My mom bought me a cheap butterfly light up stick that sounded like it was being played through a car crash as the rubble compressed and shattered at a fair. I loved it when I was a kid but as I got older I didn't care about it anymore so I just tossed it somewhere. For the next five years I would randomly find it and it would play out that song and the quality of the song was never good but it got worse as the years went on till at some point it also began to sound like it was also being waterboarded but aslo really screechy. I finally snapped and threw it in the garbage when my parents weren't looking. Now every time i hear Butterfly all i can think of is that god forsaken stick.

I actually learned to play DDR by putting Stepmania in no-fail mode and pretending to play using my basement tile floor as a rough approximation. Did this regularly for at least 4 or 5 months before I could scrounge enough money to buy Supernova on PS2. At that point I was good enough to hop straight into the easier expert songs so it worked pretty well. Now I have an actual Supernova cabinet at home I feel like I kinda went full circle

10:56 When I was a kid my sister had something similar. It was like a self-contained DDR council system. It came with a box that projected the arrows up onto the wall and two game pads that plugged into it. As far as we could tell the game pads did absolutely nothing. They provided zero feedback so the fact that they plugged into the machine was literally just for show. The projector was also extremely cheep, kind of like those holiday decorations that project static images onto your house. Also it could only play like three songs and they all sucked.

I remember seeing this video when it was relatively new. I remember getting so hyped up when I saw the segment about StepManiaX. As of now, a new arcade had opened in my area in southeastern Pennsylvania that has a StepManiaX cabinet. It absolutely lives up to the hype. As much as I always thought I'd be a 4 panel DDR/ITG purist, my experience with StepManiaX has changed that. And seeing how many other people are getting hyped about StepManiaX and how much Kyle Ward loves to interact with fans, I hope to see a growing future for StepManiaX. The stage pad is definitely the best dance pad I've ever used. And the 5th center panel is really easy to adapt to for someone like that's been playing 4 panel DDR/ITG for over 15 years. I could play it for hours.

A majority of DDR X2 songs are on it, and some of the Konami originals that were on it would later arrive in later DDR games like DDR X3, DDR 2013/2014, DDR A, DDR A20/A20 Plus, and DDR A3. Playing some StepManiaX when I get home from work today, feels good :) Best pad I've ever used and I've played on a ton of pads since I started in 2003. My other favorite will always be the ITG 2 dedicab pads. A classic. BTW, Kyle Ward deserves all the praise I've seen heaped onto him over the years. The man literally gave me his phone number and WANTED to talk to me one-on-one over the phone when I emailed about something that was on my mind. I thought to myself ".....wait....he has time to do that? And he....WANTS to?" His customer service is second to none and I mean that. He's incredibly passionate about the rhythm game community and it shows. When was the last time you can say that the creator/owner/contributor of a company/product emailed you or personally called you in order to discuss a possible concern of yours? It just doesn't happen. I'm not trying to place Kyle Ward on a pedestal but damn it if his work ethic and enthusiasm doesn't deserve to be recognized! He's a complete people pleaser and I can't thank him (and his teams throughout the years!) enough for everything he's contributed to rhythm games! Also, 9:32 This has been my exact experience too. Things got a bit toxic at times (certain people and certain aspects of the dance game community) circa 2007 and beyond. Players talking down to me and acting as if I should just innately know certain things. It honestly ended up being what kept me away from interacting with most of the rhythm game community online (and sometimes in person), I simply lurked and watched from the stands. No matter how good I knew I was, I was never a "pro" and I was never as good as certain people at the arcades I'd play at (won't name any names lmao) so sometimes, I'd experience that whole "You're not on my level, don't even talk to me." thing with the higher tier players. It was never everyone but there were/are definitely elitists out there, as with everything, I suppose. And I'm not gonna kid myself, I was at my prime back in 2005! These days, I'm an outta shape single dad lol. Anyway, my experience as an SMX player has been nothing but positive. Shout out to Dimo for taking time out to write me a detailed KZbin reply on one of his videos when I asked him about timing stuff! Should out to Werdwerdus for making me feel welcomed on Discord and as someone who is starting to stream SMX! And shout out to everyone in the SMX discord who has answered questions I've had or commented on various tips I've recommended for "modding" your SMX home experience! It's a great thing to see and be a part of and I love that because I'm getting my daughter into rhythm games now so it's possible she might one day interact with the community whether in person or online. No one has ever made me feel stupid for not knowing something and no one has ever laughed at me or ignored me. People have simply been helpful and friendly, I'm really appreciative of that!
@planetclue
@planetclue 3 жыл бұрын
hey man, this was a really good read and it's awesome to meet you. you definitely hit the nail right on the head with the elitism thing! i guess it just comes with the property of being a pro, but i would really, really like that to change. hardcore players are way too heavy-handed, and it scares off new people from getting into it -- i was certainly a victim of that for many years. it's not just rhythm games, it's any hardcore community (smash bros, fighting games, etc). while i was getting back into the game really hard in 2018 i found myself constantly interacting with jerks that expected me to know everything already when i was just trying to reach out for help. when i was asking the community's opinions on things for the ddr video script, i discovered topics that you absolutely cannot bring up around 4-panel fans without getting your ass kicked. one example being, never bring up the client you play with. for example, stepmania 5.1, etterna, outfox, nITG, etc. it's like the console wars: people will always think whatever they use is the best. never refer to 'simcharts' as 'maps'. never say 'playing ddr', say 'playing 4-panel'. stupid semantic bullshit like that is what scares people off! my biggest goal with the ddr video was to bring some positive energy that will bring people together instead of continue to perpetuate this horribly alienated community. we all want the same thing: we just wanna hit arrows, man. why does it have to be so heated? thanks for reaching out, man, and make sure to not let them get to you. deep down this community really does love this game, but they need to be reminded that not everyone has all the knowledge on all the minute details about a specific video game.

I think I see the problem with your handbar. At 5:00, when you wiggle it forwards and backwards, notice that it isn't the bar that's moving, but the entire platform it's attached to. Of course, I'm no expert on the construction and engineering of DDR dance pads, but if you could somehow secure the trapezoid bit the bar is attached on to the square area where the rest of the pad is, that should (hopefully, anyway) fix your issue. Great video by the way. I'm not at all into DDR (tbh I only clicked because of that weird-looking game boy accessory in the thumbnail) but this was really interesting.

So I don't find L-Tek to be "C" tier. I had 2 Cobalt Fluxes in the past and my L-Tek holds up _much_ better. The old CF's I could barely muster 10s (old scale) and the accuracy suffered after a few months. My L-Tek pad has been wonderful, accurate and I haven't modded it at all. Granted, I'm not Marvelous attacking ITG songs, but I consistently PFC songs in Stepmania using default judgement settings.

Pro tip - use an external standalone mechanical numpad. The one I'm running is a brushed aluminum case with medium weight linear switches and xda profile keycaps dye subbed with the official DDR solo arrows. The outer keys (+ - * / , numlock, etc) are set up with the heaviest tactile switches I could find so I get the physical feedback if I accidentally get off center and hit one. Having said all that, an actual official DDR or ITG arcade pad would be my end game.
