Removing dealerships from the equation isn't a good move altogether. Yes they're playing stupid games with exclusive models, but what they provide is market competition. Even back when Ford was doing the same thing with the next-gen Raptors and GT350's, you could still find some dealers nationwide that would sell to you at ACTUAL MSRP. If you suddenly get rid of dealerships, you get rid of a MASSIVE amount of competetive dealerships, and then you'll just have to pay what Ford or Chevy TELLS YOU to pay! As of 2020, there were 16,676 competetive Chevy dealerships in the US. If you dwindle that down to just the manufacturer, and If you understand "supply vs demand" at all, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that's bad for customers!
@jrfairclough42912 жыл бұрын
Ok, so lets say GM gets rid of dealerships. Now who's going to do warranty work on your $140,000 car? I'm not saying what some dealerships are doing is right, but dealerships still serve a need. These markups are literally going to be the end of the road for dealers. Manufacturers aren't going to let dealers keep padding their profits with bogus mark ups. I can see the manufacturers buying out dealerships, downsizing them and making them Factory service stations. It's going to be a direct to consumer issue, with vehicles being kept at large distribution centers, buyers being able to choose what vehicle they want, vehicle being shipped to service center for pre-delivery inspection and OEM add-ons. No new inventory on dealer lots except for used vehicles. Dealers are literally putting themselves out of work with these practices. It's only a matter of time.

I agree with you Mike, it's pure greed on the part of the dealerships. With the slowdowns associated with the pandemic, I can understand dealerships wanting more money for each individual car. The dealerships around me, not just Chevy but Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Dodge, etc, have all had mostly empty car lots for more than a year now so it's understandable that the dealers need to make more per car since they don't have as many cars to sell. But a ~70% markup, just because they can? That's not right. Personally, I think it's high time for the dealership framework as we know it to go away. Think what you will about Tesla (quality/not quality, over priced/not over priced), they've at least proven that we no longer need a dealership framework to sell cars. That's an idea rooted in the great depression of the '30s and rarely serves a good purpose for the consumer today.

Dealerships have enough hidden fees without adding a huge 90k extra to a 150k vehicle. F that noise. Put the Stealership on Blast, and embarrass the shit out of them, and maybe it will stop other Stealerships from trying the same shit. I'd honestly love to see these price gauging bastards go bankrupt. Sure would make for great content. "I Bankrupted a Stealership" Has a good ring to it.

I agree with you Mike. Dealers should not be able to charge a premium to that extreme. I believe GMC and dealers should have an agreed upon dealer fee so that dealers are compensated fairly and prevent gouging. Of course, free market principles would call for competition to weed out those who would take advantage of the consumer. Maybe GMC would consider a direct order/purchase?

The head of Ford was recently interviewed and spoke on the same subject of unfair/excessive Dealer pricing. He talked about changing the Dealer franchise agreements to prevent/minimize this issue moving forward. He also mentioned there was nothing that would prevent Ford from delaying delivery to Dealer that have excessive mark-ups. I don't know much about the franchise agreements but if Ford could rework agreements moving forward and delay deliveries to the not so good Dealers then the problem would correct over time.

My friend who works for a Chevy dealer made a good point. It’s wrong if the dealer does it but many consumers order them and try to do the same thing to make money. GM needs to crack down on resellers, maybe hold the title for a year or something.

Mike, you nailed it. GM deserves to see the money on this car if it’s really that good. Dealers do zero legwork to justify them realizing 100% profit on a car that they are purely a middle man for.

My local Nissan dealer is charging $1,000(non refundable) to be put on a wait list for allocations they don't have yet for the Z, and the market adjustment will be between $10,000 and $20,000 depending on options. For a $50,000 car.

The law of supply and demand. No one is pointing a gun at anyone's head saying you must buy it. And to be honest, if no one bought it, the price would come down really quick. Blame the people who buy at those prices, as P.T. Barnum said, there is one born every minute.

Hey Mike. Love your content. I’m an old guy so I will tell you that 90k over MSRP is absolutely outrageous. In fact, I think anything over MSRP is ridiculous. I understand we live in a capitalist society. I’m all for making the cash. But c’mon. They took a car that was affordable for a lot of us out there and pushed into nothing more than a dream now. I think you summed it up the best I’ve ever heard. The dealers not the manufacturer are charging the 90-100k over MSRP. And the dealers do absolutely nothing but take your money and place your order. If GM said, hey this is the price which by the way, they did, it’s called MSRP. Then I get it. This is no different then when a gas station gouges you at the pump. Unfortunately, as long as these cars are selling GM will probably do nothing. Even their warranty voiding plan probably won’t work. Guess I’ll be driving my C7 for a while to come. Part of the problem is to many are willing to pay over MSRP.

I'm #6 on the list for my ZO6 at a smaller nearby dealer that required a $5000 non refundable deposit for deal at MSRP. Even though I'm #6 on the list, they're saying it will be a 2024 model that won't come in until next year at the earliest. I might consider 10 k over on this edition ZO6 but I'm really against the idea. A dealer tried to charge 10 k over on my 2015 Challenger Hellcat that was in stock on the showroom floor but then agreed to sell it at MSRP. I recently tried to buy a used TRX with 2,000 miles and they wanted 25 k over original msrp (NO WAY!). I found a nearby dealer to order a TRX at msrp but it was ordered in May and I have no idea when I'll take delivery.

Mike these dealerships that are jacking the price up $90K for a new Z06 need to be reported to GM headquarters. Ford dealerships tried that with the new Ford GT and they put a stop to it. I don't see why GM wouldn't do the same. At the most a dealerships should charge on a new Z06 is $12-15K. That's plenty of mark up on a car that cost $150K at the most.

Dealers served a purpose when they were dealers that represented the manufacturers but now they represent GREED. I agree with you Mike, the dealers have done nothing whatsoever to deserve nearly doubling the price of a car; no engineering nor manufacturing. so if the vehicle is going to be priced higher, the manufacture should see it not a useless middleman. Maybe it is time to lose the dealers all together and only have them be test drive & repair centers.

Just a little food for thought. I work at a dealership and feed my family and keep a roof over my head with what I earn. My dealership normally keeps 350 to 400 cars on the lot. We have 14 today, total, 14 cars to feed over 100 people and keep them compensated, this is why there are dealer mark ups. The overhead at the dealership hasn’t changed only the amount of cars available to sell.

Here in the Netherlands dealers make next to none profit on a car. They have to earn on quantity by getting a bonus for a certain amount of sales. Now with exclusive cars that’s going to be hard, so I guess this could be a way to make a profit. But 90K is ridiculous, almost 100% of the MSRP. Furthermore dealers are losing ground, because they have less and less added value. A lot of them have minimal demo cars and/or don’t want to give you a car for a test drive unless you commit to buying at that dealer. The future is central warehouses where the client can order a car for a testdrive and then spec it through a website or through a teams meeting where the sales guy is in a home office assisting and arranging administrative stuff. With EV there will be not much to fix and maintain as well, so the workshops will be redundant as well.
