I think the real anomaly here was the fact that pre-empathy humanity was able to reach the post-industrial age at all.

Great boots of industry, run by complete fucking complete sociopaths with no regard for human life, stomping all over nature and humans alike, are exactly how we even got here, bud. And you don't need empathy to demand worker's rights, you simply appeal to your co-workers selfish natures. Rather than limiting the work week because 12 hour shifts 7 days a week is inhumane and awful, you demand more for it because you can strangle the shit out of the "higher ups" if they dont, and without empathy, there's absolutely fucking nothing holding the pitchforks back. But then the lawman comes in and, what, massacres the entire workforce? Better to just pay them and shut them the fuck up than to pause your industry for 18 years to breed up new assholes to repeat the loop.

@travisoliver67414 ай бұрын
To be fair, its correct in an almost twisted fashion. 7841, whose level of empathy is so great that he is classed as Safe (All sapient entities are Euclid), and is willing to sacrifice themselves for a future they will never see, based purely on information from someone who abused them, _absolutely_ could not sustain vital functions for life in this sort of world.

This feels like a very satisfying answer to SCP 5000. The worst thing about that article was the open ended presentation as empathy as the presence of a parasite and a weakness where this article presents empathy as the only hope for humanity to survive.
@domonator50007 ай бұрын
I mean “worst” in the mind of an optimist maybe. To others it could be pretty spot on. Empathy is objectively a potential weakness, it’s up to the individual to decide if it’s worth the vulnerability. Man would agree it is. But some are incapable of experiencing it, others have been burned so many times that they don’t take the risk of indulging feelings of empathy.
@moonlight_scribe7 ай бұрын
@domonator5000 Except that here it clearly results in wholesale slaughter and cruelty. And empathy doesn't have to mean letting people abuse your trust. That is just an issue of setting boundaries which is not mutually exclusive with showing empathy.
@travisoliver67414 ай бұрын
@domonator5000 People incapable of experiencing empathy are generally regarded as evil and unpleasant by everyone else who actually grasps what that means. You might be able to work with them professionally, but trusting them with anything intimate (like friendship, love, and genuine camaraderie) is an inherently dangerous thing. You could not build a society if everyone was actually like this. Empathy is, unironically, the most important thing humans have. We are social creatures who, unless they have a literal psychological disorder, love msking friends and connections. Introverts might be averse to actively going out, but at least from my experiences, are happy to talk about their hobbies and interests with someone they can confidently share them with. People who try to avoid making connections due to trauma are paradoxically only really capable of moving beyond that by making connections to someone with significant empathy.

@hunter_0221 Жыл бұрын
@@moonlight_scribe It sure could be the other side of the coin, but I would also argue that the *concept of empathy* is not the casus belli in SCP-5000. Granted, it would make sense - with the stories both being by the same author, one could actually argue that SCP-7841 is the prequel to SCP-5000. 7841 describes the process by which we have been created - via the help of an anomaly - and 5000 is the Foundation finding exactly that out, recognizing our inherent anomalous properties, and try to contain them. By murdering everyone. "Harden your hearts". Though, as it usually is, I doubt it's as simple. The SCP Foundation in 5000 is still too empathetic - even the Ethics Committee unanimously decided that the anomaly would need to be excised by any means possible. I think that if Empathy would have been the offender, the Committee would have argued that it's a good thing and therefore doesn't need to be contained, especially not through global genocide. No matter how anomalous it may be. However, if it were the ability to feel Pain and other, associated negative concepts? Sorrow? Agony? That would be a different story. "Harden your hearts" could just as easily mean that you should stop feeling Pain.

A while back I decided that if I ever got ahold of a wish, I'd use this (after running it past a good contract law firm and psychologist panel): That every living human, human descendant, and intelligent human creation in perpetuity would permanently have their empathy increased by 50%, with a minimum value equal to current human average empathy, and a maximum not to exceed 100% of current human maximum empathy. The idea being to cure and prevent low/no empathy from disorders like sociopath, psychopathy, narcissism, etc. and make everyone more kind and understanding overall, but without making it so high as to become or cause a different kind of psychological disorder or inhibiting self preservation. The goal is to maximize the good effects and minimize the wrath of the Rule of Unintended Consequences For example; if you were to rate empathy on a scale from 0 to 100 with 50 being the average, it would bump everyone up to a 50-100 on that scale, with an average around 75. My math might be off though, because I have no idea how many 0-empathy people are dragging down the average, which is why I would want the minimum to be raised to a fixed, non-zero constant. The average _could_ be down near 25 on that scale. After review I'd probably have to reword the wish to change out "average" for something more accurate to the purpose of the wish, like "baseline" or something.

It's also good for people to remember that people with such disorders aren't monsters. They can love and sympathize depending on the context and individual in question. Though the medical field giving it a label as disorder is already debatable depending on individual cases such as being born with it, or developing into it, etc. Is it really a disorder if one has grown into it due to their environment? If one is born with it even then, it's a very complex topic, which is important to remember.
