But these shows have some really thought provoking dialogue and scenes that touch your heart. Great, great actors (Gervais, Conaty, Godliman, Wilkinson, Pilkington and of course the amazing Penelope Wilton etc, etc) and you can relate and even if you can't, anyone with an ounce of humanity has to appreciate the balance between comedy and drama he's gifted us with here with these 2 shows. Loved it when Karl pushed back against Ricky about Cornflakes. Just finished season one. I watched After Life and it was so effing brilliant that I searched out more Gervais projects. I love the fact that there's not a supermodel to be found anywhere. They are all real-looking, ordinary people like most of us. While After Life and Derek are both hilarious, they both are also poignant and born of the best of humanity. Gervais is brilliant, and he knows how to extract brilliance from the people around him.

@rickygervais (if you ever see this) the episode with Ivor hit me the hardest, and watching Derek go through the pain of having to witness an animal he loved being euthanized somehow gave me strength that I know I will one day need. You’ll never know how much this impacted me. Thank you, so very much, for pursuing your passion projects to the fullest. Thank you for this show.

Derek is like a caricature of Ricky himself in a way. Not the mentally handicapped part but the genuine love for everyone and everything. He makes everyone around him happier.

Karl, you're far too humble about yourself, you're by far the best character, and u act well also! And I'm American and probably a fortunate one, bc, i think British comedy is gold, and you changed my life, you made me get into British comedy, and now there are a slew of great British comedians/comedies I love. So, thank you!!! =)=)=)=)

Ricky’s joy of Karl is without exaggeration one of my favorite things in my 62 years of life. I cannot explain how my heart fills with love when I see or hear the two of them.

Ricky is the only person who can actually make me cry as someone who has worked in care for along time, so much is true, unfortunately how they present care for the elderly in my experience is so very very wrong, I'd give my life for the type of care the elderly get in this series.
