Absolutely correct Arijit. We talk about Novak finding ways to win when he doesnt play anywhere close to his best, and how when he plays well he often dominates the match regardless of the opponent and the tournament apart from Nadal at FO. But we never (or hardly ever) talk about Novak playing his absolute top level but still coming up short in a tennis match because its something that just does not happen apart from vs Nadal at FO. Yet somehow it happened here. Both guys were on fire and playing at the absolute top of their game. This was later voted the best ATP (non-slam) tennis match of 2019 and very deservedly so. Thiem called it (up to that point) the best match he ever played. That's the effort required to take down a peak Novak Djokovic. Another notable time Novak lost when playing his absolute top level: AO 2014 QF vs Stan Wawrinka :)

Everyone talks about how the GOATs find a way to win when they are not playing their best. Nobody talks about the GOATs losing to a non GOAT when the GOAT plays their best. Why? Because it seemingly never happens, or happens too rarely to warrant a mention. This is one of those rare times Djokovic played the best he possibly could but still somehow ended up on the losing end. When was the last time that happened vs a non GOAT?? Probably Stan Wawrinka at AO 2014 and FO 2015. Last time Novak played his best but lost to a non GOAT and someone not named Stan Wawrinka or Dominic Thiem? Can't think of one...that's how good Djokovic is. Dominic hit 51 winners in this match. And still BARELY won this match. Djokovic hit only 2 unforced errors in the first set and BARELY won it. On this day Djokovic and Thiem would have destroyed just about everyone else on the tour except for Djokovic and Thiem themselves.

@@Boom85Boom possibly the exception, but Rafa hasn't beaten Novak off a clay court since 2013 so that did not surprise anyone (although it was a good thrashing). I don't expect Rafa to ever beat him on a hard court again honestly. What I have seen of Novak, he has been consistently good but not unbeatably good, this tournament included. Apart from assessing his game, his win loss record over the last two years has not been spectacular either (110-24 or 82 percent, which is his career average) if you compare it to 2015-2016 (where he lost just 9 matches and had almost a 95 percent winning rate when he won Roland Garros). I'd still put my money on him to win it obviously. The guy could take the trophy dropping only one set. But I wouldn't call his current form, or the form he has had for some time, god mode. 2015-2016 was god mode. A lot of world class players have recently shown they can beat Novak if they peak, Thiem among them.

It all depends on Thiem on sunday. Novak is Novak, but he's pretty much a defensive robot. The best ever in that aspect, but if the player on the other part of the net goes full agression and he has a day, he wins. This video shows it, as well as their last few matches in all which Thiem dominated offensively. Same with Wawrinka. If however, Dominic has a normal day he will lose in straights. In short, to beat Novak nowadays you have to destroy him with shots and all has to be inside court. Which of course is hard as hell. That's why I said it depends on Thiem, cuz Novak will be 100% for sure.

Dont be delusional. It all depends on NOVAK. If he is going to be on top lvl its game over. Thiem simply doesnt have that quality
@radilev19964 жыл бұрын
@@DR-110 Nope. Novak cannot neutralize naturally more agressive player like Wawrinka and Thiem on their best day. Which explains why he has struggled so much vs them as the only two players to give him so much trouble outside of big 4. Then again, as I said, if Thiem is to win it, he must put balls in. That's the hardest thing vs Novak who makes you play one extra ball and has the best defense ever seen on hard court.
@DR-1104 жыл бұрын
@@radilev1996 you are delusional again. Novak is 19-6 against Stan, and he beat him in 2013 in an epic match. Just wait for the final and you will see. Same story as last year, "Nadal is smashing everyone, he changed his serve, bla bla" nonsense and than Novak destroys him. Djokovic in 3 or 4

@GTS tell that shit to Nadal. Novak played extraordinary in all of his recent GS titles

It's on Novak's racket - in that ATP final he was too passive, not enough aggression, no down the line shots etc. If he brings out God mode with his linear shot making (like he did against Rafa last year), then he wins.

If Thiem plays like this, or even better how he played Zverev in the semi's Novak has some serious competition. I feel like Thiem (and maybe recenltly Medvedev) is the only real contenders that has been knocking on various doors of the big 3 in recent years.

I think we as tennis fans are in for a treat on Sunday. Regardless who wins the title, the Thiem and Djokovic match will be an epic because both are playing some incredible tennis. It will probably go on for five sets, five hours and will be decided by a few points, similar to how the Wimbledon and US Open finals of last year unfolded.

I'm not sure Thiem's fully recovered from his match against Nadal, and Djokovic is playing as good as I've seen him play, so Thiem will have his hands full. Djokovic hits the ball flatter and that makes a significant difference on hard courts. He'll need to bring his 'A' game - like he played against Nadal, to have any chance of winning. If he plays like he did against Zverev then it's over in 3 sets. It would be great if he starts to shorten the points, since maintaining that level of heavy top spin during long rallies will take a toll on you, especially during a long match. It should be a great match. I'd like to see him win his 1st Grand Slam but he'll need some luck.🤞🤞🤞

Novak, the clear favorite in Melbourne in 4 sets. Thiem either wins the 1st set or the 3rd. But honestly, Thiem can beat Novak. He is reminiscent of Wawrinka against whom Novak had nightmares.

If Thiem plays like he did in this match and against Nadal in AO then he has a 70 percent chance of winning. However Thiem can have his off days where he can lose to anyone. So it’s very hard to say. I want a new champion but my heart says that djoker will find a way.
