I don't mind people saying wrestling's fake. But the thing that bothered me especially as a kid was how smug some people got. Like they're coming down from on high to deliver this grand message to the unwashed masses. And we're just like "Uh huh ..you figured it out you whip-smart detective you.. Randy Orton didn't actually try to murder a 7 foot tall undead wizard on live tv. Good job buddy you cracked the code."

Actually this documentary was shown to us in the late 90s during 6th grade. I didn't know anything about 'babyface' or 'heel' or any of the stuff they revealed, and it was very eye opening. It did have a very negative, snarky presentation though, as if pro wrestling is some giant conspiracy and we're all getting screwed in the process. Most of the kids were like "yeah okay, I'm still watching WWF and WCW tonight!". They tried to bury pro wrestling, but they just came across as assholes who wanted to make fans feel bad for watching it.

Wrestling With Wregret Our teachers were trying to prove a point that 'wrestling is fake' or something like that. They were adults who looked down on WWF and WCW, despite the product being red hot at the time. They even banned the NWO shirt "Broken Bones Rule" because it "promoted violence". I guess those baby boomers didn't approve of the sexual and overtly offensive language, but all the kids loved it!

Soltane Najat This was made for TV by NBC and not connected to WWF or WCW. Even WWF criticized it at the time: The World Wrestling Federation issued a statement about the special shortly before it aired, stating that "NBC has hired a bunch of bitter, masked wannabe 'pro wrestlers' that couldn't make the cut." and that the real secret to professional wrestling was that "All of the WWF Superstars sacrifice their body and soul to entertain the fans." My initial impression was that they were trying to expose wrestling secrets, but only because WWF & WCW were very popular and NBC wanted to cash in on the high ratings. As wrestling fans, we were all generally intrigued by anything wrestling-related at the time. So when you're flipping through channels, you see the title "Exposed! Wrestling's Greatest Secrets", we all watched it because of the title (sort of like how kids today would click on an interesting video title on KZbin like "Top 10 Worst Mass Shootings").

I always use the analogy of kung-fu movies, which I also love, because there are similarly moves that can ONLY be pulled off if the “opponents” are co-operating. It’s not like a real fight, it’s a heightened reality, like wrestling, but nobody feels the need to tell me Jackie Chan movies are “fake” as though they are telling me something I don’t know.

Funny thing is, I liked watching the Masked Magician. As for wrestling, I think the art of how they put the show on, and the athleticism and precision required actually appeals to me more - not that I wasn't aware before this. The word "fake" is still insulting to those in the business and us fans - ask Darren Drozdov if it's "fake".

The reason the Masked Magician’s show worked on all cylinders is because magicians take great pains to keep up the illusion that their tricks are real and not illusions. Therefore, there’s a lot of interest in seeing what goes into said illusions revealed. The same cannot be said for pro wrestling since the ’80s, and especially the ’90s, WHEN THIS SHOW WAS AIRED. There are some interesting things revealed in the special if you don’t know exactly how those things work, I suppose (though an actual wrestling fan not knowing them is quite absurd), but that’s kind of offset by the narration’s condescending tone and the factual inaccuracies, the majority of which most non-wrestling fans don’t have the foresight to pick out from the factual parts. (If you’re making a documentary, it’s not acceptable to mix in facts with fiction, because the audience you’re aiming for isn’t likely to know which is which.)

The narration was not for wrestling fans. Just the opposite. The show was for the 90% of the population who do NOT watch wrestling, so that they can laugh at how "stupid" it is, and laugh at wrestling fans. In another video, Ole Anderson makes a point that Harley Race is NOT a wrestler. Now I have some idea where that comes from.
@Thor-Orion
@Thor-Orion 4 жыл бұрын
Wait why would Ole say Harley isn’t a wrestler? He took a paycheck and fed them bad information. Haha. And at the time Nitro and Raw were the two highest rated shows on television, Raw outdrew Monday Night Football in the 18-34 year old men demographic at it’s peak.

Wrestling With Wregret I've been watching your videos for a few year now and I hope that you get the credit you deserve. born in 77' I'm a huge 80's wrestling mark!! Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff was my favorite wrestler as he ran the strongest program with Hulkamania himself in (1986). Great unexplained tidbit was how Orndorff was left off the WM 3 card entirely! Some suggest he was the unofficial "backup" plan for Andre if he couldn't perform!? I understand Vince's thought process that he had to strike while the iron was hot and didn't hurt that it was hosted inside the Detroit Silverdome breaking the indoor attendance record. The Saturday Night Main Event with Orndorff vs Hogan in the blue steel cage ending with the split screen instant replay was ahead of its time and truly an epic event embedded in my brain forever!! Randy Macho Man Savage shortly took over the reign of my all time favorite of all time! Funny how even as a 10 year old I was routing against the face Hogan and Bobby Heenan was my favorite all around talent in the northeast territory Boston MA WWF. Keep up the great work Zane! I watch you and Lamia religiously!

I was 10 when my grandpa and I saw this air. I heard so many rumors at that time and age that it was nice having the show at least confirm a few of them. It was great. my grandpa said nothing but, "Told ya", for an hour. I watched it before this and it is hilarious. Great piece of wrestling memorostalgia. Also, look at an old WCW show and tell me they didnt hand out SOME of the signs...especially for the nobodies with no heat.

I read in mick foley's Have a Nice Day, that standing and running in wwf wrestling rings at that time felt uncomfortable since the ring felt as if it were tilting from side to side, especially during the royal rumble.

I will say, this special was how I found out how in ring things were done, like wrestlers telling each other what move they're about to take and blading. I had yet to get internet at the time, so I didn't know those small secrets until this special. That said, I knew someone was booking the event. Any fan does.

+Wrestling With Wregret IMDB says Modest was the All - American Boy,not Private Pain,also shows original ECW Pitbulls as Colossus (Anthony Durante/#2) & Brute Force (#1/Gary Wolfe). And I'll 100% guarantee that Brash Knuckles was Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake,hell,if you listen to the "Promo" segment you can hear his unscrambled voice for a few moments,lol. Haven't a clue as whom the other talent were,would be curious to know who dared to break "kayfabe" in this laughable documentary as you so brilliantly and eloquently verbally eviscerated for the sham it was. good stuff.
@WrestlingWithWregret
@WrestlingWithWregret 9 жыл бұрын
+Don Willhite,Jr IMDB is incorrect about Modest, he was definitely Private Pain. Look at the body types of Modest and Pain and you will see they are the same person. As for Brash Knuckles, Modest explains in the interview I did with him that the guy was the person who organized most of the documentary and worked with the producers. Modest doesn't remember who he was, but I'm pretty sure he would have remembered if it were Beefcake. Plus, the guy looks nothing like Beefcake to begin with.

Oh man, I remember this special though I was so young at the time that I didn't remember what it's called until now, surprisingly. I always thought that this was Beyond the Mat but then I watched that and it wasn't it. It's kind of funny rewatching this now though because when I first watched it, it was because somebody I knew was trying to 'prove a point' to me that wrestling is fake. I was a kid back then, and though I didn't know what kayfabe was, I did know at least that it was staged, though I also knew that "The hazards are real", as the 'Don't try this at home' video package always said. This also reminds me of another remark frequently made by the 'Wrestling is fake' crowd, namely the "why isn't he banged up or dead even though he's being punched/suplexed a lot? It's fake!" To which I said, "just because you're a pussy doesn't mean that it's fake!" It's one thing to question the staged nature, but challenging whether the bumps were real was just stupid. Once I learned what kayfabe was, I found out that I was right all along!
