I loved this one. I thought it was great how the "sociopathic" humans considered 7841's empathy an "inability to sustain vital functions for life," since they would see their own predatory nature as the natural strategy. Everything tied together very nicely. Beautiful little tale.
@travisoliver6741

To be fair, its correct in an almost twisted fashion. 7841, whose level of empathy is so great that he is classed as Safe (All sapient entities are Euclid), and is willing to sacrifice themselves for a future they will never see, based purely on information from someone who abused them, _absolutely_ could not sustain vital functions for life in this sort of world.

I think the real anomaly here was the fact that pre-empathy humanity was able to reach the post-industrial age at all.

Great boots of industry, run by complete fucking complete sociopaths with no regard for human life, stomping all over nature and humans alike, are exactly how we even got here, bud. And you don't need empathy to demand worker's rights, you simply appeal to your co-workers selfish natures. Rather than limiting the work week because 12 hour shifts 7 days a week is inhumane and awful, you demand more for it because you can strangle the shit out of the "higher ups" if they dont, and without empathy, there's absolutely fucking nothing holding the pitchforks back. But then the lawman comes in and, what, massacres the entire workforce? Better to just pay them and shut them the fuck up than to pause your industry for 18 years to breed up new assholes to repeat the loop.

This feels like a very satisfying answer to SCP 5000. The worst thing about that article was the open ended presentation as empathy as the presence of a parasite and a weakness where this article presents empathy as the only hope for humanity to survive.
@domonator5000
@domonator5000 8 ай бұрын
I mean “worst” in the mind of an optimist maybe. To others it could be pretty spot on. Empathy is objectively a potential weakness, it’s up to the individual to decide if it’s worth the vulnerability. Man would agree it is. But some are incapable of experiencing it, others have been burned so many times that they don’t take the risk of indulging feelings of empathy.
@moonlight_scribe
@moonlight_scribe 8 ай бұрын
@domonator5000 Except that here it clearly results in wholesale slaughter and cruelty. And empathy doesn't have to mean letting people abuse your trust. That is just an issue of setting boundaries which is not mutually exclusive with showing empathy.
@travisoliver6741
@travisoliver6741 5 ай бұрын
@domonator5000 People incapable of experiencing empathy are generally regarded as evil and unpleasant by everyone else who actually grasps what that means. You might be able to work with them professionally, but trusting them with anything intimate (like friendship, love, and genuine camaraderie) is an inherently dangerous thing. You could not build a society if everyone was actually like this. Empathy is, unironically, the most important thing humans have. We are social creatures who, unless they have a literal psychological disorder, love msking friends and connections. Introverts might be averse to actively going out, but at least from my experiences, are happy to talk about their hobbies and interests with someone they can confidently share them with. People who try to avoid making connections due to trauma are paradoxically only really capable of moving beyond that by making connections to someone with significant empathy.

I know this might sound hella insensitive and possibly egotistical, but I always feel unsatisfied when I hear about such a rotten state of affairs and simply don't know how it came to that. Must be one hell of a story, cautionary tale type. Likewise, I will not be able to help you anyway outside of some fake platitudes and meaning-deprived words, so what's the point? Internet really sucks in that regard. You might as well be several thousand kilometers away on another continent, and I am hearing of your plight, but I just can't do shit. Atl in most foundation versions it is capable of so much more than just the base file description. What I always like about these articles is how humans are depicted differently in either nature, origin, evolution or even variation Some of these have included Scp 2004 - where humans are psychic reality benders having been put mental restraints Scp 1788 - humans have not reach maturity of the adults Scp 939 is implied to be a subspecies of human. Scp 4275 humans in an alternate universe have shark teeth and eating habits A subspecies of human homo ignotus having a natural antimemetic camouflage Scp-5000 implies humans do not have any negative and positive emotions and should not feel pain and are soulless and innately immune to several anomalies.

@hunter_0221
@hunter_0221 Жыл бұрын
@@moonlight_scribe It sure could be the other side of the coin, but I would also argue that the *concept of empathy* is not the casus belli in SCP-5000. Granted, it would make sense - with the stories both being by the same author, one could actually argue that SCP-7841 is the prequel to SCP-5000. 7841 describes the process by which we have been created - via the help of an anomaly - and 5000 is the Foundation finding exactly that out, recognizing our inherent anomalous properties, and try to contain them. By murdering everyone. "Harden your hearts". Though, as it usually is, I doubt it's as simple. The SCP Foundation in 5000 is still too empathetic - even the Ethics Committee unanimously decided that the anomaly would need to be excised by any means possible. I think that if Empathy would have been the offender, the Committee would have argued that it's a good thing and therefore doesn't need to be contained, especially not through global genocide. No matter how anomalous it may be. However, if it were the ability to feel Pain and other, associated negative concepts? Sorrow? Agony? That would be a different story. "Harden your hearts" could just as easily mean that you should stop feeling Pain.

@@moonlight_scribe I think this is a prequel, not a sequel if they are meant to reference the same thing. 7841 added something to humanity, 5000 is finding it and cutting it out again.

@@xXShadDragXxIt could work either way. Either this is the prequel and that monstrous entity near the end 5000 is the same man as this scp but distorted over thousands of years of cycles and that distortion is the reason the foundation thinks it has to go. Or it could be a sequel to a 5000 scenario that wasn't undone by a timeline reset and the foundation was able to recreate humanity afterwards without empathy, but then realized why that's a bad thing and tried to find an anomalous human that still has it to reintroduce it to the rest of humanity.

A while back I decided that if I ever got ahold of a wish, I'd use this (after running it past a good contract law firm and psychologist panel): That every living human, human descendant, and intelligent human creation in perpetuity would permanently have their empathy increased by 50%, with a minimum value equal to current human average empathy, and a maximum not to exceed 100% of current human maximum empathy. The idea being to cure and prevent low/no empathy from disorders like sociopath, psychopathy, narcissism, etc. and make everyone more kind and understanding overall, but without making it so high as to become or cause a different kind of psychological disorder or inhibiting self preservation. The goal is to maximize the good effects and minimize the wrath of the Rule of Unintended Consequences For example; if you were to rate empathy on a scale from 0 to 100 with 50 being the average, it would bump everyone up to a 50-100 on that scale, with an average around 75. My math might be off though, because I have no idea how many 0-empathy people are dragging down the average, which is why I would want the minimum to be raised to a fixed, non-zero constant. The average _could_ be down near 25 on that scale. After review I'd probably have to reword the wish to change out "average" for something more accurate to the purpose of the wish, like "baseline" or something.

Mixed feelings about this one as I have antisocial personality disorder. Symptoms vary and connecting it to violence is a bit of a.. eh.. depends whether it is logical or not, it's not random like an outburst, but I'm glad this was addressed shortly. That symptoms vary. It's also good for people to remember that people with such disorders aren't monsters. They can love and sympathize depending on the context and individual in question. Though the medical field giving it a label as disorder is already debatable depending on individual cases such as being born with it, or developing into it, etc. Is it really a disorder if one has grown into it due to their environment? If one is born with it even then, it's a very complex topic, which is important to remember.

survival outside of lone wandering makes the necessity of empathy entirely inevitable. thus as with all things characterised as inevitable, general it can be decribed as an ultimatum from the symbolic representation of inevitability ie death (or time if you're an optimist) the ultimatum: empathise with your kin or be forever hunted to extinction by them. empathise or die not a choice as choice isn't bounded but the gun to the head that forms the great filter. funnily enough its technically just an extension of learn or die the evolutionary pressure as the kind of soulless creep who tries to argue it's lack of requirement never fails to take for granted every single effort of work that goes into maintaining their status as living. there is no such thing as a self raised baby stop falling for wild projection to cover for a sensitive ego.

Groups just have such an advantage over the strongest individuals that even if we did somehow come to something close to our current form without empathy, the first individuals that did somehow develop it or something like it, would quickly outcompete those who did not.

@@gummyboots yeah, but that’s not HUMAN empathy. I know there are plenty of places where empathy doesn’t exist in the animal kingdom - it would be detrimental to some animals - but human beings have their own evolutionary history that promotes some level of empathy us allow us to grow and thrive like we have - or at least I think so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a hard time picturing Any form of civilization even being created, let alone progressing into an indusrtrial scale, without Some empathy. It just doesn't seem likely that the cooperation necessary to build a society could take place without empathy- if everyone is "out for themselves" what is the impetus to work together at all? Suvival for survival's sake isn't going to lead to any long term collaboration, and pack mentality has to work from a foundation of trust. which to a degree, requires empathy, or an approximation of it.
@FUNKY_BUTTLOVIN

The first people who ever had any drive that resembled the drives that are created by having anything resembling empathy, would instantly have massive advantages over folks who didn't. Any number of people working together have an advantage over people who are just out for themselves, even considerably weaker people, have a huge advantage over stronger people, just by working together. I also don't think we'd have evolved into being anything like what we are, if we were not social beings with empathy. This SCP just doesn't do it for me on any level. Isn't an interesting thought to manipulate or anything, I don't know what the author was aiming for, but I think they had a mark, and missed it.
@saucevc8353

Some people would eventually figure out that working together would be more productive than being alone. It’d take a lot longer, but it’d happen eventually. It’s not like society was really THAT dependent on empathy after the Stone Age, its not like workers needed to care about their bosses or slaves cared about their masters as long as they were fed and weren’t punished.
