Im about half an hour in, but I would like to add that I'm 17 and my brother is 15 His guys were Cena and Roman I loved Dean, Orton & Bray Wyatt As much as I agree they aren't great looking back, I will always think back to the Cena / Orton (almost) forever feud being the defining wrestling of our childhoods Fun coda is that when we had our wrestling promotion in our mates trampoline, my brothers first character was Tom Cena, the nephew of John, and my first gimmick was "Poison", a cross between Orton and the Joker 😂

NXT got good the moment Bo Dallas was setting up to fight Big E for the title. That's when the crowd started being more impactful (really hating on Bo) and when we first starting thinking "The people who are champs here will be major players in the main roster". After that Wyatts/Sami/Others came in and the ball started rolling

John Oliver had this cool sidebar when he was filling in as host of The Daily Show where he showed a clip of the Real Americans on Raw with Michael Cole succinctly calling out the hypocrisy of an anti-immigration stance in American in a 5 second sound bite, and then it flashes back to him and he's absolutely joyous, going "What is this beautiful thing that can give more insightful political commentary in 5 seconds than cable news can do in hours while I get to watch two people employing the most interesting looking fighting style I've ever seen?!" Massive paraphrasing from a faulty memory I'm sure (I saw it one time 10 years ago), but I remember loving that.

28:10 As someone who started watching wwe as a kid in the 'big dog' era I genuinely loved (and still love) roman reigns. Ofcourse my perception of that time is skewed due to nostalgia but I definitely enjoyed it and hes was my number one guy. I remember just getting into wrestling youtube and whatculture at the time and never understanding why roman was hated so much. Obviously looking back I can separate my bias and understand. But I think a lot of people my age still get blinded by their nostalgia which is a shame because it just leads to dishonest wrestling conversations.

It's a bit disingenuous to compare viewership stats from a decade ago, US cable subscriptions have dropped between 35 and 40 percent since 2014, and if memory serves me correctly a good chunk of those lost subscribers are people that watch scripted content, so NBA games would have a much lower viewership drop off.

So one thing that's worth remembering is that originally Batista's return was supposed to be a surprise until the Rumble match itself. But it was leaked to the entertainment press (because Dave was coming off the success of Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and had finished filming for the latest Bond movie at the time, Spectre, so he was a movie star well on the rise, meaning the general entertainment press had an interest in what he was doing), and WWE had him return a few RAW's before the Rumble as a result. Would his win of potentially gone down better with wrestling fans had his return been a complete surprise. Had no one of known about his return, would people the night of at least cheered it, instead of raining it down with boo's. In the long term it was still the wrong call because no one would of wanted to see Orton-Batista at Mania, and fans would of turned on it in the months that followed, but on the night would fans of reacted as negatively to it?
@DR.64A92 ай бұрын
I always wonder this too. I don't think Dave gets booed if it's a complete surprise. But eventually the crowd would turn on him.
@MerpTime2 ай бұрын
Guardians came out August 2014, the 2014 Royal Rumble was January 2014 so Dave wasnt a big mega star yet when he made his wrestling return. He left June 2014 to do press for Guardians shortly after tapping out to Bryan at WM30 and putting the shield over (blueTista).

You're absolutely right about the revisionist history being rewritten about Cena. He absolutely failed getting over as a babyface. He was booed as early as 2005 against Christian. He was booed solidly for a decade. The only difference between Luger and Cena is that despite both failing as both faces, Vince kept pushing Cena regardless. It reminds me now of all the young Star Wars fans who grew up with the awful prequels, but claim they were good out of nostalgia.

I was a Roman reigns kid (19 now), I vividly remember all the boos and never knew why until about like 2018 when my brain developed a bit and I realized oh I can cheer for people that actually put on good matches and that I find interesting rather than cheer them because they a face and boo them because their a heel. But yeah I always supported roman no matter what, even though I knew why people booed him and all of his creative faults I just could not bring myself to boo the man, payed off well with the tribal chief I must say 😂

Legitimate question based on the revenue question....why do ye (and i suppose other wrestling channels) focus exclusively on AEW or WWE with sporadic mentions of the other major promotions ?
@Rexel4th2 ай бұрын
They focus their limited time on making content which would appeal to the largest possible number of people, which is WWE and, to a lesser extent, AEW. The smaller promotions don't attract enough interest to make back the cost of the videos.
