In beautiful music building at my university, where I spend the majority of my time, there is an individual who pops popcorn in a public microwave. They are not a music major and they just use the building to work remotely. They burn the popcorn. Every. Time. And the decrepit smell of burnt popcorn is wafted through the beautiful, peaceful building. I never had a reason to rant about this.

Now I'm wondering did that dude just like burnt popcorn, cuz personally, once I burn it, I can't eat it. Flavors ruined. Hard to think he just goes there every day to waste a bag a popcorn. I'd be leaving a note suggesting they take it out 10-15 seconds earlier so everyone isn't saturated in burnt popcorn smell for the rest of the day.

If your microwave has a humidity sensor, the popcorn button will always be your best bet. The reason most popcorn bags have "Do not use popcorn button" on them is because the popcorn producer doesn't know what kind of microwave you have and they don't want you to get a bad impression of their popcorn from user error. If you don't know whether your microwave has a humidity sensor, you can try the popcorn button, if it asks you for the weight or size of the bag, it just has some pre-programmed timers that aren't worth using. Technology Connections has a surprisingly interesting video on microwaves and the popcorn button if anyone is interested, thats where i found this out from.

It’s 30 cals for a POPPED cup in Skinny Pop, so the whole bag is 75 cals. Popcorn bags unpopped have a lot more calories in them (like 5x as much), which is where the 375 calories that Scott mentions comes from. So the calorie intake for all of these is probably way less than Scott is saying. We still love you, Scott!

*Perfect Popcorn Recipe:* 1. Pour a little oil in the pot; 2tbsp for every 1/3 cup kernels. 2. Set to medium heat (around 4-6 depending on your stovetop). 3. Put 3 kernels into the oil, and put the lid on. 4. In a few minutes, the kernels will begin to pop, and it's time to add in the rest of the popcorn (this means the oil is ready). 5. Moving the pot around occasionally, wait for all of your kernels to pop. 6. When done popping, pour into bowl. Salt & season immediately while they are still slightly wet with oil (this helps the seasoning stick).

Also you couldn't order things online back then so it was, like this, just whatever brands they sold at our local stores lol I loved it bc there was popcorn at all times for days and I didn't have to do any of the work 😂 Edit: damn looks like pop secret is still on top lol noice

I did a science fair project about microwave popcorn in elementary school! Basically we got a bunch of different brands from the store (the only ones I remember were Orville Redenbacher, Pop Secret, Newman's Own, and generic store brand) and I think there were three times we tried, to best control for popping time, and we just wanted to see which brand left the fewest kernels. From what I recall I think Orville Redenbacher was our best performing brand, and Newman's Own was the worst (forgive me, it's been 15 years). So often your videos are entertaining on their own, but this was such a fun nostalgia trip too!

After last year’s chewing gum takedown and this year’s exposé on popcorn, can’t wait to see what big snack industry Scott will tackle next. Will it be pretzels? Gummy bears maybe? Possible be the humble potato chip? Perhaps a turn into the world of drinks with the bottled water industry or even the powdered drink mix monoliths.

I am so happy to see someone else who enjoys ripping and licking the bag. I do it everytime! Not all of it, just a little 😂 the salty butter is so irresistible.

The waxy film on the Jolly Time popcorn is unfortunately the hydrogenated oil they use. Super terrible for you. 😬 But like your wife, it used to be my favorite. And I also licked the bag. 😂😂😂

As a European this video has opened a new world. How many brands of popcorn do you guys have ?? BUTTER is the “standard” flavor??? You guys have a popcorn button on your microwave? Wdym 😭
@mekko9022 ай бұрын
Many many brands and flavors! I Butter/salty being srandard, and then maybe kettle corn (sweet) coming in second. Then there's also the unflavored kernels for stove-top or air-popping. And pre-popped popcorn in bags. I would also remember corn is literally from North America, so it's a native food/really important part of our diet. Also it's just normal in the US to have WAY too much variety of one thing, cereal being the prime example. Grocery stores literally have an aisle (or one side of an aisle) dedicated to cereal here. I lived abroad for a while and American grocery stores were really back overwhelming when I came back! Like, why does one need to choose between so many options?
@ashschmitt15012 ай бұрын
In Brazil we also use butter as "the standard", and ALL microwaves have the popcorn button (didn't know this wasn't a thing outside of the continent!). About the brands I don't know, never paid attention hahaha, but at least 5/6

@@themischief420 i'm canadian and we have like half of one side of the aisle for cereal and mayyyybe a third of the selection.... pretty sure the US is more dedicated to sugary cereals than any where else. be proud!

Those half popped kernels from the black jewell bag are definitely some of my favourite parts of the popcorn to eat. Someone needs to make them a snack, half popped kernels. I'd buy, they're so good!

technology connections has a good video on the existence of the popcorn button and the number unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag i believe is dependent on the moisture within the kernels itself
@heatherduke77032 ай бұрын
Yeah, I grew popcorn and first you had to let it dry. Then if it wasn’t popping well, you needed to sprinkle some water in the storage container That’s also what I would expect from that black popcorn. It’s probably from heritage breeds of popcorn so it’s not going to pop as well

Weirdest freaking thing. I just made a bag in the microwave and was frustrated because I can never get the timing right. Either burning it or not getting enough kernels to pop.
@notoriousstrikes42842 ай бұрын
The tip is to wait until the time between pops is a second. I feel like that made Scott's kernel rating a little erratic 😂
@1silenthunder12 ай бұрын
I was having that issue so I started writing the times down and slowly figured out the time I needed for it to be the perfect pop. Just sucks if you ever have to replace the microwave, or switch brands cuz then it’s meaningless lol
