Yes to continental knitting! Double yes to your hilarious outtakes. Triple yes for demystifying the new world of charts. Written instructions are tough enough for this beginning knitter, but I didn't know the left-to-right then right-to-left chart reading sequence until today. What gets me is RS and WS, since it seems the first row would always be RS, but maybe there's some knitting magic spell I haven't learned yet. Love your videos, love your yarn, and I love your patterns. Thank you for you!

Hi Chandi! Great video! I love charts! Once I got the hang of reading them years ago I find them so helpful. I’m trying so hard. I’ve spent weeks trying out your easy patterns but end up unpicking them every time. The tension is too loose at the beginning and gets tighter. I’m still practicing, but feel so upset some times. I really want a beautiful shawl to give a gift to a friend, I watch you regularly to cheer me up and to keep going. Thank you for this instructional video! I am a visual learner myself. When I was learning how to read patterns, charts were so helpful! My mom taught me how to knit and read patterns when I was about 8 years old. Now I use washi tape or my Knit Picks magnetic pattern holder with strips that underline each row. I prefer charts when a pattern contains cables or other types of repeats. Your explanation will help a lot of new knitters ❤️❤️

I have to ask ( even tho I don’t knit ) do you do the same pattern even if you knit left handed ? I crochet and I usually have to read the pattern tern right to left and crochet left to right ( if that makes sense) .

The cast on of 54 stitches is for the scarf size. If you would like the size we did in the video, you would cast on 94 stitches. 😊

I’m strictly a knitter that knows how to crochet a little bit but when I look at crochet charts I can’t make any sense of them! Knitting charts are more logical, and easier to decipher. I find I have made much less mistakes in my knitting when using charts vs written patterns.

My brain fogs up so much about the «repeat» box, I wanted to make a baby blanket with lace, but I didn’t make it past the ribbing 🫠 I just don’t understand if the YO takes up a box in the chart or it belongs to the previous or next box. maybe I should decipher the chart into words or draw it out in the whole rows 🤣 maybe once the patterns sticks I’ll be ok…

While this was helpful, I am still confused. The chart you used for your demo had a red square around part of the pattern and you said that was a repeat. Where would it state in the chart how many times to repeat that section? I hope this makes sense.

The written instructions will tell you how many times you repeat the portion of the chart outlined in red.

@@ExpressionFiberArts i am sure there is but it seems if you are someone who needs a chart then the people who prefer a written instruction is being forced to use a graph. i recently got one of your patterns thinking it had the written instructions but then i was forced to use a graph. This graph frustrates me and i spend more time colour coding the graph, figure out if i have counted enough stiches and which direction i am going. i have a lace pattern which i cant knit because it is a graph only and i have stiches outside the repeat and i dont unstand why they are there. the pattern for rubato has a row1 outside the red red box, and i dont understand why it is there. Not everyone is visual and all learnering styles need to be included. Are there any apps that convert the graphs to written instructions if not someone should do this.

That is very hard to do. Some people just talk with their hands. I am deaf in my left ear and talking with my hands (not signing) helps me express what I am trying to say, I guess I’m compensating for only having half my hearing.
