I lived in Topanga in the early 1980;s. I would visit the time tunnel and travel down the creek to twin lagoons where occasionally a group of Venice beatnicks (right out of the 1950's) would meet, recite poetry and smoke the evil weed. One was Louie and he actually owned the Moon Fire Temple at the time which included all the major religions. I think i heard it was one half of a square mile at the time.

Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (1944-1983) had a home in the canyon. He picked up two hitchiking girls off of PCH. This started the invasion of his home by the "Manson Family". Topanga Canyon Blvd. is at the west side of the San Fernando Valley. It runs into the Santa Monica Mts. On the east side of the valley (a natural break in the Santa Monica Mts.) is Verdugo Pass. The traditional and ancient geological exit from the valley. Hitchhiking from the valley (in the 60's-70's) over Topanga Canyon, all the way to the beach was the cheapest, fastest way to get to the beach as a teen. The Manson family was living up in Spahn's Ranch in the Santa Susana Mts (Simi Hills.) Coincidently this was pretty much at the northern end of, Topanga Canyon Blvd. Charlie probably had the girls out hitching to see what they could come up with. They scored big with Dennis Wilson.

There was a large concrete drainage tunnel near to where I grew up. As kids we walked thru the woods and played there. It was about 10 feet square and a few hundred feet long. It passed under Interstate 20. When I was a teenager it came in handy knowing it's location. My car was broke down at the time and I bought an old motorcycle to get around for a few weeks. Being a teenager and needing my money to fix my car, I didn't waste a bunch of money buying tags and insurance for 'the bike'. I happened to be in a little hurry on a 'frontage' road that paralleled the interstate one day. A Deputy Sheriff decided to turn around as I passed him. I didn't know what he was doing but thought it would be better if we didn't stop and talk. I rode down the embankment and thru the 'tunnel'. When I came out the other end it was a different time! I was enjoying a slow ride along a path in the woods and no one was wanting to bother me. What a drastic change in time, in just a few moments! Great video and Glad to hear from yall. Take Care and be safe, John

That was a pretty cool exploration! It would be something to be standing below that tunnel on its far side when a flash flood comes through it. That would take some planning and timing in order to be down there before a heavy rain storm hits. Nice creek area below that drainage tunnel! Thanks for taking some time to show that and the little waterfall.

You mentioned that you did not know how the storm drain got to be called the time tunnel but I would like to propose a guess. In 1966 there was a short-lived TV series called “The Time Tunnel.” I have a feeling that prior to that time it had no name.

Interesting I never heard of that spot. I was dumb in high school and rode my bike on Topanga Canyon. It wasn't nearly as busy as now. There is a semi-secret spot trail off Malibu Canyon kind of like this where people go to check out the Rindge Dam. A guy died there a couple years ago so I heard the made it tougher to get there now. Kind of a freaky place and not good place if you are afraid of heights.
