Very impressed with this guys work and knowledge. He answered my interest in either Big Stretch or NP1. I feel both are excellent products. Big Stretch is slightly cheaper but negligible in cost. Thanks Idaho Painter. We are in Charleston SC.

I spent 2 days prepping and caulking after watching this. Big Stretch is an awesome recommendation! I did 1 tube with the GE stuff and it looked terrible painted and was annoying to apply. My house looks amazing. We rolled and back brushed grooved cedar shake shingles. My house looks like a new house because of all your tips! Thanks!!!!

You are caulking a lot with a manual gun have you tried a battery powered or air caulking gun? I have have had my eyes on battery powered but never had a justification because I don't do it so much. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Chris. I love all of your tutorials!! Do you think that the Big Stretch would be got for wetter conditions? We live in the Great Northwest. Vancouver Washington. Our local Sherwin Williams recommended Shurmax and or a 1050? My good painter friend swears by Quad Max but I swear it cracks. I Have a project and I’m primarily focusing on hardie board butt joints prior to painting. House built 1999. No tin shingles behind joints. Thank you for any feedback!

Great video! A couple things to think about tho...when you completely caulk in the soffit that has few or no vents any roof leak or ice dam has no where to escape if it runs down the bottom of the roof decking, had this happen a couple of times at some condos I worked on and it resulted in very rotten soffits and damage to the inside of the house walls since there was no Tyvek. So I no longer caulk the outside edge of soffits so any water has an escape route.

This is the exact reason professional caulkers get so many calls about failed caulking on homes. Painters insist on using water based sealants on exteriors. Acrylic latex ( big stretch can call it anything they want it us still water based and is still garbage as an exterior sealant) should NEVER be used on exteriors. Residential caulking lasts an average of 7 years. ( sometimes as little as 3 or 4) Commercial caulking lasts an average of 20 years( often 30 or more) A big part of the reason is painters use the lowest quality caulk/ sealant availalable. In general they know very little about caulking Anyone that tools exterior caulking on exteriors with there fingers is unqualified.
@nothingsimpostleble1593 Жыл бұрын
In 7 years they'll call paint again, who cares
@genecarden780 Жыл бұрын
@@nothingsimpostleble1593 first of all a lot of times ( not always depends greatly on region and materials) the reason a house needs to be repainted is because the sealant is failing. The fact that we get calls to recaulk ( not paint) homes is evidence of that.Second removing and replacing sealant can add significantly to the cost of repainting. If you only have to replace it every 3 or 4 times you paint you save a considerable amount. Third there is a significantly greater chance of water infiltration, and water damage, when you use acrylic sealants on exteriors.
@nothingsimpostleble1593 Жыл бұрын
@@genecarden780 I live in California so I think we get the biggest transition of hot and cold compared to anywhere else... I've never gotten a call back from caulking cracking... And most pro painters only warranty their jobs for 5 years... So if it's been 5 years then I'm going to need more money.. I'll admit tho, most if not all the latex caulking they make sucks...especially BIG STRETCH... The problem with big stretch is it shrinks once it cure's. We did a bunch of new homes that were hardy board about 4 or 5 years ago.. The Mexicans who were doing siding all used big stretch. I came in and did the paint once the siding was up... Well, on almost 10 of the houses, the caulking shrunk and caused the paint to crack. It's happened to multiple painter friends of mines too... Hardy board doesn't touch up either depends of color bases.. These didn't touch up... I like to use 1050QD caulking from Sherwin Williams..(green tube) it's never ever gave us any problems and never had any call backs... Honestly most painters don't even know how to Caulk correctly, let alone paint, or squeeze a trigger for that matter. How the hell are you going to take advice from a premadonna like this dude 😐
