I went with my brother to re-new his motability car, we insisted on petrol car. The frosty reception we got was laughable and there were only two petrol options. We took it regardless of their pestering and hostility !!! I also got on my soap box and asked them if they knew about the child labour used to mine metals for the batteries, we were greeted with blank faces so I pulled it up on my phone. Well the shrugging of shoulders was audible... Disgusting.

I have just come home to Australia from Los Angeles where I stayed in a hotel overlooking a shopping mall carpark that had 25 EV chargers. They we're all labeled as fast chargers. I would get back to the hotel around 6pm most evenings and every charger would be taken except for 3 that I later found had been broken for months. There was also a line of cars waiting of about 10 cars. I went to bed about 10.30 most nights and the line of cars was always there but by bed time was around 20 to 30 cars. The last night I was there I wandered over to talk to an owner and he told me its like this all the time and at other stations in the area. They buy Ev's to save money on fuel but they live in apartments and don't have charging there and the buildings owners will not allow it. They even tried to make their tenants park their cars on the street because they did not want to pay extra insurance premiums due to fire risk but that turned out to be illegal under city regulations. These people were not wealthy people and they had borrowed money to buy the cars and now found they would take a big hit if they sold it/ The charging takes so long because the grid in the area cuts the charging rate back if the demand is to high and of course as more people get home more demand is put on the grid and the chargers get slower. So it seems that the road to electric utopia is not paved in gold and that many of the infrastructure warnings being made buy engineers were correct. Here in Australia we are seeing a surge in BEV sales because for the previous three years we got almost no supply as they were being directed to other markets. Now those markets have tanked we suddenly have good supply but with our longer distances to travel there are already tales of woe about vehicles falling short of estimated range and not being able to find a charger working on the route. Listening to you two I wonder how many cars coming to OZ might be UK cars that can't sell. We don't have the same registration method as you so our plates don't tell you the exact age of the car only the vin number can do that, Sorry for being long winded.

If the grid won't even support the handful of ev's we have now imagine if all the cars are electric. Some people said "we're fine, it would only increase load by 10% on the grid because industry uses a lot of power". Turns out there isn't enough power.

Well if I were going to spend that much money to buy a car, I would certainly think about it and consider all the practicality of it. I knew from the beginning I did not want one. For one thing I don’t have patience to wait around for it to charge. For another I have no interest in finding out where the chargers are. Cars originally made our lives easier. Not harder.

51:27 "Were you misled on your Motability claim?" Fortunately not. I ordered and cancelled a mk4 Citroen Berlingo 1.5 BlueHDI diesel on Motability. I wanted one so badly because I knew they would give me the independence to leave the house on my own. I was led to believe there was no rear bulkhead, then told there was, so my scooter wouldn't fit in the car. Neither Citroen, the dealer nor Motability would remove the bulkhead when asked. The eBerlingo has no such restriction because they want you to use your PIP to lease an EV in the first place. I don't have a drive way. So I cancelled it and bought a used Berlingo and had it converted to my needs instead. I was rather angry at the time because I thought that the Motability scheme was to help the disabled instead it is to help the manufacturers reach their EV targets. How thoroughly dispicable to use vulnerable people to meet quotas, to talk of independence only to find the range was a restiction on your mobility over a distance. A separate issue is the chargers, nearly all of them are designed for people who can stand, the weight of the charger cable is so difficult you to use, the recharging bays are littered with obstacles for wheelchair users and I wish Euan's Guide, Disabled Motoring UK magazine and any other disability organisation success in making the powers that be provide appropriate chargers for all users. I agree Geoff I can see the lawsuits coming. I attended Motability's Big Event at the NEC this year and the push for EV sales was repressive and they felt the need to re-educate (ahem) us about EVs and their benefits (for manufacurers). Scandalous.

The petrol & diesel models are registered as vans meaning that you can only do 60 mph legally on a motorway. It was such an unnecessarily complicated sales experience that I decided to give it a miss and bought a Berlingo from the Motability dealership which was easy peasy. In my case Motability was not fit for purpose. That's not to say it would not work for anyone else. If I had my time again I'd probably go for a WAV. @@DwaynePipes I have a large mobility scooter a Pride Revo 2.0. It's a heavy duty boot scooter that is recommended to take up to 26ish stone, I just don't tell it I'm 30 stone and it still works for me. It is much longer than a standard scooter and although it comes apart into pieces it has bent the power pins in the past and I've had to straighten them with pliers. Best to keep it in one piece. I use a Jeff Gosling electric hoist to lift it in the boot. When you hoist it in the Berlingo M you have to have the large back seat or left and centre seats in higher spec models, folded down to accommodate the scooter. The boot on its own with a rear bulkhead is not big enough to fit the scooter. With a WAV, (wheelchair access vehicle) you can lower the floor and drive the scooter in using a ramp. You need to secure it using the floor anchor points as you wouldn't want 90kgs of scooter to smack you in the rear if you break sharply. No need for an expensive hoist. Check out Allied Mobility, Sirus Mobility, Automtotive Group, Brook Miller, Alfred Bekker Mobility, GM Coachworks Mobility, Gowrings, Pickering Motability Co Ltd, McElmeel for example. I live in a hamlet, six miles from town. I'm retired and rarely drive more than 20 miles. I also have a driveway, so could charge at home. A small, inexpensive EV would appear to be ideal for me, even if only as a shopping trolley. But I still don't want one. I don't want to risk it burning the house down, or to find that my x-thousand pound investment is worthless because a stone flew up and damaged the battery. I have a couple of power tools which use cheap Chinese L-Ion batteries. Tools are in the house, but the batteries are kept in a shed, far from the house.

There is currently a Hyundai Kona EV advertised by Evans Halshaw in Leeds on Auto Trader. This car was registered on 30 Sep 2020 and has 34 miles on the clock. The car shows on DVLA as SORN and, despite being 4 years old, has not yet had an MoT. This is a fairly small and inoffensive car and, apparently, Hyundai/Evans Halshaw have been unable to sell it. It retailed at up to nearly £40k but this one is on sale for £16390 which suggests, if nothing else, that someone in the motor industry is taking a huge loss somewhere along the line. This cannot be sustainable. Edit: On Saturday I drove past Avonmouth docks on the M5 as I have done many times in the past and I have never in all those years seen so many cars sitting in the compounds which were almost completely full.

The industry cannot bring cheap cars to the market. They would lose their plants. And the fact is that most people are still not interested in EV's. We are heading to some huge problems for the car manufacturers. At the same they have to sell EV's which are not profitable to them (and that people don't want) and produce a lot less ICE cars which are profitable. But also let's not forget that the politicians cannot force us to buy a product we don't want. We are the one making the market and deciding on the direction!
@SteveEileenMartindale3 ай бұрын
To my mind, even if you have a home charger and can buy a cheap EV, private ownership of an EV does not add up. The costs, liabilities, risks, inconvenience and loss of travel freedom mitigate against buying one with my own money, I would drive one if I could beg, borrow or lease one but I do not want the liability of EV ownership hanging round my neck. It is early days yet but I reckon the average life of an EV will prove to be a lot less than the average life of a petrol/diesel car, in which case before long EVs will be seen a disposable consumer items.

What you guys are talking about are some of the local UK short term effects of the major disruption to car manufacturing and the motor trade that is now happening on a global basis and the pace of change is only going to accelerate. Our Government, indeed no Government can stop what is happening. It is now highly probable that one (more likely several) of big traditional car makers will go bust within the next two to three years, the companies themselves know it and their Chief Executives are now openly warning that is on the cards for them without drastic action. There are two major disruptions facing traditional car manufacturers. In no particular order. The first is with respect to EVs - traditional ICE car manufacturers simply can't make EVs at a profit. Why? Because the Chinese (and Tesla) make their own batteries (or have high volume deals with CATL and other Chinese major suppliers), the electronics, the software and a high percentage of the components - in other words they are vertically integrated in a way that the traditional ICE manufacturers simple can't compete! The second major problem for traditional ICE manufacturers is in their assembly processes, the Chinese (inspired by Tesla) have made use of Mega Casting techniques and robotised assembly lines which have drastically reduced the cost of building a car. To put things in context, the Chinese are now making almost 40% of all new cars globally (they are exporting almost 6 million a year) and the sales of traditional Western manufacturers (including the Japanese) cars in China, where they had been making the majority of their profits for years, is collapsing at an incredible speed. Within the Chinese market itself, which is 23 million new cars a year (1/3 of Global market) 53% of new cars sold are now BEVs. The US, and to a lesser extent the EU, are trying tariffs to try and arrest the rot - this will only delay the inevitable. Finally, there is an interesting situation developing in Norway which is currently about 95% EV and has banned the sale of ICE cars from 2025. In Norway the second hand value of non-EVs is now collapsing!! As we approach 2030 (which is likely to be the target date for the new Labour Government) then the second hand value of ICE cars are likely to start to collapse in the UK as well.

@@DwaynePipes There's the recent interview with the chief exec of Stellantis. The £15K fine per vehicle is utterly ludicrous, and the mess we're in is largely because for 14 years we had a government which thought everything would be sorted by "the market" if only we left "the market" to get on with it. Well, guess what - "the market" have not bothered to do anything about the charging infrastructure, and can't do anything about the fact that cars have to lug huge, heavy, expensive batteries about because charging is such a PITA. But none of that, *NONE OF IT* makes any of the stuff about EVs being mobile incendiary bombs, or part of a plot to take cars away from people, or a step on the road to "you will own nothing and be happy" (not that anybody who waves that quote around could ever explain where it came from) anything other than ludicrous swivel-eyed conspiracyfantasybabblebollocks. It does make me laugh to see all these people, so vehemently opposed to EVs, spewing out so much utter nonsense that nobody is ever, *EVER* , going to take anything they say seriously, even though there are issues with an EV environment which need to be discussed, and addressed. But Geoff Tells Lies, and his loony acolytes, have cut themselves off from ever being able to be part of that discussion.
