the line but I think they were not far off from striking the perfect balance. The tale itself is already providing so much compared to the original entry that I find it satisfying. I want to know more but that's part of the fun isn't it? Personally I like the explanation that the pool itself was ultimately the source of the log. It goes well with the idea that it is sentient - already hinted at in the entry. It makes the missing parts seem much more purposeful. Also it has a sinister intent to make it seem as though it's just a portal to somewhere awful and not an entity from somewhere awful. As if it is saying oh don't mind me...I am a thing, a door, a pool - nobody's home. Just a house without an occupant.

Maybe the pool is a portal to random dimensions, and they somehow new when it would no longer connect to theirs? Hence they needed to get back in time, but maybe they didn’t make it and ended up in our dimension or something. But yeah, this SCP is fantastic all the way up until the end. The end is just so shit...

My theory: The other world is itself alive, the pools of condensed CO2 are its exhalations, though excreted like sweat rather than breathed out from lungs. I believe it is asleep, though the presence of humans is potentially waking it up. The landscape seeming to move (the distance in being greater than the distance back) corroborates this theory. As for the metal walls, I suspect these are actually massive manacles holding the organism in place, and the humans cutting through them is in effect releasing the organism from captivity. The event they have limited time to escape is the creature waking up, at which point who knows what may happen to the explorers. As for "crossing over", I have no idea. Perhaps there is an element of telepathy the sleeping creature can direct at the explorers, or some form of mind control. Some form of psychic ability makes sense, since no one on Earth can remember sending in an exploration team. Your guess is as good as mine.

I love the narrative structure of stories like this. The old pulp science fiction short stories often had dramatic open ended finales. H. P. Agreed, I think that has to do with Density. A lot happens in the course of this story. If done wrong. “Redactions, [DATA EXPUNGED]'s, and similar censorship can be used to add mystery or remove extraneous data. You should know what information you are expunging. *Don't expunge something so you don't need to write it;* hide key information to draw the reader in deeper. Make them wonder what's behind the hidden information. Also: don't redact anything in containment procedures. If the procedures are redacted, how can personnel know how to contain the item? If you want to know more about effective expungement, there's an excellent guide out there for you.” www.scp-wiki.net/how-to-write-an-scp Here is also tells you in the QA page how to use it properly and not lazily. Under the question: Q: Wait, what's the difference between [REDACTED] and [DATA EXPUNGED]? And what are these black boxes, anyway? I should tell the page is in a conversation format. www.scp-wiki.net/zen-and-the-art-of-data-expunged

I have two questions that could probably be considered the same, but I'm mentioning both for discussion. 1: could this pool and other dimension be where all SCPs come from? And 2: could this, somehow be where all life comes from? Anyways, I would love for more stories of this SCP being made. This seems really cool. I'm sure there are other SCPs that are portals to other dimensions, but I don't know why, this one seems cool. And to whoever down below that came up with the idea of a DnD campaign being made of this, just a solid yes: this would be an awesome campaign to play around in.

My Take on the Exploration Log: During the first site's crisis and abandonment the Personnel were mind Controlled by something that got out of the pool or the pool itself into writing the exploration logs to hinder further exploration that could be hurting the pool itself. Its more Logical that the pool itself controlled them as it showed abilities of mind control during the attempt to dry it.

Put me in the frustrated category. It seems that too many who try to ape Lovecraft's style think that it boils down to "just throw a bunch of random weird scary stuff at them." You don't need to have a plot or make what is happening work as a cohesive thematic whole. After all, Lovecraft said that the unexplained is scarier. Therefore, no effort should be made to make anything make sense. If someone accuses you of just throwing a bunch of random shit against the wall, just say their puny human mind can't understand the horror of it all.

I think the main point of frustration is that there is no clear cut answer given in the story and all we are left with a questions without even any hints. Lovecraftian horror doesn't do that, it leaves enough hints behind to make what you discover horrifying and bleak. And that's what this specific story lacks.
@kyoken8691

Sorry but your theory makes no sense. You certainly can enjoy someones work without buying into their ideology. Orson scott card for example. A terrible guy but i still enjoyed his work. Your also missing the fact that not everyone interprets the same. Unless someones work is overly and obvious trying to incite hatred and violence; its free speech. Just because its offensive to many people doesnt give you the right to silence it. Fuck off with that shit. And before someone parrots the freedom from consequences thing.. yes it does thats the whole point. Im prolly wasting my time talking to a wall here since your mind is already made up and fuck what some random youtube commentor said.
