I love how the scene of Gamagoori falling off of the building works from a story standpoint as well. Running in the halls is against the rules, so he chooses to jump out of the window knowing that A. It's technically not against the rules, and B. He'd get there faster.

Note, also, the symbolic relationship between Gamigori and Satsuki, in the context of light and shadow. Gamigori's presence, when he isn't onscreen, dominates through the use of shadow, and he is frequently see shadowed, creating his menacing silhouette. But all shadows exist because of the light cast behind their objects. Because Gamigori's shadow exists because of the light cast by Satsuki shining on his back, it symbolically paints him, in the end, as being her instrument. Even his own shadowy presence is subordinate to the overwhelming brightness radiated by the master of the academy.

I only had to see half an episode of this before I smiled and went "yep. This show is fucking awesome." And it has continued to be an absolute joy to watch so far. From the giant kanji that appear whenever someone is introduced or does a big attack, to the way shots are blocked out to maximize drama or comedy, to how every flashback is delivered in a 4:3 aspect ratio with an "old anime" artstyle, this show never disappoints with its visuals. And its script is surprisingly clever as well. Thanks for recommending it.

Yeah the directing and shot composition in Kill la Kill is among the best. I just re-watched the show after having watched it as it aired 7 years ago and my GOD it's still one of the most visually inventive stunning shows even after all this time. Imaishi really did an awesome job, it isn't often when a show is consistently dynamic, highly entertaining, and inventive from just a visual standpoint, ESPECIALLY for a 2-cour show. Even the episodes with less sakuga moments were storyboarded so well that they keep the momentum running high throughout the episodes.

To me, Kill la Kill is like a Van Gogh. Van Gogh's work is not a 1 to 1 replica of what he was looking at, but that's the point. A photograph of a night sky is accurate, but in Starry Night you can feel the wind blow, the trees shake, the stars twinkle, the houses slumber, and the moon slice through the sky. With the story Kill la Kill tells making everything smooth for realism would make it serious and dramatic, and that would make some of the suspension of disbelief moments harder to hold.

7:44 Nice. That's a comic book/manga technique, where you play with the time it takes to jump from one frame to the next. You don't see it but your mind implies and fills in the action regardless, except in animation you get the benefit of sound to push the grab home. Subscribed.

A very fascinating take on the opening scene of ‘Kill La Kill’. This makes me genuinely rethink about proper setup and structuring of a scene. Particularly in regards to animation, obviously. I’ll take this into account when I’m working on screenwriting.

God I love this series, and this is a good break down. I was waiting for you to get to Satsuki's introduction though, as she is one of my all time favorite anime characters. The way she is lit and framed really does make her command the screen most of the time, even when she isn't fully in control. Something I love about her light is most generally it's used to display a white light or a pure one, while Ragyo's light is rainbowed or fractured, signifying the difference in their characters immediately.

i know they technically arent villains, but i feel like this scene is the best villain introduction ive ever seen. to see Gamagoori, whose entire design and voice conveys power and intimidation, do this jaw dropping beatdown and then see him bow to Satsuki is so chilling because what kind of uber powerful being could possibly be Gamagoori's master? and then the shot pans up and her light fills the entire screen and she gives that fear is freedom speech in that awe-inspiring power pose and you immediately understand that yeah, if this character is THAT powerful using just her voice and her presence, she might as well be God. as much as i love Satsuki's redemption and development throughout the series, her villainous role was so perfect and will always have a place in my heart.
