As a voice teacher and coach, I thank you for taking your time to share with our future performers how you do what you do. Often times, in todays world of instant gratification, younger singers don't have the understanding of exactly what it takes to build a singing career. Taking the time to establish a very solid vocal technique allows one to sing the notes the composer wrote, which allows one to explore, express, and interpert the character just as you have so beautifully described. Thanks

I so loved on being expressive with the voice, sometimes I listen to recordings of myself and am blown away by how much I thought I was feeling and how little of that read. You're a beautiful genius! And when I listen you sing I'm Ha-a-a-a-a-a-a-py.

This is brilliant! Thank you so much for posting! It is so unbelievably refreshing to hear someone take the time to dissect the emotional/technical aspect of singing, especially when you are dealing with a vague text or drawn out musical lines. And you do it so well! I always look forward to these postings; they give such clarity to otherwise overlooked vocal/theatrical concepts.

I need for you to visit my city of Houston soon please! You are at the top of my live performance bucket list! Joyce, never doubt your awesomeness. You are so incredibly gifted and the fact that you are so generous with your teaching just makes me love you even more. Thank you for always being an inspiration. This girl fell in love with opera because of Joyce DiDonato. You are powerful, lady.

I don’t know if you ever look back on these comments but I’ve not discovered anyone who inspired me the way you do. Your passion reminds me of why I’m putting in all this work and I am so grateful. All the discoveries I make along the way in a practice room, when I figure out how to approach something- in your videos I can confirm whether I can tick that box and move on for now or not! Whatever- this video is saved for next time my heart doesn’t skip a beat at the thought of learning about all the things that come along with improving and figuring out how to let my voice out!! As always I won’t be able to sleep tonight because the thoughts are wizzing but it’s bed time...

So happy to find this channel! I'm a young mezzo in Australia! I finished my Bmus in voice. I decided to study Law while my voice develops. I'll finish my law degree next year, when I'm 23. What was your journey to opera singing? Was there ever anything else you considered doing? xx Elise

However, to start feeling confident about support all the time, try thinking about expansion all around. I've heard that we can control how far the diaphragm descends by expanding the rib cage in all directions. Sit in a chair and lean down to touch your toes. Breathe in through your nose and try to send the air into your back and your sides. This will help isolate the expansion in your lower rib cage, which makes breathing more natural and not forced. Hope this helps.

Hello, I am a 17 year old baritone and I have this really weird breath issue. Whenever my diaphragm tries to expand to take a full breath, it won't. (Here's the catch) THIS ONLY HAPPENS ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! When my tummy is full, I can inhale to my hearts content. I'm really really skinny, does it have something to do with not having anything to breath against? Question: Have you met anyone in your career who has had this (or a similar) issue? If so, any advice? (Other than eat...:) Thank you.
