Exploring Vietnam's First National University | Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature located in Hanoi, Vietnam is Vietnam's First National University and was built in the year 1070. It is a temple dedicated to Confucius with many pavilions, halls, statues, and courtyards. I had the pleasure to visit and was really impressed with what I saw!

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu) is so rich in history, and I love the architecture. 😍 I'm impressed with the well preservation and sturdiness of this temple for being 954 years old! 49:11 It's cool that they allow visitors to walk upstairs. 58:24 You're too tall for the archway. 😂 59:54 The Watermelon Juice looks refreshing and delicious. 🍉 Thank you for sharing this tour and experience, AK! 🤗

What are the slabs of upright stone at 12.48? And what do those tortoises upholding the stones signify?

Those are stone tablets engraved the names of the graduated scholars of that particular years. The tortoises represent longevity, because they can live 100-200yrs, when they carried the stone tablet on their back it signified the names of the scholars will be forever written in history. Unfortunately before they put up the barriers students used to come here for their final exams and rubbed their hands on the tablets for good luck, plus weather, war, time, everything washed away the scriptures.

This place explains why school in Vietnamese is called "trường" from the Chinese word 場 Tràng or Trường (1 Mandarin, 1 Cantonese) use simultaneously the same way as Chinese, meaning a big open space, field, square etc. Back in the days, students and scholars have to sit in a big open ground to do their exams. There's a street in Hanoi called "Tràng Thi" 場 試 running by Hoan Kiem Lake, this place used to hold another level of the royal exams, the French came and built a library here and today it's the National Library. Today Vietnam call Trường Học 場 學 (School), and Thư Viện 書院 (Library) Chinese speakers probably think Vietnam using ancient words, but vice versas, Vietnamese seeing modern Chinese words Học Hiệu 學校 (school) Đồ Thư Quán 圖書館 (library) they think these are fancy words in old kungfu movies I like that you don't cut corners, it's consistent so I don't have to guess where and what.
