Oh don't worry, Overview *is* optional! there's an option to disable it in labs! Unfortunately, this doesn't work at least 50% of the time.

Thanks so much for for that. My traffic has halved in the last week and I noticed it was visits from the US that were down particularly (which is how I ended up here). Since I'm based in the UK, I can't monitor how AI Overview functions. This is infuriating.

Instead of going INTO school to get taught by the teachers with real experience (websites), there's now a criminal standing in the school car park (Google) regurgitating garbled sentences (AI Overviews) from the teachers with real experience in the hopes of keeping the kids in the car park (Google) in order to sell them sweets (ads). Apparently the kids (searchers) love this and it's actually going to be better for the teachers and school though. But there's no data on that. Or there is, but we're not allowed to see it.

Sorry, but when i search for something, i need results, not an "experience". Or AI is babeling for minutes before giving an answer, like we have some demos now where the machine tells you how exciting this or that is. It still a machine, there is no "reasoning", only what some google-techs though is will be best. Sure a housewife in irkutsk searching a borschtsch recipe will need exactly that.

While I'm so sorry to hear you're in the same boat, this also makes me feel better to read that I'm not alone. My site got hit hard by the algorithm change in 2022/2023. I didn't think it could get worse. Then I heard about this AI search thing coming out, and I saw something that said traffic would be impacted 20-30%. (Going down, not up.) This week I saw that happen, but my percentage was more in line with yours. Which, I'm no math-magician, but from the basic calculations I can make, that's over a 50% drop in your traffic. In that same boat. Very disheartening for sure.

Given that SGE hasn't rolled out even in tests, I imagine it won't be until early Q4 that we see AI Overviews in the UK SERPs, but that's entirely a prediction on my part.

Seems like you are worried. Seems to me that Google is just taking your job. You call it a black box. That is everything the SEO consulting business has sold for years. So, let's take it down to the basics. A business must offer an excellent service and experience. This needs to be "found" by Google. SEO specialists.....good luck.

It's the job of marketers (in-house or partners) to make it easier for Google to find those products and services.

I was invested in this video until you threw agencies under the bus to promote yours. I am on the client side and even I understand that agencies can't share every single update as soon as Google announces it. Infact they shouldn't especially since it's so new.

But it's not new. AI Overviews has been in active beta (as SGE) for a year. I've spoken with hundreds of business owners this year and about 5% of them have heard about SGE from their agencies. If I were a business owner anywhere else and my agency wasn't already testing and teaching me about SGE I'd be deeply, deeply concerned.
