4:08 he said that area used to be"บ้านไม้ตำรวจ (police's wooden house)" not new house. 8:53 she said "เป็นล็อคๆ" isn't meant that locked up but just old people language meaning "sections or lots" thai old people have many broken English words 😅 16:53 she said "ไม่เอา! เห็นจะสร้างคอนโดตรงนี้ตั้งหลายปีแล้ว แต่เห็นเงียบไปเลย ไม่สร้าง" meaning "I don't want the condos, (I see) they said they(the government) will build here many years ago but they just staying silent, didn't build anything." many misunderstanding 😅

Another good documentary. Klong Toei must be one of the old neighborhoods you can visit by riding a river boat and go for a walk. It looks really familiar. I didn't learn the river boat public transit until my 3rd visit to Bangkok. Like in American cities, they'll be displaced by global corporate real estate developers which not only displaces the working class, but causes rents and the cost of living to go way up. Even motels are many times more expensive today than just 20 years ago. It's gotten so crazy and horrible in America. It would be tough for a foreigner in BKK to get by for one day on 600 baht or about $20, but one can get a room and eat on that for a day, even riding the river boats for the fares and room rates are very economical. I can only get by living in America out of having veteran benefits for housing and public transit otherwise I'd be homeless and dead. That is what displaced low income people are increasingly facing in many countries as real estate developers speculate up all areas including rural such as Blackrock, Bill Gates, and the China CCP. All those are increasingly a dangerous threat to the entire world.

I live (four months a year) in the district of Khlong Toei but north of Rama IV, bordering on the wealthy area of Thong Lor. I have visited 'The Continent' which is not that easy to access on foot. I am confused by this 900sqm area that is often referred to. 9000sqm surely? It must be that it has just been repeated again and again. I enjoyed your video and was impressed by your ability to engage in Thai. My efforts are quite poor, but I am about three times your age! Thank you.

Relocation of villages and slums was done enmass during the 60s and 70s in Singapore. At that time there were mass protest but looking back at the eventual development of the economy and standard of living today, that was the right move.
@wehatethecold8 ай бұрын
I agree with you, there definitely needs to be development there otherwise it will never get any better. But, these people have been there since 1950 and initially helped to develop the Bangkok in its first days. Hopefully a good solution is found
@ElijahBenjamin-ug6op8 ай бұрын
@@wehatethecold yes, what I think is the government on their part is to put up an initiative to supply them with top class housing to relocate to as an incentive for them to relocate. The finances will be more than covered since they are going to bring in a whole lot from the new development.

On hindsight it "may" seem to be better for the collective, but individual people's lives get completely fucked up. I am very familiar with that community, I have friends there - we have each others mobile number. Within the first 20 seconds I recognized several friends. Moving them to other areas would completely destroy their social fabric. It's a tight-knit community where people know each other very well and see each other every single day. If they get moved they will get spread around and have to start again to build a new community.

Home to only eighty thousand people. That chicken feed. Here in India slums are home to at least half a million soul all grinding out a survival as best as they can in the blistering heat of the Indian summer.

Interesting! Apparently the 90s was the year it was really bad there
@FarangNick8 ай бұрын
Depends on what is meant by "stayed there a few times" : a lot of people don't understand the difference between the Khlong Toey district and this particular community in Khlong Toey. Can't stay there in that community in hotel or guesthouse or anything like that, because there just isn't any. Only way is if stay with a Thai you'd know, or possibly rent a room in a house or shack directly. Also you can't end up there by coincidentally passing.

My girlfriend and her family had 2 houses there. Her Father ran away with his daughter to 7o Rai after murdering someone in Korat if I remember correctly so it was no coincidence, I lived nearby in Soi Sribumpen for around 10 years but went to 70 Rai regularly, it was no big deal. @@FarangNick

One night when I stayed one of the neighbours was drunk and let off a few rounds, other than that not much happened, lots of drink and I remember my girlfriend kept her cousin chained to a bed to keep him off heroin but would keep him supplied with Sangthip. Lots of rats in the gaps between the houses where they`d throw some of their rubbish straight out of the back windows, the rubbish was nearly up to the window sills.@@wehatethecold
