The Khlong Toei Slum...Nine hundred square meters of narrow alleys and ramshackle buildings, a tiny plot of land with an outsized reputation in Thailand as the most notorious address in the country. Now hidden behind high concrete walls and slated for demolition, Khlong Toei is almost forgotten in a country fast developing.
But Khlong Toei deserves better. It's a place where a unique blend of people came together almost seven decades ago and a one-of-a-kind culture emerged through shared hardship and struggle. And it's a place that's still standing because it has one of the most fascinating food scenes anywhere on Earth.
So we went in and- despite planning a single morning of filming- stayed for three full days, meeting the people, hearing their stories, and finding a community in the heart of Khlong Toei slum.

(EDIT) Ok, one thing to quickly mention- I've deleted a few (3 or 4) comments that basically say, "it's not a slum, it's just a wet market" or something along those lines, usually in much more colorful language. To quickly answer this and why I deleted those comments- it's literally right at the beginning of this video where we explain how this and the market area are two completely different places, several KM apart. Yes, they have the same name. That comes from the district (also called Khlong Toei) where both belong. Both are remarkable areas- but the name is all they have in common as they have nothing to do with each other. Hope that's clear. Now and more importantly: Many people have asked in the comments or through private messages on Instagram how to find Chef Gaa's amazing lunch counter in the middle of the neighborhood. Jaspar and I (along with Chris from CCD) went back yesterday to catch up with our old friends from Khlong Toei and have a few fantastic meals, and I pinned Chef Gaa's place on the map. Anyone interested in checking it out, it's here: goo.gl/maps/196pLLkSAq35Zv7x8 Also, for some of the other places mentioned in this video: The Chinese-Thai Radna noodle shop: goo.gl/maps/B1THBxjhKnoX42bp8 Cooking with Poo: goo.gl/maps/JCfN1DF76oUNpTB7A Khmer Num Pang: goo.gl/maps/K9usfdK4nz6K31jK8 Any other specific requests, let me know in the comments.

This is an amazing documentary to give us a deeper look into the hidden part of Thailand / Bangkok. I'm born Thai, but been raised in the Western world, and have always been told that Klong Toei is the slum / dangerous neighbourhood. But never once thought that it has such a rich history and story behind it. The quality, the narration and story is top-notch. Thank you, you have earned yourself a subscriber!

I`m a western (Netherlands) expat in Thailand, moved here when i was 23 and have been here non stop for the past 11 years. And must say, even this area is super safe! Never had any problem with Thai people, they are so easy going it`s almost impossible. Only way to get in trouble here is if you are looking for it, and be very persistent at it haha. It`s safer than any city of village in the Netherlands! My friend is a co-founder of the Bangkok Community Help Foundation and is daily giving away more than a thousand meals for free, refurbishing burned down homes or build new ones, literally tons of rice and mandatory supplies. People there are so genuinely thankful and nice, it`s wonderful

@@roynijland7386 Yes, would agree with all of that. However there's been a lot of work by a lot of people- mainly those in the community, but also advocates like the Bangkok Community Help Foundation- that has made it a safe place. In the 1990s it was a very, very different situation for Khlong Toei.

Hi there! This documentary is just excellent! I'm Thai, I live in Bangkok, and I hope our to-be new Prime Minister see this video and realize how important the people at Khlong Toei Continent are. I don't see a reason why we can't just give them the lands that they've been living in for generations and move on to other parts of Bangkok where empty spaces are still waiting to be developed. These people deserve their homes!

I hope you dont mind me contacting you via YT, I read you comment about living in Khlong toei and I was wondering if you would like to show me around the area. I am coming to Bangkok for a few days In May this year so in a few months. I have been to Thailand two times before but have never visted this area as I never heard anything about before until now seeing this vlog. I'm not a reporter but i am planning on making you tube vlogs once I arrive in Thailand of course i will pay you for your time and pay for food and drinks for you too. If you are interested or know someone who might be then I would be very keen to speak with you or them. Im Vietnamese, THAI PPL IS BEAUTIFUL & FRIENDLY!! Your cultures somehow have fews things similar at us, not at all but Asian/Southeast Asian have some points similar Because our soils land, weather, veggies fruits, herbs, etc.. is similar so that’s why our eating style & food ingredients cooked is similar. THAILAND IS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, honestly they have almost everything to growing agricultural to products more foods to feeding their ppl. But it sad is many parts of THAILAND IS STILL POOR, I mean very poor more than I though VIETNAM is developing countryside & still poor in many areas/countryside as well. This is true facts & im not hidden & shameful to covert this. Poor here mean don’t have house or no luxury house, no good motorbike & no cars, BUT FOODS HERE IS CHEAP & AFFORDABLE. I mean poor ppl never care about foods & they can eat much as they can. Im shock when in Manila poor ppl in slum Manila - many of them don’t even have foods & eat “left over foods” THIS IS CRAZY & UNBELIEVABLE POOR THAN WHAT I EVER THOUGH

Many Southeast Asia countries have almost everything BLESS BY EARTH - we have rich land soils, water & sun all year long, no harsly freeze cold long winter snow, long coast beach, jungles,etc.. it mean very EASY TO GROWING VEGGIES & FOODS, VERY EASY TO SUITABLE FOR AGRICULTURE. But maybe Gorvement is corrupt & not teach farmers well so they’re can’t productive more. This is so sad & so bad, it’s so wasteful. Hope their Gorvement help running NATION PROJECT FARMERS EDUCATION - support them seeds & others stuff to growing rice & veggies. Teach famers how to growing more type of veggies, etc..

Dear OTR Food & History, I recently stumbled upon your video about Khlong Toei slum and I must say, it was an eye-opener for me. Despite living in Bangkok for 18 years, I have never visited this area before. I have always heard rumors and negative stereotypes about the community, which made me hesitant to visit. However, your video shattered those misconceptions and gave me a new perspective on the lives of the people living in the area. Thank you for creating such an informative and touching video. Your portrayal of the community and their daily struggles was very moving. I appreciate the effort you put into showcasing the humanity and resilience of the residents, rather than perpetuating the negative stereotypes that are often associated with the area. After watching your video, I am now determined to visit Khlong Toei and see the community for myself. I want to learn more about the people who call this place home, their stories, and the challenges they face on a daily basis. I am confident that this experience will be life-changing, and I am grateful to you for inspiring me to take this step. Once again, thank you for creating such a meaningful video. Your work has made a real impact on me, and I look forward to watching more of your content in the future. Sincerely, Robert

This was a terrific show. I've never been interested in Thailand, and aren't still, but this place is marvelous. So many amazing places in cities get torn down for "progress" and then generations later we weep for their loss. Storyville, Five Points, pre-Hausmann Paris, wooden Irkutsk and more: all irretrievably gone. Thank you for saving a little of Klong Toei.

Thank you! A big part of our goal with this channel is to tell human stories- whether anyone has been to/cares about Thailand is, I hope, irrelevant. It's just stories about people (and as we've said a lot, the story of food is the story of people). Re: your comment- I'm sure we could make a depressingly long list. Having moved to Thailand from China, I've seen my own irreplaceable neighborhoods demolished without a second thought, like when Beijing took a wrecking ball to most of the 800-year-old hutongs. I became interested in Khlong Toei when it seemed to parallel the old Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. The list goes on.

Been there way back in the day (late '60s), and I really enjoyed this chapter in your search for some of the best food on the planet. Thanks to your video we visited the Klong Thoei and it was a very cool experience. First we went to the market and then went to the Poo cooling school with the Tuktuk, because we wanted to find Chef Gaa. Unfortunately we couldn't find him and try one of the best Moo Krobs. Even though I speak quite good Thai and asked a lot of people. Maybe for the next time, hopefully next year, where to we find Chef Gaa? Since we both been there with two quite expensive cameras, we weren't very sure about the little alleyways. We also wanted to be on the safe side. But we met great people and hope that Klong Thoei will remain Klong Thoei for a long time.

Yes!! Even most videos about Khlong Toei "slum" are actually just the alleys around the market or behind Rama IV. This 70 Rai area is so different. Honestly I never even knew how to find it until we started planning to film.
@fn2577
@fn2577 Жыл бұрын
Actually 70 rai is just 1 of the many communities of Khlong Toey. 70 rai is the square area where most of the video was made. At this side of (south of) the railway there is lock 4-5-6 before 70 rai, lock 1-2-3 left of lock 4-5-6. Than more left there is "the bend" community (ชุมชนหัวโค้ง), the several "flat" communities, etc...

it's more developed now than it used to be some 30 odd years ago. i remember as a young boy going there with my mum visiting her friends, spending a night there now and again. the smell of the sewage running under all those shacks is still vivid in my mind, from the moment you entered the slum. your nose quickly adjusted to it though, you just don't notice it after a few minures.

Thank you for this. As a long time sometimes traveler in SEA (first of many trips to BKK in 1984) I knew nothing about this neighborhood. It's good to see it preserved online as it is likely to disappear like so much of earlier left has been bulldozed away.

Yeah- we originally went there to film a video about the food in the neighborhood, but the more we learned about the place the more we felt like this was something we wanted to try to make a record of (that's not just like a "hey, I'm in a slum" video like most of what we could find online)...Really glad you enjoyed it.

@@ProjectBangkok Yeah I have a special disgust for "poverty porn" videos where people walk into a neighborhood like Khlong Toei to be like "look at me, I'm IN A SLUM" and then just making it look like they're Marco Polo doing something wild and courageous...it's super problematic, and sadly that's pretty much all (not ALL- but most) of the YT content about Khlong Toei. Most of the videos about Khlong Toei don't even get the neighborhood right, and actually just film along the few run-down alleys near the market along Kasem Rat Road, which isn't even the right Khlong Toei slum. Lazy, arrogant, and really unfair to the people who actually live there. Have fun tomorrow and let me know if I can be of any assistance. I'm not 100% sure you'll find the Num Pang- she was there two of the three days we filmed, so it seems it's not an everyday thing. But no matter what, you'll find some awesome stuff and meet some good people.

@@OTRontheroad I done an awful video about 1 year ago and called it ''Dont judge a book by its cover'' might have gotten a little drunk with the locals down there on the train track haha was one of my best nights in Bangkok. Do you know how I might find the man who preps the crispy pork for 4 hours? It looked amazing.. Im sure either way I'll find some amazing food and interesting things to look at. Im torn if I should use the word slum or not.. I only said the word community in my last video because I didn't want to disrespect anybody after meeting them

@@ProjectBangkok I actually enjoyed the train track video! Watched it when we were preparing for our Khlong Toei shoot but it wasn't filmed in the same area. It wasn't like a groundbreaking piece of investigative journalism but it was a really cool example of how chill and welcoming people are in this part of the world- no matter where the lived. And that hand-pulled cart along the train track was pretty interesting. If you open the first (pinned) comment at the top here, I've listed the Google Maps location for a few of the spots we visited. I was there last night, my girlfriend lives inside the "Continent" lol. Living in Bangkok for about a decade I have been there many times over the years and never encountered anything but smiling faces and friendly people. I think it has come a long way, I certainly would not call it a high rent area but I've never felt unsafe there. The food I've eaten there has been consistently amazing which seems to be the case in pretty much all of these old school local neighborhoods in Bangkok. Interesting watch.

Having lived in Thailand for 7 years from 2000 to 2007 I spent quite a bit of time in Bangkok. I think the first time I went to Klong Toei was at night with a friend of mines son who was visiting one summer. He met a girl on Sukumvit and she took us the Klong Toei to buy some weed. This was before it was legal in Thailand 555. I was aware of the reputation but never really felt threatened anywhere in Thailand as long as you behaved yourself and didn't act stupid. I managed to learn Thai language prettywell and I'm sure this helped. I remember walking down those alleys and crossing small canals on rickety boards. Being with a local was probably why we didnt have any problem. The second time I went there was years later a friend had a girlfriend he met and she wanted to go to a beauty school that was in Klong Toei , part of the rebirth. I went in daytime and paid the money for the school for him. It was sort of a scam because the lady asked the girl in Thai how much was she supposed to say the school cost. I do remember we had a hard time trying to find a taxi to pick us up on the main road that borders Kling Toei. You didn't see many foreigners back there at that time. I went once with my Thai wife to the market to buy some Betel Nut for her mother who was visiting us at our hotel in Bangkok. I really don't think Thais perceive foreigners as a threat unless you're deliberately trying to provoke them. I regret now that I didn't spend more time exploring the Klong Toei area , but then you could spend a lifetime exploring all of the area in and around Bangkok
