Love your content Nick! One thing I learned with my moss poles it I was always better off putting a pole in with really small plants/cuttings. If I put a large plant against the pole sure it had some support but it never established any decent roots into the pole, there was no real benefit to having the moss pole there, it would have done as well with a plain stick.. But if I cut that big plant up and put all the cuttings around the base of a moss pole they grow up putting roots into the pole as they go and do so much better.

Hey Nick, a tip that might keep leaves from getting torn, turn the zip ties to the inside towards the moss. Love, Me, who learned the hard way

I make these moss poles and the empty space at the bottom.... pack it full of the substrate you are using in the pot, don't leave it empty. It will help add bottom weight to anchor the pole and provide a space for the roots to work into, which also secures the pole.

Thank you so much for this! I just got some monstera that desperately needed poles. So you know, the sugar on the leaves of Philodendron are extrafloral nectaries. The plant produces it to attract ants that eat pests. It's a symbiosis thing 😊 Love your chanel and thanks again!

Oh my gosh, you're moving again? I have so many plants now I can't even imagine moving, and you have at least three times as many as me! And besides that I have other stuff like furniture!! Although I would love to have a house that has a lot more light, it's just not going to happen.

I had to use an entire Uhaul truck just relocating for my houseplants when I moved, and I don't have nearly as many as Nick.

The easiest way I usually use when potting a large moss pole like that in a pot is to tie the plants onto the moss pole first then kinda just back filling the pot. But using a light fixture works just as well.😂😂

Hi Nick! You're so much fun to watch, you had me laughing a lot! I was skeptical when you said you could extend the moss pole, but can see how sturdy it is. I use that velcro tape, too. It's so handy and easy on the plants. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for showing me this today- now I’m sold that I need to make my own moss pole- my wooden Amazon pole rotted in my M. Delicioso and it fell over- now I’ve got it backed against a wall and wondering what to do- this is what I’ll do!

I'm definitely making my own moss poles from now on. I've purchased a set, but I'm not overly happy with them. I think I'll replace them. I like the idea of the leaves being able to really take hold of the moss with no cardboard tube in the middle to get in the way. Thank you.

My Philodendron Erubescens Red Emerald was COVERED in extrafloral nectaries (EFN). I couldn't touch it without my hands getting sticky. 😂 It wasn't until I put it outside for the warm months that it stopped producing them! The only difference I can think of is that it has better airflow outside due to wind. I've no idea if that's actually what is making a difference, but I'll be experimenting with better airflow if/when it starts to get EFN again once it's inside for the cold months.

i received a beautiful clipping of a philo Hope. She is 17 inches high, with tons of roots & just 3 large leaves at the top. I grow in LECA & I am concerned about her flopping over. Should I plant her & just stake her with a stick? or would she be better off on a moss pole? Thanks for all you do, for all of us

Would you water through the pole? water the plant normally as if there were no pole, so it’s sucks the water up the pole? Or does it even matter if the moss drys? I normally use pvc pipe with coco fiber baskets I get on clearance.

The happy hip wiggle at 9:40 got me. 💜 I do have a question or merely a curiosity about the joint connection of the poles. What would you think about leaving 2" or so of dead space at the joining end of the top pole and overlapping the mesh material onto the top of the existing moss pole then zip tie? I am thinking those of us with ninja cats might benefit from the extra stability? I am a new subscriber, and am really enjoying your channel. 💜

Nick, I'm surprised you did put them in a bigger pot. I'm not an expert but I just would have picked a bigger pot because it seems like it would have gone better with such a high Pole. And then I wouldn't have had to repot it for a long time. I know Hoya like to be root bound but do philodendron like that too? I hadn't heard that.
@MaryGatdula
@MaryGatdula 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is, you don't want your plants transfered to too big of a pot because it's easier for them to get root rot.
@AbbiZika
@AbbiZika 2 жыл бұрын
Not Nick, but philodendron do usually love being root bound!:) I don't repot them until they REALLY need it. The way I can tell they will need a new pot, is if I see roots growing out the drainage holes or they look like they will get tangled up and won't be able to unwind themselves into new soil 💚

Calling your light fixture obnoxious while it is holding your philodendron, right when it is the only thing that prevents the plant from tumbling off the edge of the kitchen counter... Dangerous, Nick, dangerous.

I heard the moss pole gets really messy if you don't keep the moss wet
@mevh6601
@mevh6601 2 жыл бұрын
You really want the moss pole to stay moist - that's what will nourish the roots that grow into it. The moss pole and roots become an extension of the root system.
