18-5-2020: Wow. Took me five years to find this and I binged watched it in two days. To me this made me laugh, smile, cringe, cry, and think about the meaning and value of life. There are real life folk such as Derek, and Ricky you must have had some contact in your life to portray this so well. Ps bloody hell, the dog scenes got me and I’m a bloody 50 year old kiwi in the upside down world.

Like or loath Ricky Gervais you can't deny his ability to write the most stunning drama's, Derek and Afterlife. They're so well written, they make me laugh and cry uncontrollably in equal measure. The office and extras were both great , but his later stuff is just amazing.

I completely.... DISAGREE. I love Gervais but his later dramitic shit is so poorly written, the shows are repetitive and follow the same reductive pattern of manipulation- an OTT reflective monologue (where characters inexplicably start talking about their views on life in overly verbose and deep ways) whilst some sad litle piano music plays over the top. Tat is not good writing, that is eaasily achieved. His early work was very good, and the dramatic moments -without the paint-by-numbers emotional blackmail- were good too. This is transparently mawkish shit.

For me Karl is one of the most real characters in this. I don't know why he left, but he was made for this role. Karl has said he isnt really an actor, but I think he under estimates himself...everything he does has such a sense of realism, that his scenes become not like a scene at all; more a behind the scenes.

He said he wasn't happy because he felt insecure. He thought he didn't belong on the set with such experienced performers, although I don't think they would agree. The pressure was mainly in his mind. Ricky wouldn't have cast someone who couldn't keep up in such a big role. It's a shame, because he played Dougie so well, and he wasn't just playing himself. The character was based on him but there was a script-he had to do proper acting and he was brilliant at it. He has natural talent, and he was able to improvise. Also, he claims he didn't like the shooting schedule/time commitment-long hours on location away from his DIY, etc. I suspect his twisted relationship with Ricky was another factor.
