I disagree with his assessment a bit. He says that because the entity causes people to feel pain, it also causes other bad effects, which leads to him concluding the entity is malicious. But from what we see of the foundation post-"cure", they seem to lack general care or emotion, so I don't feel its a leap in logic to say the entity causes this (as in positive emotion) as well. So I don't think the final "the foundation losing is the bad ending" is really justified. I know this isn't the best place to post this, but I just wanted to throw my hat into the ring.

Great video! I read the declass and it was fantastic, I honestly don't think I could've deduced as much as he did if you gave me a whole week. Lol I think I prefer an idea brought up in the replies to the declass that "IT" may be empathy itself because in my opinion the declass doesn't adequately explain why O5-1 and SCP-682 find "IT" disgusting, specifically disgusting. One theory I've heard is that pain, the ability of humans to feel bad because bad things are happening, is the result of an anomalous entity burrowing its way into the minds of all humans. The Foundation was horrified by it, and developed a means to cure themselves from its influence (which only affected Dr. Bright's current vessel, not Dr. Bright himself) before trying to eliminate it by eliminating all infected by it. The voice from the radio is how the thing talks, and the stretched-out person was a physical manifestation of it.

Picture this: The "IT" they discovered in the psychospace is some sort of (anti?)memetic parasite with very obviously evil intentions (maybe causing negative effects over multiple parallel universes if left unchecked). Human empathy is one of the mechanisms this being uses to protect itself. What the foundation did here was just an efficient way of containing this being after they "cured" themselves of the parasite, thus also eradicating their empathy.

@@johncarl5505 Not really, it implies a lot about the human soul and the human unconscious that is very thought-provoking and is written in a very unique and mysterious way that builds on itself and alludes throughout the story to the ending. It implies something that on its own is so revolting to anyone who is exposed to the unequivocal truth all simultaneously agree that it would be better off killing all living human beings than to allow that intrinsic part of what makes up humanity to carry on. Pain, suffering, agony, despair, sadism, vanity, morality, faith. This is part of the human soul, and from a purely objective point of view, which the Foundation was able to achieve by ridding themselves of their own souls, is "disgusting" and deserves to be destroyed. And that's just talking about the meaning of the story, the world building and settings is awesome and sets a very dystopian and increasing hopeless feeling.

You know, sometimes I have to take a break after watching these videos. Some of the stories in the SCP database are so beautifully painful, and so deeply meaning, that it leaves me shell-shocked. Pietro's journey throughout this entire story, and the underlying tone of loss/keeping of humanity, is... I don't have a word for how heartwrenching, but also uplifting it is. What the SCP Foundation 'found' *was* Humanity. Every shared moral, emotion, drive, and will to live that we have. In my opinion, the SCP Foundation truly found God - or whatever equivalent thing it was - as we are 'made in his image', a fact referenced by the chastisement of the O5 Council member when he said 'God help us'. They discovered what makes us human, and in following with their own doctrine of contain or destroy what is unknown, opted to destroy it. They assumed that what they found was dangerous, and that we needed to be freed from it. In direct opposition to this, we have Pietro, who while he has lost his personal humanity, is the absolute embodiment of it. He proceeds, at first, in order to try and help where he can, an underlying point of humanity, and having a soul. He continues on despite all the horrors he's seen, and all the damage he's taken, because that's the human thing to do. He tries to save the timeline, and reset it, because his humanity demands that he do so. His still having of his humanity, despite being desensitized to everything, was made obvious when he chose to not follow Doctor Bright to the hole of parallel dimensions, and instead carry on. Now, obviously I'm not saying its a *good* or *desirable* thing, but its function to me outweighs its negatives. Let me explain. So there is a prevailing theme throughout stories in cultures throughout the world of Order against Chaos, Harmony against Disharmony, and Bliss against Suffering. Often times, the former parts are framed as the 'good' attributes, and the latter as the 'bad' attributes. It's VERY common in western cultures especially - the framing, I mean. Hence, why a lot of modern media and framing continues this narrative. It's not necessarily wrong, either, mind you. Anarchy is good for no one, suffering is painful, disharmony can lead to conflict which in turn can lead to the former two. However, another underlying theme amongst many cultures, most notably more Eastern style cultures such as the Japanese or Chinese. And that is the concept of balance. One cannot know peace of mind until he has recognized how chaotic his thoughts are, for instance. This doesn't mean that a chaotic mind is *bad*, however. In fact, in order to understand what a peaceful mind is, a chaotic mind is *required*, as without it you wouldn't have the perspective to understand what a peaceful mind is. Likewise, you need suffering to understand what bliss is, and vice versa, as without it, it would all just be the same, and you'd never know the difference. On top of this, consider motivation. At the basest level, we can assume that most of what we do is done from a desire to come out of any given situation better. You cook your food with spices and vegetables so that it tastes better, for instance. Why? Because its preferable to eating unseasoned food. Why does that matter to you? Because you are coming from a place where you are not as happy, or not as well off, and while unseasoned food would sate your hunger, it wouldn't leave you feeling *better*. If you take away the contrast between the negative aspects of being human, then you aren't left with the good aspects of being human. You're actually left with nothing, as even your basest motivations for doing something are gone. Another example is football. Why would you ever play such a taxing, straining, painful sport? Because when you finally score, it feels earned, because you put up with all that pain and suffering to become better and make that goal. Without the difficulty, without the suffering, of all those hours practicing, working out, and playing the game, your victory is less beautiful, less rewarding. All this to say that I think even if the thing the SCP Foundation found in humans causes pain and suffering and hardship, it's worth keeping around. Life would have little to no meaning if things didn't suck sometimes, as when something good happened, we'd never know, or take it for granted. And if a Psonic Parasite from another Dimension imbedded in all of humanity is responsible for giving life meaning, then I think its worth keeping around, even if its a bit creepy.

Someone may have said this somewhere ( I'm not really sure). But just in case it hasn't, I'll say it now. While I was looking at Scp 5000 in the wiki, I noticed that each table of anomalies that the Foundation have been using against humanity that Pietro was keeping track of were all grouped together in the series they were introduced in. In the first table that Pietro comprises, he only includes series 1 Scps. In the second table, Only series 2 Scps were included. This ended with series 5 being in the last table of course.

This made me think about 2935, the dead world because of one question I asked myself while listening besides "why?": What would be more terrifying: Being alone in a dead world or being a spectator in a world that is in the process of dying? This one got me good in terms of story and the fact that it referenced other SCPs was nice. Watching the end of the world unfold before one's own eyes has been described in so many different stories in so many different ways but it will never cease to get me thinking. In a NOOTshell: the Foundation finds out that having a "soul", a "conscience", is something imposed on us by some otherworldly being, and they seemingly find out what happens if there are souls around, and decide to end humanity to stop whatever plans IT has for all these souls. And thanks to a lost boy in a suit, the end of humanity doesn't happen. This is the bad ending of the story. The good ending would be humanity being erased.

Long post: Interesting concept. It implys a a few things IMO. 1. The “human spark”, spirit or soul is some sort of memetic entity, either symbiotic or parasitic but regardless, not natural to humanity and powerful enough to cause a collective shift in behavior to the point it would be considered the normal behavior pattern. 2. This entity seems to be able to use humanity as it’s eyes, ears (as demonstrated by the 05 meeting comments we are apparently referring to God, “was it speaking”) and apparently can influence behavior, but not to the point of taking over entirely or permanently as obviously, it didn’t prevent anyone from viewing the images that “removed it”. 3. Whatever this entity is, it’s connected to the sensation of pain. I also think this means that it’s connected to the concept of empathy, case in point when you see someone is injured, you feel the injury (men across the world certainly can relate to seeing someone else getting kicked in the nuts and feeling it themselves). I bring the empathy connection up because shortly after the SCP foundation did away with their own connection, they immediately began trying to kill off as much of humanity as possible, as efficiently as possible, and arguably as in humanely as possible. 4. “Disgust” in the context of 682, who arguably has a superiority complex brought on by its inability to die as well as regenerate from anything that attempts to destroy it, might in fact refer to weakness, or the inability to withstand something difficult. I find it rather interesting is that prior to the SCP foundation attacking humanity, they commanded all of their agents to “Harden their hearts” and they stopped simply trying to drive whatever was in humanities collective unconsciousness out of others, implying they either couldn’t anymore, or decided not to in favor of extermination. This also goes back up to 682 in that it once said that if it encountered another being like it, it would try to kill it. My conclusions: SCP-5000 is a memetic Symbiote or parasite that is connected to every human being that all around, weekends humanity by inflicting pain whenever humanity inflicts damage in the form of feeling it empathetically. This entity must’ve found humanity very early on, possibly still as Proto humans and I base this idea on chimps who have been observed to not hesitate in killing and devouring younger chimps without a second thought, simply put they don’t have empathy for one another We however do and as a result began building civilization to relieve as much of humanity’s collective suffering as possible, first in the form of tool-craft and Fire taming, then the wheel, agriculture and dwelling construction, medicine, etc. until we’ve gotten to thr present day. Now this is where it gets interesting: Without empathy, without the ability to feel the pain of another, there’s no point to civilization. The game immediately switches from collaborative, to competitive. This echoes 682’s statement that he would kill another 682 if he ever came across one and this in turn echoes with the when the MTF team commander stabs his men in the shoulder to find anyone who can feel pain. Civilization however, is an evolutionary driving mechanism. I think that there is a study out there that found that Ethiopians actually have a different walking gate compared to Westerners and the belief is This is because Westerners wear and as a result of wearing shoes we’ve started to permanently change The way we walk. Now there are plenty of really good reasons to where shoes, such as being able to easily travel rugged terrain and protection from the elements but the trade-off is that eventually in the future we’re going to have to wear shoes just to properly get around, Innoway making us weaker and more dependent on civilization which in turn means that we are becoming more dependent on one another, getting weaker in exchange for compensating technology that can only be produced in a collaborative system such as civilization. What I I think would’ve happened had things not been reset, was that humanity would have been reduced down 1 individual who surviving the extermination would have quite the Superiority complex and likely not easy to kill, in essence a human form 682. I think we may have even seen that person in the story, I think it was Dr. Bright, given both his immortality and history. What’s more the fact that he was heading towards a anomaly that would put him in another dimension, I feel like this might be a nod to 682 once again in that no one know where it came from. Dr. Bright amulet being found in another dimension would be picked up, he would take over the body of whoever picked it up and possibly become the dimensions 682 equivalent. I’m sure I’m reading a lot into this now, but I think this SCP can be taken almost as a warning to the blind adherence to dogma. The mandate of the SCP foundation has led them to do some pretty dark things as well as some odd things such as containing beneficial SCP‘s that arguably could help humanity, but they lock it away because it’s not normal and so Blindly marching off to destroy A species wide guiding entity that makes you feel pain and as a consequence have empathy just because your mandate tells you to probably isn’t a good idea. I think this entity could in fact be the guiding force of human evolution. Bringing 682 back in because he was such a heavy influence in this story apparently, and because I do reference it myself, 682 says he would likely destroy it another entity like him if he came across it. Well, he came across it. It’s humanity, just unluckily for us or whatever humanity is supposed to become, they weren’t out of the egg yet.

Seing as if it was a parasyte one would figure that the Foundation would try to create a cure of sorts; though the destruction of SCP 2000 hints that this is inherent to humans. On the surface it might seem plainly nihilistic, but the effort put into wiping out the species so thoroughly suggests something mysterious, as was the theme, that was 'wrong' with the humans in this universe. Possible that Dr. Bright threw the amulet into the parallel universe SCP for some hopeful reason. Nevertheless, great story, great cohesion with other articles and in general, a great community to discuss wonky mind boggling ideas.

The increased brain growth has allowed for increase cognitive ability allowing for higher reasoning and intern, the creation of civilization which in turn has further influenced evolution. In the SCP universe you got “reality benders”, we’ll what if their abilities are the result of this entity guided evolution of humanity through its manipulations of humanities built in evolutionary Mechanisms. In short, this entity is guiding humanity to a point of being a perfect reality bender, with the goal of possessing the perfected human as a consciousness would possess its own body and the way it’s doing that is in effect by making you feel bad for hurting someone else or not doing something to help out. As for Dr. Bright: I still largely stand by what I said, I think he could become another dimensions 682 and it’s by virtue of what he said in the story, he’s not affected by memetic but he’s still under this entities influence because he didn’t attack the main character. Ultimately I would even go so far as to say that he is the entities back up plan and provided the doctor break got to his destination before the main character got to his, there could be a copy of Dr. Bright’s amulet already in a parallel dimension restarting the whole cycle by being picked up by a monkey and Dr. Bright Monkey deciding to re-create planet of the apes.

@@preshrunk_cyberpunk5479 No, civilization isnt inherently competitive given that, as Broken Eyes mentioned a couple of times, we as humans are more and more dependent on each other, on society: our internet, our clothes, food, culture, memes... nothing would have come a out without the work of literally millions (if not all of the 100 billion people who have ever lived - you wouldn't be alive if _any_ of your predecessors had died). Whether this is good or bad is *impossible* to know, it would require knowing what _not_ living inside a civilization is. You may be confusing the idea of civilization with capitalism, which is necessarily competitive, but it is our creation and not a natural part of ourselves. Its not that competition _doesn't_ exist outside of society - it evidently does when we look at almost any living being, but we also find cooperation between individuals and, weirdly, sometimes even a sense of "survival of the species", which is the very opposite of what the story here suggests (its a great story nonetheless): it's not a special "feature" of humanity. Just so we're on the same page, neither is any form of societal structure, but living in a society is precisely what makes us "human"; not in the metaphorical sense used in the story, but a *person.*

There’s a declassification which theorizes that the entity in the psychospace is the cognitohazard that causes SCP-2718, the painful afterlife. The Foundation believes that the cognitohazard relies on the living, so if everyone is dead then everyone will be freed.
