Күн бұрын

Narayan Murthy's recent advocacy for a 70-hour work week sparked a heated internet debate, with diverse perspectives emerging.
While founders and business leaders supported Murthy's stance of emphasising hard work, employees and workers expressed concerns about burnout, underpaid salaries and work-life balance.
This video explores the various viewpoints on the issue, delving into the real question at the heart of the debate: what are the implications of extended work hours, and is there a middle ground that ensures both productivity and well-being?
Here's the Full Disclosure!

I worked at TCS and after 1 year of working diligently, I got to understand the scenario. So ultimately you go "oh you want 9 meetings a week, and 3 more meetings for teaching juniors what i know? suuuure ill do the fucking meetings. to hell with your work. getting paid for attending meetings and saying minimal is not bad", and i stopped going to office and started wfh. i was too valuable to let go, so they only gave warnings. now its been 2 more years and I left the company a few days ago. good riddance. no one wants to work, and everyone only pushes tasks to others saying there's a dependency, so i started to do the same. but now im happy after leaving. very toxic.

People working 70 hours isn't going to develop the nation. The average person earning more money is. People earn more money, then they are able to spend the money instead of just saving it, which is good for business and inturn creates more jobs. Apparently Narayana Murthy somehow doesn't understand this despite being a businessman.

A 70-hour work week, when examined closely, appears to be not just unreasonable but also detrimental to both the individual and society. Here's why: 1. Time Deprivation: The Unbalanced Life: Out of 168 hours in a week, an average Indian would spend 72.6 hours on essential activities like sleep, eating, bathing, dressing, and commuting. Subtracting 70 hours for work leaves only 25.4 hours for everything else. These 25.4 hours must cover all personal time, family responsibilities, leisure, errands, and any unforeseen events. This translates to just 3.6 hours per day. Is that sufficient to lead a balanced and fulfilling life? The answer is clearly no. 2. Health Implications: A Recipe for Burnout: Sleep: The average person requires about 7-8 hours of sleep per night for optimal health. A 70-hour work week often leads to sleep deprivation as individuals try to squeeze more time out of their day, which can result in chronic fatigue, stress, and long-term health problems. Physical and Mental Health: The lack of time for exercise, relaxation, hobbies, and social connections can severely affect both physical and mental well-being. Over time, this imbalance increases the risk of burnout, depression, and anxiety. 3. Family and Social Life: Erosion of Relationships: With only 3.6 hours per day remaining, meaningful interactions with family and friends become limited. This not only strains personal relationships but can also lead to feelings of isolation and dissatisfaction. The erosion of family time is particularly concerning in cultures where family ties are central to emotional support and well-being. 4. Productivity vs. Overwork: Diminishing Returns: Numerous studies show that beyond a certain point, increased working hours do not equate to higher productivity. Instead, they lead to errors, inefficiency, and poor decision-making. A 70-hour work week often results in diminishing returns, where the extra hours contribute little to no additional value but come at a high personal cost. 5. Fair Compensation: Hourly Pay is a Must: Given the significant sacrifice of personal time, the expectation that employees should work 70 hours a week should be met with appropriate compensation. An hourly wage ensures that workers are fairly compensated for every additional hour worked, acknowledging the personal costs involved. Hourly pay would also discourage excessive demands on employees' time by employers, leading to a healthier work-life balance and more sustainable work practices. 6. Long-Term Societal Impact: An Unsustainable Model: Widespread adoption of a 70-hour work week could have broader societal implications, including increased healthcare costs due to stress-related illnesses, reduced overall happiness, and a workforce that is less engaged and more prone to burnout. A society where people are perpetually overworked is not one that can sustain creativity, innovation, or long-term economic growth. Conclusion: A 70-hour work week is not only impractical but also harmful. It imposes undue strain on individuals, families, and society. If such a demanding schedule is required, it is only fair that workers be compensated on an hourly basis, reflecting the true cost of their time and energy. This ensures that employees are not exploited and that their well-being is prioritized, leading to a more balanced, productive, and ultimately more prosperous society.

Imho, Mr. Moorthy should first advice infosys management to increase salaries based on inflationary numbers also and not only on merit. That way, before bringing 70 hrs work week, ensure that his workers are paid enough to have a decent livelihood in cities like mysore, bangalore, pune, kochi etc. If a worker has to work even 60 hrs a week, then he/she has to be paid twice the existing salary, that is extra 20 hrs shall be paid at an overtime rate of 2x.

Simple observation, people go to USA, Canada, Dubai to work as Uber driver or a truck driver because they are paid better for that level of skill. But see the condition of drivers here in India. I guess same happens with highly skilled worker like engineers. The one who can pay will do everything to get the most by paying the least. There is no reward or incentive for blue collar job. The companies will find all the loop holes available to pay the least to these workers. It is better to not talk about the government sector work productivity.

Let's do simple math. Work Days : 6 days out of 7 days a week Work Hour: Maybe 7AM to 5 PM People are working 5 days a week maybe for now and 9AM to 5PM as standard time. So, 6 days out of 7 days a week might sound something but be on work at 7AM. Like one gets off from work at 5PM, reach home maybe at 7PM, cook food at eat it at 9PM and go to bed maybe 11PM and again wakeup at 5AM now again cook food or have stored food warmed up. Now, how TF can he be on work at 7AM while he just woke up at 5AM. If you have 5 days work a week then it would be 14 hours a day of work. Even if person is residing inside office with cooking, laundering and even machine bathing you this work hour is absurd.

Adding another point - Globalization. Even if most youth in india were indeed working in the informal sector, survival would not be a problem, were it not for the outsourcing of services to first world nations, which leads to hyper rich middle and elite class in metro cities you mentioned, working in MNCs leading to inflated rates of housing, entertainment etc. The only caveat would be that we would be living without iphones and modern tech products born elsewhere. The solution is to produce everything here, with the local economy, so that even a low salary by global standards is affordable.

I don't agree with the argument that pay more and we will work 70 hour week. People need to live a life. You can't just buy them and expect them to devote their entire life to work. Even if employers agree to pay for 70 hours week, I strongly think employees should reject it. We should focus on improving our problem solving skills so that we can achieve more output in 45 hours week rather than agreeing to work for more hours.

I think they have not said it in this way that you should reduce the 70 hours in the company, that means you should work in your office for 9 hours, after that you should do the time that is left for yourself, the generation should do it with their work. You should do it for yourself and as far as the office is concerned, if there is a big company with thousands of employees then do it for yourself and the rest of the time, do something for yourself and if there is a startup where there are only a few, here only two or three. Or there are only four people there, if you are getting a chance to work then you can give your time back there because it will give you good returns in future because if you work with the owners there. If you tell me how you are doing and if you send your time, then in future you can get good returns there, although there are some people who do not give, then you give at least 2 years of work there, I think this is the only thing. When you work, do something for yourself along with your job in the rest of your time. Btw - Editor ne kya edit kua h🔥 i think Martin Or research op🔥

sorry wait a min...we are working 70 hrs a week with unpaid overtime included in it(for some like myself it was 84 hrs a week with 14hrs a day, 6 days a week). The issue here is we are clave workers. Why productivity being discussed here instead of our human rights?. And how is that old guy even allowed to walk out of that interview after saying such a hubris statement?. GDP is low because we are paid in clave wage...population isn't the only factor here, lack of gvt that could stand with labor is a major issue. A economy could only grow when common people who make up 90% of population in any society spend more in their market. And they can only spend more when they are paid right and not being over taxed. Recent report says income and indirect tax revenue exceeded corporate tax revenue individually. Our country is without a doubt is a corporatocracy.

When anyone keeps barking about GDP, please don't forget that more than 50% of our population does not contribute anything meaningful to the economy, but are a burden upon our economy. So cut out those people, and then recalculate the GDP. By the way, any other developed country or developing country per capita is naturally higher since their population is lesser, and majority of the people are contributing to the economy

Why do Indian youth want a job in the first place (at any cost)? I believe you should do the job only these 2 scenarios 1. To start a business (collecting some funds) OR 2. You've already tried the business and failed (you may want peace in life or money to start a new business) Job (joining other's business) is practiced only in western world (compare their perks), we must need to understand that in India it is nothing but a modern day slavery. People are trolling bjp for pakoda business but in reality (even in my personal experience) reality is far different 1. Tea stall earns 50-60k profit per month 2. Pan shop makes 100k profit per month 3. Wada pav stall owner in my area recently purchased punch car and a 2 bhk flat (not sure about his income)

He is taking example of japan...everyone of us know what working for hours did to the Japanese society. None of the younger generation wants to marry and have children, they live alone die alone , depression is on another level. These countries don't have enough population to run the country. How can it be taken as a good example. He is rich, he doesn't have to take care of the family needs, they have hundreds of workers for their everyday chores but not us common people have that advantage. Both husband and wife think they are great but may be in reality they aren't.

He said to work for 70 hrs. Did he mention if we have to work for the company only? And if you take breaks between work, does that time count? Or is it that the time just being available for work in the office is considered?

They don't bother about getting their employees properly trained and building skills, they don't want to increase your salary. But they want you to work like a donkey for hours. That's our Indian tradition. Yes, our youth can work for hours. I don't say no. Some of them might be willing but if you increase their skills and pay. Man, you want to increase the performance of your Car but fail to get a highly powerful engine and some better fuel. That's pathetic you know Changing your car's looks or other parts won't work Hell no you old man... Those old days are over Don't even try to fool today's young generation. Yes, they are lazy. But trust me they know why you all firing them at all times, they know what they are getting in return for working more hours. Indian working hours are becoming ridiculously high and salary going down like pathetic after the Covid crisis. In turn we get inflation left and right, even when we are asleep. That's heart breaking. They are making you look like a criminal even if you give your best. So,our youth too are ready to give up your job if you cross the break even, the limits. The already changing climate and unhealthy working environment are posing yet such great challenges but even then you cry for more working hours so you can make more income but fail to share some of it. Nah nah nah baba nah nah Stay right there... Dont cross your limits😂
