23 March 1911. The steamship SS Yongala is nearing the end of her 99th voyage in Australian waters. She departs the town of Mackay at 1340 (1:40 pm) en route to Townsville, Queensland. She's carrying 49 passengers, 73 crew, and 617 tons of cargo, including the racehorse Moonshine and a Lincoln Red bull. As she steams away from the shore, the Flat Top signal station receives a telegram warning of a tropical cyclone churning between Mackay and Townsville. The storm would eventually claim her.
Today, the SS Yongala lies in 30 meters (98 feet) of water 48 nautical miles southeast of Townsville in the central section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Because of her history, location, and accessibility to recreational divers, she is considered one of the best wreck dives in the world and draws over 10,000 divers every year.

Thanks for the vid! I just dived there last week; booked for two days and I'm glad because the visibility was better on one day! Those stingrays are ultrafriendly and I suspect a bit playful,. They swam around us for both dives on one day and kept coming back. the fish are so big and lots of sea snakes, turtles, a lion fish and I'm told some nemos somewhere. I saw a few nudibranch eggs (violet scrunchie stuff) so there must be nudis around but my eyesight wasn't great in the visibility, It's a fascinating dive and actually my first wreck dive.

Very cool! Yes, you gotta commit a couple days to dives like these in case the conditions are bad. The stingrays are definitely very friendly, and they are always super curious about visitors. You made some good observations, as I'm certain nudibranchs are crawling all over that wreck. Congratulations on your first wreck dive! I think the Yongala was my first wreck dive as well!

@@TidewaterTeddy I forgot to mention barracudas! But yeah, it was a good intro to wreck diving though some of the more experienced divers told me that not all wreck dives are this beautiful! I think we're just lucky that in this case, the creation of an artificial reef that is part of a marine park and penetration is disallowed etc has preserved the corals, sea life and also preserved the condition of the ship. Like you said, on another level.

@@arigato22 Yes, barracudas are always fun to see! They love wrecks! The Yongala is definitely an unbeatable intro to wreck diving. There are a lot of other cool wreck dives in the world, but few of them can match the Yongala. I can also tell you from experience on many other wreck dives that those divers are right, not all wrecks are interesting. Some are downright boring. 🥱 😂 But there are still plenty of other fascinating wrecks to see around the world.
