In this video we show how to install extended differential breathers (front and rear) on an 80 Series Landcruiser. The video best applies to all 70/80/105 Series Landcruisers, though the Terrain Tamer TTDBK kit shown can be used for any four-wheel drive. The exact routes used may vary based on engine and gearbox configuration, as well as any existing modifications on your vehicle.

Not sure if it has been mentioned already. Before fitting the new diff breather kit, unscrew the barbs from the axle and run a small drill down them as they are often blocked with up to 30 years of gunge, then refit. This will allow the diffs to vent freely as the temps inside rise and fall.

Hi mate, thanks for watching. Not a bad tip - best to make sure they're clear while you're there.

Hi, thanks for the video, very helpful. Do you know if the manual gearbox on an 80 series diesel 24 valve has a breather? Or the transfer box perhaps?

Great work. Nicely done and so timely, as I just got a diff breather kit (SaaS) - it comes with 4 breathers. In addition to both diffs, I'll also do the gearbox/transfer case (plus optional for the winch if I had one). Any reason you decided against fitting one on the gearbox?

Thanks for watching! Great question, this particular kit only comes with 2 port breathers and that's quite common. I find that the diff breathers are in a bit more compromising position from the factory, given the angle you sometimes enter/leave the bogholes at, so treated them as a bit higher priority. I had also found the rear breather was clogged previously, as shown by air hissing out when opening the filler plug, likely from a mud hole. That being said, we might do a video on the transmission and transfer case breathers in future, probably another 2-port set-up so they're all separate. Certainly worth doing all 4 for peace of mind

@@2ndGearLow Yes I was wondering about those 2 breathers too. I know I'm late to the party but please do a video on those as well.

Those are already much higher than most newer Toyotas stick😂 crazy they stopped doing the slightly extended hose line and just put a breather sticking directly off the diff by itself… wow

Hi, the loop in the hose is to allow extra length for the car to move up and down with the suspension travel without pulling the end of the hose off the axle housing

Where did you get your Toyota oil filter socket
@2ndGearLow
@2ndGearLow 6 ай бұрын
Hi Greg, thanks for watching. The Toyota oil filter wrench SST 0922807502 was bought from Partsouq.com. the Ryco RST219 is very similar, but not quite as tight fitting as the Toyota one

Do you use loctite or teflon tape?
@2ndGearLow
@2ndGearLow 3 ай бұрын
Hi John, no we did not use loctite or teflon tape. The barb fittings shown in the video are designed to create a seal with the tube, and the threaded connection between the breather and the breather (M) and threaded end (F) of the barb does not require thread tape to serve its purpose. This is a very low pressure system, and the breathers are intentionally located above any areas where water could enter
