Old Boy is at least based on a Japanese manga and exists in the shared cultural space of Japan & Korea, as the two countries do have a lot of the same problems that show up in their media. Before I started learning Japanese and really paying attention to Japanese media, I thought it was Japanese... and it still feels very Japanese in a lot of ways, such as the big reveal that makes things creepy is something that pops up in more of the Japanese media I've read/seen, while I've yet to encounter it in any other Korean media (I've only recently started indulging) Absolutely zero excuse for Crouching Tiger. While China was very influential in the region and aspects of their culture show up in Japan, the two cultures are so distinct I don't think I've ever confused the two, not eve when I was a kid in the 70s.

The thing that’s crazy about his Peter B Parker’s complaints is that across the spider verse is one of the only pieces of media where Peter Parker actually has a good life, gets MJ, has and child and finally settles down but that’s apparently a bad thing. Here's the funny thing. Imagine a world where in GvK during the boat scene Kong was NOT in chains. CD's take would then be: "Oh...so you have this gigantic monster and your characters are too stupid to protect themselves by taking precautions. You know in original versions of King Kong he was ALWAYS carried over in chains...as it was an allegory for the slave trade. But God forbid today's WOKE Hollywood would risk including that kind of imagery since it would offend all the snowflakes...even though it would be entirely practical and serve the story."

Does Drinker think “woke Hollywood” came up with the idea of Kong being in chains in Godzilla vs. Kong? That’s literally a major part of the Kong mythos since the original 1933 movie. I’ll give him props for actually understanding that it’s an analogy to the slave trade and the racist preconceptions, but he gets a failing grade for interpreting it in true pants on head fashion
@Zac_Frost
@Zac_Frost 15 күн бұрын
True. You could see it as the allegory, but in the context of GvK, it was more to ensure the safety of the innocents on the ship. The only humans Kong trusts in that universe are the little girl, and the Doctor woman (and saying he trusts her is a stretch). It's not so much about detainment, but safety, as he's a 200 foot angry monster that can pull skyscrapers apart with ease and is very temperamental.

21:40 If there's one thing I'll defend the Drinker here is shitting one PETA, there have been countless incidents of euthanizing animals who did not need to be put down. Their protests are some next level gruesome, even going as far as to make a detailed comic book called "My Mommy Kills Animals" and give these to children coming out of the mall if their mothers were wearing fur, real or not. That isn't their worst protest in my opinion, but it's a pretty damn good one to show what they will do to even attempt to get people on their side.

About Gina Carano, you should watch the video Nerdotic made when her character debuted in the Mandalorian. It was a while ago but i clearly remember how he complained about her being the Strong Indipendent Wahman, and the live chat basically agreed with him. And let's not forget Prey. I remember that "Predator against native americans" was a fan concept way before the movie, since the entire point is that you have to beat the Predator with his own game, by hunting him and being clever instead of using guns or brute force. But as soon as the trailer dropped, so many people complained about the female protagonist because "Arnold is a big strong man and almost died fighting him, how can a weak small chick have any chance?" These types of discussions hurt actual, genuine film criticism. I don't care what's the skin color of the underwater singing mermaid, i don't care if a woman wins a fight against an opponent twice her size or against several opponents together, because i saw these exact fights with a male protagonist and no one ever complained no matter how unrealistic it was. Why do nobody of these film critics talk about the cinematography? the shot composition? The editing? And why do they only talk about big blockbuster movies and don't look for other, lesser known directors and movies if they're so fed up with HollyWOKE and their big bloated franchises that they hate and said they're done watching (but apparently still make videos after videos when a new show/movie of said franchise comes out).

Superpowers aside, it's more believable to see a buff chick, rather than someone dainty beating up everyone. Not sure why these incels have such a problem with it. I see Brienne of Tarth slaughtering all but the best fighters and I buy into it because not only is she skilled and well-trained, she's got the physique to compete. Similarly, Arya tries to perforate the Hound by ramming her tiny little rapier through his brigandine, only to discover she doesn't have the strength and the blade isn't beefy enough to do the job. (this is where I wish later seasons Arya had been better portrayed as a rogue/assassin, rather than a frontline soldier) You want your characters to be believable, you have to play to their strengths. It makes perfect sense that Gina Carano would be able to stomp a mudhole into a lot of dudes, because she has the physique (and I assume the training, never watched any of the series) to facilitate this. These guys just want to see girls smash pots over people's heads.

I just saw this brilliant take. I initially agreed with some of Critical Drinker's videos because of the initial direction of some movies, such as the Kennedy-run Star Wars franchise. However, it became clear that his agenda was not about making better movies; it was about the so-called "Woke Agenda." Most of the issues with Star Wars were about the writing and respect for the franchise, NOT the characters. Some successes include Rogue One (female lead), and Rey was not a bad character. She just deserved better writers and directors. Unfortunately, Drinker was too lazy or unwilling to research or give a well-thought-out answer. Maybe he thought shilling the same formula to his audience would be easier. The Carano example was quite pathetic. I did not even know he had criticized her acting in the past. Regarding the ban, if the so-called movie buff had taken the time to do his research, he would have found that Pedro Pascal (the MAIN CHARACTER) had been asked to take down some left-leaning posts criticizing Trump- the difference is that he listened. The incident was simply an organization requesting that employees/partners refrain from overtly political statements which could affect profits or brand perception. What made this more ridiculous was that the issue was over COVID conspiracy theories. Disney asked Carano MULTIPLE times to do the same and refused. The fact that Drinker missed or ignored this shows how biased he is.

I didn’t even think about the black woman in the Minecraft movie and assumed he thought they made Jason Mamowa gay for wearing pink or something. Whistler is literally a new character, they edited out Blade's comic book mentor, a black man, for a white person. How about _Harry Potter_ ? Has he complained about Hermione being race swapped from a black girl to a white girl? How about _Prince of Persia_ being starred by NOT a Persian actor? And that's just off the top of my head. If he hasn't, don't you think it's a bit odd that his critiques of race and gender swapping only happen in a certain direction? As in, it's only valid to criticize a race swap if it's AWAY FROM a white person, or AWAY FROM a man? 🧐

Felt like they were more intent on ignoring actual critical stuff to focus on targeting people and pushing an agenda-laden message.. but their shit can be insidious. I fell down the alt-right rabbit hole very hard after Disney Star wars, Alteori, The Critical Drinker, Mauler, Shadiversity, Nerdrotic, and Clownfish TV. It's brutal because now, whenever I find a new KZbin channel I like, I have to hope they aren't going to get political. What pulled me out of that sphere was a discussion about Rings of Power and a character's "power stance," which featured a woman sitting down. They spent like 10 minutes talking about this. This was just a woman sitting down. Another thing that turned me off was encountering one of those "rassist" people in real life. They spent an hour talking my ear off about how Luke Skywalker was meant to be an alpha male. About how Kathleen Kennedy killed Star Wars. They were also one of the biggest fucking assholes I have ever had the displeasure of meeting and got fired from our job for creeping on a girl fifteen years younger than him. Hes also dead now cause "covid was made up by the liberals." Those channels can talk all they want about how "wokeness" is killing hollywood and ruining america but i have yet to meet a "woke" person that's a garbage person. I've had the misfortune of meeting many anti woke people who are.

He's mad that it's there but like does he not want subtext in films does he not want genre films to discuss and explore real world issues? As somebody who enjoys genre films it gets kinda frustrating when people say they want it taken seriously out of one side of their mouth but deny any attempt to analyze or communicate deeper themes out the other. That said we kinda know why in this case. He nor his audience want to acknowledge the things being discussed subtextually
