In an emotional interview, Davey Jackson talks to Dr. John Cornish, the man who helped expose the Shiny Happy People cult (aka IBLP).
Dr. Cornish co-founded Recovering Grace, a website dedicated to helping victims of the IBLP cult find support and recovery. As the Recovering Grace community grew, they discovered a series of scandals involving cult founder and leader, Bill Gothard. The group's allegations forced Gothard to leave the cult in disgrace.

I found Recovering Grace website around 2012 , Homeschoolers Anonymous, another site exposing Doug Phillips , etc . As a homeschooling mother it opened my eyes to the legalism and basically false gospel being peddled by Gothard and Phillips . Wow we were spared much heartbreak by these courageous survivors.

Thanks so much for doing this series. It is so similar to the IFB movement i grew up in and still in the process of detangling from. Im still a Christian and want my children to know about Jesus but not traumatized by the legalism and brain washing of someone's opinions. I came across the Recovering Grace website in 2016 when I was realizing that the IFB church I was in was a cult. I think I just googled spiritual abuse and IFB and found it. Even though I had a very small contact with Gothard (my parents went to one local conference when they were dating and we went to one when I was a teen with videos of Gothard which I thought was really lame 😅), I found it very helpful! But, yes, the experiences I had in IFB culture were eerily similar.

Gothard basically just took IFB teachings out of the church and applied it on a much larger scale in an educational format. He pretty much left the churches alone because he knew there was more money and more power going the “institutional” route.

2012 I found Recovering Grace. We’d been out of ATI since about 2001 but I was clueless (I’m the mom) about what damage had really been done til I found this wonderful website. Will forever be thankful.

Watching this interview, I realized Recovering Grace was the catalyst for getting my family out of ATI. My older sister and I had already “graduated”, but because of the Quiver Full movement, my dad had gotten a reversal to his vasectomy and my parents now found themselves starting their family over again and were planning to get back involved in ATI. I discovered Recovering Grace though one of my cousins who’s family were also in ATI. She sent me a link to some of the claims the women had started coming forward with, and I sent these to my mom. As more information started coming out (along with pictures from curriculum in the wisdom booklet regarding rape), my mom and I began to have serious conversations about the program. She and I both lost our virginities through rape by acquaintances we knew, and there was a lot of blame we both went through. Sadly, because of the indoctrination in ATI, when I told my mom what had happened to me, even though she had been through it herself, there was blame and I was told during one of our conversations as I cried that I “just need to get over it.” Years later she admitted she had been told them same thing and she was envious that I was allowing myself to grieve what had happened. As we went through the rape curriculum again via Recovering Grace, my mom and I realized how distorted and evil the doctrine was. Thankfully, this began the road to healing, and my family allowed me to come over and purge their house of any IBLP/ATI documents I could find. I’m 40 now, and although it’s been more than 20 years since I finished high school and was being taught these things, my family and I are still in the process of healing and disentangling true scriptural principles from Gothard’s materials. The process has been slow at times and very painful, but I am so thankful to Recovering Grace for bringing to light the damage that Bill and his programs caused. Thank you for being a truth bearer. Although my sister and I went through hell, discovering your website helped save my little brother from going through the same and being indoctrinated into a toxic and damaging program. Thank you for helping save at least one person from this program.

i was a teenaged fundamentalist. i had bery little experience with Gothard. I saw a poster for one of the Basic Youth Conflicts semminar where one of the testimonials was "he solved problems I did not know I had." I do not know why that squicked me but it did. my next experience was listening to sa song by Steve Taylor song called "I Manipulate." so I had no idea there was this huge organizzation around him until very recently. I have added a line in my prayer list for the healing wholeness recovery and redemption of Gothard's survivors..

That quote about gothard solving problems they didn’t know they had is so telling. Maybeee it’s because they didn’t actually have a problem and IBLP hurt people more than it ever helped them. Glad you steered clear! 🙏🏻❤️

What an great interview. I think that it is so so important to shine a light on false doctrine that is a gross miscarriage of the faith. To me, this teaching is close to what got God's people exiled in the OT. Bill seemed to be an idol. Jesus would have called Bill a white washed tomb. Jesus says that people will know His followers by their love. The fruit that Bill has is wickedness.

TRIGGER WARNING---CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE i found discoveringgrace 12 years ago when i was healing from hip surpgery---i had been on the periphery of IBLP teachings thinking I was wrong for being me, horse lover, artist, independent thinker and not wanting children and other things about my personality that took a one on one with God for Him to tell me He had made me like I am including my faults and weaknesses. I have been researching the subject of male authority over female and all the rules put forth by gothard that even led to other groups making more rules for women to follow including morphing into wife spanking....yes in the christian church. AND THE ONE THINKG IT ALL POINTS BACK TO IS PATRIARCHY AS THE UNDERLYING MODUS OPERANDI IN THE CHURCH---where male authority is the thing by which the church makes all its rules instead of CHRIST AS LORD OVER EACH INDIVIDUAL patriarchy is the canser that must be exiised from the church. God made both genders equal and He gifts them as He sees fit regardelss of gender.
