150000k barely just broken in 😋 my 2010 corolla has 333k and still runs the same all stock never opened engine same stock water pump stock ignition coils stock injection valve cover just started leaking a bit last year but other than that I've changed starter once alternator once recently I've changed the fuel pump assembly, the 300k miles stock one was tired but was still working. Aftermarket axles and front hubs. Ive tried some cheap coilovers but they where horrible swapped them out for kyb struts and eibach 2" lowering springs 👌🤌 rides like stocks but better 😊. But other than all that I've just kept up with oil changes and maintenance and mostly all the fluids where flushed except transmission which ive only drained once. Had the car for 10 years now been driving to and from my job over 150 miles almost every day round trip. Best car ive ever owned period. Its made me more money i dare say 60× over the purchase price of 8 grand by reliably making it to work and back over the years and still going.❤

I signed the repair bill, and it was over $12,800! The part itself was over $8K, and labor was just over $4K. That's not it really it. By Jack's example in the beginning lets look at where we were in '99. Back then, median household income was $42k, or $80k in todays dollars. In 2023, the median household income was, drumroll please, $80k. So from a raw earning potential, we're flat adjusted for inflation. And as Jack pointed out, across the automotive space cars have actually undercut the rate of inflation. Cars are actually cheaper to buy now as a portion of earnings than they were in the past. It's the other stuff that's killing us. Housing, healthcare primarily, but education is huge too. To say nothing of food prices in the last few years.

You guys are all great. Loved this conversation. For myself... the wife and I own a 2018 Yaris Hatchback and a 2023 Tacoma. We hope to keep both of these vehicles for many years. They work for us. We live where it hits -40°C every winter, where we don't always have cell reception and where electric chargers are few and far between. We also had a government that compromised our electrical grid in the name of going green all whilst pushing electric cars and buses that have failed miserably. I'm not against electric cars, I'm just against them for where we live because they would literally likely get us killed. If you reside in a city and that cities grid can support it, great. You contribute to developing it, and maybe one day it'll work for us, but right now, it's a joke. What I love about our vehicles are that they're reliable and simple enough that I fix and maintain them. Parts are plentiful, and they're both proven platforms. Most modern vehicles I wouldn't look at beyond a lease. The amount of waste as you discuss is real and very counterproductive to the goal of lowering emissions. Building quality lasting vehicles is better for the environment than building stuff that just ends up in the dump way before it should. Anyways, thank you, gentlemen.

One reason for expensive cars...is very few people actually fully pay for one. They lease it, or they make their payments until they get rid of it. They go to a dealer and negotiate the monthly payment, and you see these 9-year loans, or whatever it takes to get them in. Not a new dealer tactic, but the length of the car mortgage has become nuts. Thus, they really don't feel the full impact of a car's total price any more. Nobody plans to pay it off, basically. The availability of credit at crazy long terms makes it seem like you can afford an expensive car (that you will never actually pay off. That's why something like 40% of the cars in the US today are worth less than the remaining loan balance. People have started to (gradually over 20 years) think of a car payment as a normal expense, like a "car subscription" price. Instead of looking for a car that they will pay off as soon as possible and keep for 20 years. The economic impact of that shift in thinking drives much of what the new car buyer experiences today. I suspect if these 'favorable' loans (7+ year terms) were not available, we'd see a much different landscape for the median and above car buyers. In my opinion, of course.

@@Maxfli82You must be young. Modern cars are much better. In the 70’s a new car would likely go back to the dealer for warranty work in a few months. Three Points... 1) For non-affluent customers, net household incomes have been stagnant for over a decade while car prices have increased 2) Banks in the past would only provide loans where your car expenses represented less than approx. 20% of your take-home pay. No longer 3) Based on average U.S. incomes and existing debt loads most households can afford a $20K Corolla/ Hyundai Elantra but want a $45K SUV As usual the problem is in the mirror in most homes. Also, watch TV and notice how many people are driving around with a suspended license, no license, and no insurance. That cost gets passed on to everyone driving.

You need to compare the MSRP with the respective average wage. The CPI is a measure of prices (it's only a secondary measure of inflation, which is actually money supply not price increases) and car prices are built into that so even if you use that you need to remove transportation as a factor. Having said that, I do agree the increase in safety and relative to the rest of the economy, cars are not wildly different in price than 20 years ago. But, it seems we are more willing to spend a higher percentage of income on our cars and also long term loans have become a lot more common which increases the amount of people with negative equity and rollover loans which puts people into a vicious cycle. Also the elephant in the room is, lobbyists forcing state legislatures to forbid direct to consumer sales, which depending on the estimate could save 20-30%. Get rid of dealership laws.

I think something that can't be ignored is that the average consumer is also expecting a higher class of vehicle than they previously drove. This is easily reflected in the newmarket share of trucks and SUVs. It's over 80% now. Tons of people went from cheaper cars to more expensive types of cars. Instead of people saying that a 2024 Corolla is more expensive than the 2014 Corolla they're trading in, it's that the 2024 Highlander / F-150 is WAY more expensive than the 2014 Corolla they're coming from. Bigger vehicle appetite is not price inflation.

awesome convo with the savage geese dudes. After watching this, I’m extremely happy I made a smart decision 3 1/2 years ago and bought my one owner 2002 Lexus ES300 w 161k miles. No way I’m buying a new car not even when I retire. The 4th gen ES is outstanding. Car is a tank, quality build is outstanding. Whisper quiet, every button/switch still works like new. Now with 186k miles, recent timing belt/water pump (2nd replacement since new), new struts and a few other OEM replacement parts (starter, alternator) I’m set for many many years. At 60 I’m keeping this car until the wheels fall off which is never. I change the synthetic oil myself every 5k miles. 2 years ago I replaced all plugs and Ignition coil packs with DENSO. If properly maintained and driven, The 1MZ-FE engine will last well past 300k miles

The problem with adjusting the value of the car for inflation and then concluding that they were more expensive in the late 1990s, is that the persons income may not have kept up with inflation. So for a lot of people, the rate of inflation relative to their real income is making them worse off and therefore things are in fact more expensive to them. And their incomes are not keeping pace with the cost of higher education, transportation, housing, health care, energy, and so on. So unless incomes catch up with these rising prices, people will find these things more and more out of reach.

Well, the variability of our dollar has a huge effect on car prices. Buying a car in 2015 was great because our prices were very close to US prices, but now you have to factor in our very sad exchange rate so regardless of anything else just the exchange rate has brought up our car prices by nearly 30%.

Buying new is insane for most of us today. That late 90's through mid '00s golden age assessment is spot on! I feel the infotainment features being so important is sad. I just picked up an 01 Camry with low miles for a song. It is lime a time capsule! Like new, and it brings back many memories. Easy to work on, etc... I hate the big screens. I have a phone for that. Easy to clip it in and go. Simulation has done amazing things for cars and survivability. Totally love it. But all the gimmicks! YES! I hate the distractions. At night, these newer cars light up like a spaceship, says my wife. I agree with her and find the distractions dangerous. When I drive my '01 at night, dash dimmed, the experience is amazing! I can see the road. Frankly, I might add some goodies in low key fashion. Back up camera in rearview mirror, for example, rather than a huge screen. Bluetooth stereo integration rather than a screen. You get the idea. Repair is huge for me. I want to fix my car. Need to fix my car. And what is with the fragile, crappy materials used inside? My 00's era car interior has held up. Looks new. Cars made in the 10's are not holding up as much. And lack of buttons and dials? Yes, younger people think touch screens are the best? Truth is they need to experience a low distraction car and reassess! The few I have done that with very quickly understand the hazards involved with touch controls. Lots more to say, but I am enjoying the video! [ continues to drive '01 Camry defensively as possible, happy to avoid big car payment ]

Been a long time subscriber of Savagegeese. Great conversation about a means of transportation. I think as humans, we can make things more complicated than needs to be. Auto companies are businesses and they build what sells. Today's automobiles are safer, more efficient, and faster than ever before. But we have this conundrum, this addiction to tech that is a double edged sword. People don't connect the dots, going down the road at 50mph and playing with their smart phones or 12' infotainment display is deadly. If car reviewers stop reviewing the infotainment system (just don't talk about it in detail) and spend more time talking about ride quality, performance in everyday use, and cost of ownership and repair costs, this will help change peoples view what actually matter the most when thinking about this mode of transportation. The marketing from auto companies feeds this sense of entitlement for only the best is good enough to travel from point A to B, not what is required. Many of us are still little children, we don't know when enough is enough and never will.

In 1991, I paid 16k for a brand new Acura Integra GS, which had power windows, anti-lock brakes, a/c and an AM/FM cassette stereo. 16k in 1991 is like 37k today. This year, I purchased a 2020 Camry XSE AWD for 32k (5k less than the equivalent Integra price). The Camry has everything the Integra had plus an infotainment system, automatic collision avoidance braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, heated seats and mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, fancy lighting package, keyless entry, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming headlights, auto headlights (that also come on when the wipers are on, a nice touch) and much more. Yeah, cars are more expensive, but adjust for inflation and they are not much more expensive. Plus, they offer a whole lot more. CEO's used to make on average 20x their employees in the 40's, 50's, and 60's to over 1000x after they took us off the gold standard.

13:28 Yes, I recently learned that not only does any new car pretty much need better tires in a relatively short period of Of time but the manufactures are also now chipping out on the battery so if you’re buying a new car and you’re gonna keep it past two or three years pretty much assume you’re going to need to replace the tires in the 12 V battery for a quality aftermarket one

I have rav4 hybrid, regular XLE trim, nothing fancy, mileage is 30k miles, my stock oem tires it came with are just 15% worn. I don't think I'll need new tires anytime soon. Also, I've yet to see a rav4 hybrid with dead 12v battery, unless it's been a lot of years.
