Amazing video, thank you! 👍 It's really weird, that they were building a fast ferry in 1999, only to be surprised 5 years later that running this kind of ship is rather expensive and then decomission it. Weren't they able to calculate the costs before? 🙈 Seems like a lot of money was scrapped too. And what a waste of ressources to build such a big ship for only a few years of usage. Normally, such a ship should be in service for a couple of decades.

the cost of steel and fuel went up while they were building these. Alaska had 2 fast ferries built around the same time and it was the same sob story "we cant afford to run these vessels that we just spend 100 million building" so we sell them to the lowest bidder and take a massive loss

Read some articles about superfast ferries with diesel plus gas turbine drives and speeds around 35 ot 40 knots. Most of them changed ownership quite often and didn't stay long in service overall, mostly 10 to 20 years instead of 30 to 40 years with normal, slower ships. Fuel burn must have been enormous and most people didn't want to pay the higher ticket prices for winning a few hours travel time.
