I wanted to ask you about the Plasti Dip that you did with your van. My wife and I finally found a van and have started the process of converting it. We are excited. We really like the way your van turned out and like even more the cost of the Plasti Dip vs paint. When you did your van, where did you purchase the Plasti Dip kit? How many gallons were needed for covering the van? Aside from videos on the Plasti Dip site where did you find videos for using the product? Btw, I found the blog link in the comments below but it didn't work. Thanks very much for your help with this. Hope you two are well!

Great job using that stuff. Maybe if it is looking pretty good after 2 years, you can spray it again with 2-3 coats to extend its life. If there is some "damage", maybe you can get or make a vinyl sticker to apply to that area. Just a thought. Safe travels.

im thinking about doing part of my truck in this product,and an wondering if i can use a regular paint gun like u would use to paint a car cause i have one from a previos paint job on a truck yrs ago ,i bought it because i needed one to spray metal flake paint thru the gun ,the other gun o had access to at the time the tip was to small i think ,its been a while since i did it ,seems it was cheeper to buy the gun than to buy a tip for someone elses or somthing of that sort ,also im leary about it lasting very long as u said 2 yrs mabe 3,but with other things scratch it ,inwander how soft it is for scratch resistance,,thank u ,ur van looks awsome dude,and wen u sprayed that thinner on it seemed as if i could see it making it all blend together even the spray lines u spoke of ,so if u are still concerned it may help to do a spray of it over the whole van to blend the spray patterm u spoke of ,thank you for showing this how much did it take to do the initial coat in gun metal ,,thank u again blessings ur guys way every day

I have no clue on using a hvlp gun with this. I don't believe it would work the same way we did it, but I believe there is a formula that is made for that kind of application. There is a facebook group called "dippers anonymous" that has a bunch of guys who seem to be pretty knowledgeable about the stuff in there who could probably point you in the right direction. To do the whole project (including the thinner to fix our mistake) was $740. This was for 10 gallons of plastidip. You couldn't do just the grey like we did as it would have been too thin. (only 2 coats). You would need to replace the coats of sand we did with extra grey coats (lol @ grey coats...)

spraying the straight xylene on to get the paint to flow out might act on the bonding of the paint eventually (making the paint blister over time or driving in hard wind and seeing sheets peel of the hood , stuff like that) from wat i could see on the video it turned out realy nice though

Yeah, that definitely made us nervous and only time will tell how it holds. After a trip from Oklahoma to Colorado and back, we only have one spot that has bubbled up a bit, but it was on a hard to reach seam where there definitely could have been some moisture or grime during spraying. No telling though... Thanks again!!

Wow, the end results look great! My van looks OK for a '94 model, no dents but a few scratches and the clear has peeled off the roof and top of the hood. I remember "Backroad Vanner" did some kind of sand colored bed liner stuff all over his van but he had to use a friend with an industrial compressor. I was just wondering if you considered that option? I think he said it was $800-1000 for materials but not sure. Did you folks pick this option so you could easily go back to white in the future? Personally I think the best part was it's DIY and watching you 2 take on the task and getting good results is cool all by itself.
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! We hadn't considered that option. Plastidip was just the first thing that we came across that seemed like it would fit the bill. That, and we don't tend to over analyse different options into oblivion. One of the reasons that the 'removable' aspect was attractive was if it looked like junk or we screwed up since it was our first time doing something like this. Thanks again! :D :D

I had to laugh, in the 1970's I spayed dozens of custom murals and graphics on new vans for dealerships. The Dodge maxi was around 17 feet long being the biggest. Private customers never complained about prices, but dealerships...another story. I am amazed at your courage to attempt this out doors in an uncontrolled environment ... not too shabby. I always tell students to make sure they use a charcoal respirator, you can't grow new lungs.

It seems always so simple when others are doing it...... You did a good job. But i have a question (maybe you spoke about it in the video but i didn't catch it) : why did you paint it first with an other color ? Is it a kind of undercoating for better grip ?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We painted with grey first basically just because that's how plastidip told us how to do it. We just trusted their experience. It had something to do with the sand color covers up a dark color better than it covers up a white color.

What was the purpose of the grey first coats? Could u start with sand and do grey only on the trim/Hood? Or is it a primer?

Nice work guys! My van is also commercial white like yours was, I was thinking of adding some sort of vinyl decal or those rv waves and that's at least a couple of hundreds $$ and pretty ugly, I already used black plastidip on the wheels, I was considering dipin the whole van grey like your hood, thanks for giving me a budget price. I have to admit a couple of things where holding me back frome going on with this option, considering it's a campervan there might be more chances of "rubbing" from equipment like ropes/straps/bikes/etc... Also I have a lot of openings like refrigerator vents/electricity/plumbing and I don't know if I should simply paint the caulking and pray I don't have any leaks or re-caulking to do...
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Yeah, the way I figure, I wouldn't want straps or anything rubbing on my paint anyway, so that's just a little motivation to keep rigging squared away. I, personally, would just plastidip over everything and if it leaked and or needed recaulking, you can always re-spray just that little area.
@evypr0ductions7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, so if I understand correctly (after reading your comments) it took you guys 10 gallons / 6 coats, and after doing it, 7 coats would've been ideal for optimal thickness. But since I'm leaving the top white (hidden/unnoticeable) I'll go with 10 gallons also. Tell me if my idea is good or not, I was shopping online and I noticed that they have sales/clearance, for example camo brown is 39$/gallon right now on DYC. I could buy a cheaper gallons of any color for the 3 coats base and then add 4 top coats of my selected color??

Hot Climates = Keep it white to reflect the sun ! Dark colours attract heat ! I don't know this Plastidip product but i would be using a light colour in hot temps . Sprinter vans rust infront of your eyes here in the UK ! So a paint coating is wise on sprinters and transits .
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Yep! That's why we kept it a lighter color. The gunmetal grey color looks good, but I can imagine it being HOT!
@elleryjqueen17127 жыл бұрын
Paul your dead on about that rust,I fear I will wake up one day to find my 2011 crafter has disappeared, the rust just bleeds out overnight. I cant help but think this plasterdip is a mistake if it only lasts three years! how ruff does it look after two years? Paint every time for me and its about the same effort to apply and costs less
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Right? Rust is definitely no good. The cool thing about plastidip is that if it looks like crap after 2 years, we can peel it off just like a vinyl wrap and either respray it, vinyl wrap it, paint it, or do whatever else we want. As far as painting costing less than plastidip, maybe it's different where you are from, but to have our van professionally painted was going to cost nearly $10,000. No thanks on that. If paint were cheaper, we would definitely go that route, but the cost/benefit analysis heavily leaned in favor of plastidip.
@elleryjqueen17127 жыл бұрын
Hi Guys, I guess its easy for me to say use paint as I have the facility to do my own paintwork, but I think with a bit of practice you guys could paint your own van also, I love to see a couple working together on a project, good luck and stay safe on your adventures. Regards from the uk

I have used Plastidip on many things for ages, however on my van that I drive offroad, I went with Scorpion Bed liner ( it is a 3 part system if you go to IG look up VanDogCEO and can see the grey huge stripe I just did weeks agao) and can be sprayed with a compressor using a hopper gun, or the route I went, using the wagner AZ sprayer they sell, it was WAY less overspray then what you would get with a hopper. The price is super good, and unlike plastidip it will not scratch from just a branch rubbing against it!!!
@jasonglaspey7 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how the Plastidip has held up on the black plastic trim that encircles the van? Mine is severely sun bleached and I'm considering Plastidipping it to make it look black again. Any problems with the dip sticking to that area?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
So far so good! Prepwork seems to be key. Make sure it's nice and clean and be sure to apply plenty of coats! Thanks for watching! We were told by plastidip that their black color is the quickest fading color they have. It should still last a bit, but you may get better longivity out of a gunmetal grey color. (like our hood and lower area color)
@jasonglaspey7 жыл бұрын
Ah, good to know on the fading... that's exactly what I'm trying to eliminate. And totally fine to have non-black, gunmetal would actually look better, just needs to be uniform and not sun-bleached :) -- Thanks for replying!

No actually. The time lapse and the loose plastic make it seem like it is more windy than it really was. It was actually pretty calm that day. I would HIGHLY advise against spraying when it's windy though to avoid dust, as well as avoiding the 'fuzzy' problem we talked about, and keeping the spray pattern even.

Thanks for showing Plasti-Dip application from an actual user's point of view - far more informative than watching a professional apply it in a dedicated spray booth. Did you have any issues with dust/debris embedding itself in the coating? I've been considering "dipping" my van but have no garage/booth to spray it in and have been holding off for fear that spraying outside will get a million and one bugs/leaves/dust bubbles in the finish.
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! So, plastidip is not like paint. Dust won't make it bubble, plastidip will coat right over it. That being said, you do need to wait until a day there is no wind, which will make spraying better, but also keep dust in the air down. If you are in an area with a ton or bugs, it may not be the best idea, but you'd know that better than me. It's not nearly as temperamental as paint, but those are still considerations.

Love your van and videos! I'm curious why you guys painted the van grey first and then go over it with sand? Also do you think the sand color is more efficient than grey for repelling light/heat? ...and also I think the sand would hide dirt and dust better too? Why plastidip over raptor or line-x?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Spraying the whole thing grey then sand was how plasti-dip recommended doing it, so that's how we did it. The sand is likely a bit more effective for reflecting light/heat, but I don't have statistics to back that claim up, so I can't say for sure. As far as plastidip over raptor or line-x: I hadn't heard of raptor until after the project was done and I still don't know anything about it. For line-x, to spray a truck bed is over $500, so I imagine spraying an entire van would be well into the multi-thousands of dollars range.

@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I quite understand your first comment, but plastidip is somewhere between the smoothness of paint and bedliner. There is definitely a texture, but not enough you can't run a rag over it without the texture grabbing the rag. If we sprayed it on a cool day in the shade, it would have been even smoother. It's really not supposed to have much texture to the finish.

Great vid! Thinking of doing this as well. If I were to put in some windows, do you think it'd be wise to plasti dip before or after putting in windows?
@livingthedream55604 жыл бұрын
Fit windows first 👍

Agreed. Windows first.

❓❓Was it the first airless spray job you carried out❓❓ Nearly close to perfection and that blows my mind since it is hard to make it even.
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
It was the first airless spray job on a vehicle we've done. I've done airless spraying on walls in a house...but that's not really the same, eh? lol Thanks so much! It's definitely not as smooth as the pro's get it, but it's pretty satisfactory for our first time for sure!

Then indeed outstanding. Cheers for the reply!

You mentioned a Facebook group; what is the name of that group? What are other resources that you recommend checking out for information? Thanks!
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
+Kate Burelle The group is "dippers anonymous". That one is good, but there are a lot of professionals in the group, so the DIY aspect is lost a bit, but it's still fun to see what is capable. The KZbin channel that is handy is the Dip Your Car channel. Thanks for watching! Are you thinking about going this route?

Adventure in a Backpack I'm in the beginning stages of researching van life. I'm looking to take a gap year between undergrad and grad school and am hoping to travel the country van style. Love your channel, and really appreciate all the DIY van videos!

Never knew this was possible. Fantastic way to preserve the vehicle wile enjoying a color of your choice other than that of the manufacturer. Great job. Thanks for sharing. Where do you buy this kit?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
It's pretty new to us as well. We think it's a pretty solid option, especially given the price compared to vinyl or paint. Thanks so much! You can get the kit from DipYourCar.com

Looks good using plastidip slipped my mind! I was thinking on having the local vo-tech paint mine or wrap it! But I'm glad you did thus and make me think about the plastidip again! What made you to decide on the colors?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Yeah!! Us too! I had heard about it before, but had forgotten about it. We wanted an 'earthy' feel to it. We were thinking either all grey, forest green, or sand. We figured the sand color would be 'cooler' in the sun than the others.

I love the colors. I never heard of this product before. Our son in law sprayed some kind of rust barrier under our truck, if you're interested I can find out the name of it.

Awesome! I had heard of it a long time ago, but had forgotten about it. Good stuff!
He also said to stay away from the knock off brands. They're not as good.

Why did you coat the entire upper half grey only to then coat it brown?
@EXPLORISTlife7 жыл бұрын
Apparently the grey covers better and goes on a little thicker than then tan. This way is just how the reps for plastidip recommended we do it.

I see, good stuff. Thanks! I might use this.

So, I just purchased a 2014 extended high roof 3500 Ram Promaster Van. I was wondering if you feel the Plastic Dip is like another layer of insulation? I was wondering if an extra couple gallons sprayed on the inside of the cargo area after the rattle sound proofing and before the insulation board would be a good idea. Any thoughts on that? Also this van was a dealerships parts van and there are many dents some from the inside out and some from the outside in. They also had a horrible driver so there are many scratches along both sides and in the back. I have a dent fixer to look at it when it warms up some and he will do what he can. Do you think the Plastic Dip will help conceal some of this? The van is currently white and I was looking at maybe the aluminum color of Plastic Dip. In your comments, I think you said you would do a 6 month video about the plastic dip.... any regrets? One last thing, the van came with a solid bulkhead partition. Any suggestions on how to find a buyer to part with this piece of equipment? I have watched a ton of your videos and really appreciate your honest hard work and educating others. Thank you!!! May your New Year be blessed beyond measure!

Nice! I do not think the plastidip is another layer of insulation. I wouldn't think of plastidip of anything more than a good way to change the appearance of the van. It's essentially like spraying on a vinyl wrap...no more...no less... Will do a 1 year review so we can see how it holds up to wintertime. So far, so good though! No clue about the bulkhead. Facebook groups perhaps?
@judymorris50027 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that the rubberized plastic dip would certainly fill and block any small areas like where the molding is attached which is usually a site that can leak water or wind into the van. So thanks, I won't get extra to do an inside coat before the insulation board. I want my van to be warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. I can't wait to see your update! Unfortunately for me. At my first oil change, I discovered that I needed all 4 brake pads and 4 new rotors and 1 new caliber, setting me back $2,000! I will also need to wait for it to warm up some as I don't have a garage. I will be doing my outside the way you did. Since I live in Kentucky, it has been extremely cold this winter. So maybe your review will come before my finances and weather... sigh. Thanks a million for all your help and your replies. I love watching all your videos and I have learned a lot from you! Thanks again and have a very blessed new year!

3 to 5 years!, you wore me out just watching, although I can still barely recall my energizer bunny days last century. If no one else mentioned it you could use a couple 10 or 12 foot step ladders with a board in between for spraying the roof. I have all kinds of scaffold but it would be in the way at some point. Also looks like an "inside" job if you know what I mean. Nice colors, I'm partial to gray but the 2 tone looks better.

Great job. I have watched quite a few of dipyourcar videos and obviously they have it all set up in a garage with professional sprayers, extractor fans etc, so you would expect it to turn out perfect. This is the first real life plastidip video I have watched and you certainly nailed it even with the heat, the wind and applying it outdoors. I agree with other commenters - great colour choice.

Haha, yeah a garage would have made the whole thing SO much easier. Just being out of the sunlight would have been a huge help. Thanks so much! :D :D
