Collapsing the maul was the final penalty which caused the penalty try to be awarded, but there had been a lot of penalties in the Welsh half before that, including a yellow card that was given out just before this. So, without those lead up penalties and the yellow card, the sacking of the maul probably wouldn't have been enough to justify a penalty try.

You still have to control the ball, it wasn't clearly the case (different for a maul, you don't hold the ball) so he just gave the advantage. On scrums the penalty try is usually given after 2 or 3 faults close to the line. Garces is one of the best referee and he does is job the same way for both team...anglo-saxons are always surprised when the ref is not rooting for them !

@Shailesh Prasad This is where you are getting a little confused by being in control and having no control. Owens had no control, I admit that but that means the outcome was not seen as deliberate. He was lucky the Fijian landed on his back. If he lands on his head/neck then straight red card but he doesn't. Having no control is risky but it is clumsy rather than dangerous or aggressive. Being IN control and driving someone into the floor (like the Italians did vs. Springboks) is a much more dangerous offence, but Owens was nowhere near this due to 2 mitigating circumances: 1. He had no control, perhaps due to speed of the attacker which made the challenge clumsy rather than deliberate. 2. The fijian landed on his back rather than his head or neck.

I'm french and I think the odds are greatly in favor of Wales. We do have the players to beat almost anybody on one game, but lately we haven't be able to play decently more than half a game (against Argentina and Wales for example), or even less (against USA or Tonga). I hope it will come together for the next game, but as long as we have this coach it's very unlikely. However I'm really surprised by the lack of success of Ireland and Wales (and Scotland a little bit as well) in the WC history. These nations are performing in the 6 nations just as well as England or France (depending on the time you look at obviously, but let's say the WC era), but not at all at the WC : England : 1 win, 3 finals, 4 semi-finals, France : 3 finals, 6(!) semi-finals, Ireland : nothing at all, Wales : 2 semi-finals, Scotland : 1 semi-final. So don't bury us too fast, you never know what can happen with France in a WC ;)

A couple crucial calls went against Fiji and really changed this game for them. Wales deliberate knock down was ruled just a knock on, should have been a penalty to Fiji in front of the posts. Wales tackling Yato without the ball, Yato still managing to tackle a welsh player then being penalised for tackling while on the ground. The replay showed he wasn’t on the ground when he tackled the welsh player and he himself was tackled without the ball. Should have been a penalty to Fiji inside Wales 22, instead it was a penalty to Wales, not long after that Wales scored a try. So the bad call changed the match.

He has no defensive skills and his conversion kicks are useless,and the sad thing is that the Fiji side does'nt have anyone that can replace him and be better.
