■Story
The story of the Hachiko statue in Shibuya is both touching and historically significant. Hachiko was an Akita dog known for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at the University of Tokyo. Every day, Hachiko would wait for his owner at Shibuya Station to return from work.
Sadly, in 1925, Professor Ueno passed away unexpectedly while at work, but Hachiko continued to wait for him at the station every day for the next nine years until his own death in 1935. This display of loyalty touched the hearts of the Japanese people.
Recognizing Hachiko's devotion, a bronze statue in his likeness was erected in 1934 at Shibuya Station, even before Hachiko's own death. The statue became a symbol of loyalty and a popular meeting spot. It was temporarily removed during World War II for metal collection, but a new statue, sculpted by Takeshi Ando, son of the original artist, was installed in 1948.
Today, the Hachiko statue is a popular landmark in Shibuya, representing not only the devotion of a pet to its owner but also serving as a cultural icon in Japan, frequently visited by both locals and tourists.
