What a backhand Federer had in 2017...
@dfsfklsj

Yeah it's strange how it's more of a weakness for him now. Nowadays he's often just pushing the ball back with his backhand with no intentions of constructing a point with it.
@JiraiyaSama86
@JiraiyaSama86 5 жыл бұрын
dfsfklsj several factors come into play. He was much more fresh due to the long break, and there were less expectations which allowed him to play more freely. It was similar to how Nadal was crushing FH DTL in 2013. After that it is back to regular expectations and grind. That and players may have adjusted more to his game where now he needs to adjust. Even Federer isn’t going to just recklessly go aggressive with that shot unless he feels confident enough to pull it off. The backhand will always be the first shot in his arsenal expected to break. He can play great with it one season and then not so much the next. But his forehand and serve will remain the reliable weapons that they are.

@@JiraiyaSama86 Good points. I will say that Fed not being aggressive on his backhand shots isn't necessarily gonna open up better shots on his forehand side. When he doesn't get enough power/depth/angle on his backhand it gives his opponent the opportunity to attack. Exhibit A his recent match against Thiem. I think he still needs to be more aggressive with his backhand, just not reckless.

I also watched it live truly one of in not the greatest matches in tennis history at a non grand slam tournament, it really shows something that kyrgios can go head to head with 2017 fed. I think that the call from the crowd affected kyrgios mentally and instead of smashing a raquet he took his anger out on the serve and tried to hit a 130mph 2nd serve. If kyrgios had the mentality of djokovic to bring his best level at grand slams he could hold the title of grand slams. Now his attitude is definitely better but he doesnt take tennis as seriously. It depends what you call the Best match: nadal-djokovic madrid 2009 was great in terms of phisicality and brutal hitting from the baseline. This one was outstanding in terms of drama and super offensive tennis. Surely, on of the Best in history in my opinion🙂

Rafael Mertin Don't worry It was intentionally a stupid reply to an even more stupid comment. Federer had set and match points here way before Kyrgios could choke, and the US open match was just a beatdown and Kyrgios didn't have himself in a position where he could get nervy. Madrid and Beijing 2017 against were classic tanking from Kyrgios, just giving up on every ball and volleying on every serve to lose as fast as possible. Now wipe your tears.
