My grandfather was a union plasterer for years from 1950s. In all he did it for over 40 years. I saw some his work that is still there today. It is beautiful. He passed away in 2014 when I was 20 and was in poor health his last few years. I always had the desire to learn from him. This is the one of the closest ways I can get to learn. I wish I could join the plasterers union myself as an apprentice but its a lot of traveling and with a young family that would be hard. Thank you so much for all of these videos. Good morning NK, LOL, but true. For example-They used Marmorino plaster in northeastern Italy, especially in Venice, where the canals were to give the walls extra water protection against that water/moister. Here in the USA, they call it Venetian plastering, which is a confusing name. What is Venetian plastering? It's a mixture of lime and crushed marble. I feel the public would be better informed if Venetian plaster was termed/named what we Italians call it Marmareno plaster. Or, perhaps, "lime and Mable finishing by applying multiple coats." While on this subject, Veneer plastering should be called "multiple coats lime plastering." Veneer plaster is simply, Lime plaster! The word Veneer plaster is misleading and has been confusing people, especially plasterers, for as long as I've been in the trade. I have been asked at least 15 times what kind of plaster, Veneer was, so If I was asked that many times' hundreds, If not thousands are still confused, Okay, maybe millions are confused.🤷♂️ If you think about it the word, "Veneer" does sound like a mineral mined for use on a wall rather than a process or application.🤔 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Kirk great video! I think the most important thing you described was about the importance of understanding the suction characteristics of base coats; this also relates to brick laying. Too much suction because of insufficient water not only makes spreading laborious but often results in poor bonding and and sometimes plaster not setting properly because the water was sucked out before it could set hard (guaging plaster usually has a retarder in it which gives the base more time to suck out the finish coats ). I have also seen the opposite where the finish coat was put on before the base was dry which resulted sometimes in a rotted finish coat or honeycombed shrinkage cracks. At the end of the day, experience and trial and error is the only way a person has to get and understanding of suction. Great work professor!

@@StuccoPlasteringGold Bond Gypsolite Plaster is a lightweight gypsum basecoat plaster mixed at the plant with correctly sized and proportioned perlite aggregate, requiring only the addition of water on the job. It is manufactured to be trowel applied as a basecoat over gypsum or metal lath. It's light as a feather but turns hard as a rock. Whats kind of neat about it is when you mix it there is a reaction between the water and the product and it becomes light "Hot Mud". better get the lights out though, because for a nice flat wall that's paintable, she better have no errors. Or each trowel full will absorb too fast. @@-ox9zz Limewash is not for this purpose. Lime washing has been used for centuries to coat branches, bricks. rocks etc. that are used for walls to keep them from rotting plus sealing them from bugs getting into homes. Lime washing is getting lime putty or slaked lime adding water until you have a liquid paste, then brushing that lime over any and everything. Thus it becomes limestone again. what you need is a quality primer and paint like Sherwin Williams.

Love your videos! Regarding the question about lime and veneer, it may sound silly to you, but for those of us who are trying to learn it really isn’t that silly. So, perhaps to rephrase the question, how do we capture a beautiful old school plaster finish to use with our plaster and lathe walls? I would like to preserve all the qualities, both practical and aesthetic, of turn of the century plaster and lathe. I can’t stand what I am coming to think of as any gypsum based product, but I am not so sure that is correct? I will work for a hard, strong, durable finish that will stand up to moisture if it has to. You are a rare guide in this world of drywall, keep it up, I love it! By the way, my most recent foray has been with mix of lime putty and gauging plaster, but its fast and challenging for this novice. I am learning about the “fat” fast.
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Greetings Early, the product you want is like this homeowner, a coat of Structo-lite followed by a coat of lime plaster. I like Diamond as my lime plaster finish personally.😉 FYI, lime plastering is gaging plaster or white coating. Technically you add some lime plaster into straight gypsum or tapping mud the stuff in the box on the floor in this video. Why Bother? Instead, just use lime plaster, which is usually USG's Diamond or imperial Lime finish in this country, the USA.🤔 What is difficult here in the USA is the terminology/language of the products. Since I understand what they call the plastering materials in the UK vs. the USA, it's easy to combine them. FYI, diamond or imperial are usually found at your nearest plastering yard's so google plastering yards near me.😉 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. My DIY project has a 5' x 5' Durrock Concrete board surrounding a Gas Fireplace, which is set inside a Drywall constructed wall. The Cement wall portion is used to meet non-combustible requirements around the fireplace, near the firebox. Since I am trying to avoid using brick tile; your video caught my eye. I am guessing Skim Coating is a Veneer technique (?); but do I need to wet the Durock Cement wall before I add a Skim Coat?? What is the best material for the Veneer / Skim coat on the Durock portion? Should I fill the Durock & Dry Wall meeting joint with Dry Wall Mud or Mortar product ?

Greetings Jose, excellent question, the owner watned a color added to the finish. To figure out the equation of color pigmentation necessary for the veneer, lime plastering would have taken forever and then not been perfect. We provided a finish tougher than straight lime, and that color was engineered to be accurate. Adding Portland cement to any lime finish makes it stronger. Hi Kirk, I’ve been watching your videos for years and years, learnt a lot, big fan! One thing I was wondering, over here in England we have superflex trowels (I’m sure you do in America too), which are used in the final stages to polish the plaster and have flexible blades to assist in that and save our joints etc. However if we use them too soon ie laying on or flattening in, the wall ends up with ripples in it and doesn’t look great when painted. My question is, if the pool trowel/straight ended pool trowel you use is flexible (I’m assuming they are), would that not leave the same ripples or unflat walls that can occur when superflex trowels are used too soon? I’m referring to multi finish plaster/veneer in this instance. I’ve wanted one for years but I’ve not been able to find the kind you use in this vid for example in England. Hope I made sense and thanks for all the hours of entertainment and knowledge you’ve passed on!

@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Greetings MG, there is little demand for multiple lime coats mixed with marble here in my area. Veneer means a topcoat of lime putty slaked lime or similar.😉 Venetian means a few top coats of not just lime but marble dust also, as its better for repelling moister as in Venice Italy, where the homes are built on water canals.😏 In Italy, it's called Marmorino instead of Venetian. as it has crushed marble mixed with lime, plus the Italians make it sounds cooler.😏 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Love the videos Kirk! One question I have that I haven't seen addressed regarding fireplaces is if you can still use the fireplace! According to USG they say the plaster is only recommended up to 125 degrees... What I was working on was durock board in front of the brick fireplace and then wanting to plaster just like the beautiful job shown here. I'm just wondering if people do this for the look or can still set a nice roaring fire!
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
I've plastered about 50 fireplaces, I never had someone call me and say, the stucco is failing or melting. My own fireplace I get it so hot, the oak wood embers would melt glass, and make iron even glow red firery hot, didn't do a thing to the stucco I applied. I'm not debating USG, but I haven't heard of such a thing until now, LOL

Great video! Was the real problem here that the guy used 2 coats of Structo-Lite, or that it was too thick? I'm planning a small ceiling patch where the base coat will need to be about 1". I'm thinking clean really well, Plaster-Weld, add some wire lathe where needed, 1" of Structo-Lite, then Diamond Finish coat. I've haven't seen you add all that water to the base coat before. Maybe it was timing? Can I do the structo lite this weekend and the finish coat next weekend, and not have to re-wet it like you did here? Thanks!
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Good evening Murry, LOL, there was no problem. 😉 I'm explaining that for me to relax and not let the wall beat me up. I could use skill instead of strength by simply wetting the base coat. Plus, do a better job.😉 If one or ten coats were applied, It would have made no difference to me. Fact. No matter how thick the wall is, when it stopped absorbing the water, and the water started running down the wall, the wall was ready for the next coat. This is what we plasterers call "natural Mechanical bond" it also does not matter what stucco or plastering product was used. The same principle is necessary for diminishing/killing the suction. This gives any applicator the time to relax and apply his finish coat without worry about the existing base-coat sucking the moisture out of the finish coat. Its important as the texture and color can change if this step is not understood and dealt with. @@StuccoPlastering Ah-ha! Re-watched and yes indeed you made that point! If I do base coat this weekend and finish coat next weekend I'll wet the base coat first and use my "skill" for the finish coat.. lol I got lucky and found Structo Lite, Diamond finish, Larsen Plaster Weld, and a green bucket scoop at my local supply house. I picked up a bag of Imperial base too so I could try plastering on some drywall. I've done plenty of drywall tape/mud but hate the dust and want to try this out. Dywall (Sheetrock, plasterboard) is over 100 years old but came to fore post 2nd World War when they needed to build homes quickly and cheaply for the masses. And the subdivisions with their same facade and white picket fences was born. Drywall as a building material is complete crap (in my opinion) but it does have a lot of nice properties (fire rating, sound and insulation) Also cheaper to install and finish than most other materials on the market (and like you say, anyone can do it). Watching you handle that trowel like Gene Kelly dances with his umbrella in the famous movie. Hypnotic and entertaining.

Hey Kirk...been watching the videos for sometime now and the content is great... a couple quick questions. Why would you decide to use structolite vs diamond? Preference? And I believe you would want a base coat first for diamond finish? Is stuctolite it's own base and finish coat if you wanted it to be? Can you apply diamond over structolite and would you even want to? I appreciate the knowledge!
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Morning Brian, excellent questions, ask, and ye shall receive.😉 Structo-Lite is a base-coat plaster. Which provides insulation values. Can Structo-lite be finished? The bags say no, as it's really sticky stuff and will drag if you try and make it smooth.😉 We, plasterers, know that if you have a sponge float in your left hand and each stroke of the trowel is cleaned off and wet with the float your holding in your left hand, then it can be smoothed out better as a wet clean trowel won't drag the sticky plaster. The choice for LaHabra stucco as opposed to Diamond lime finish. The owner wanted a grey color and more strength, so I used a Portland-based exterior cement plaster, Stronger than a lime coat as it has Portland cement in it plus lime and sand. Diamond and Imperial lime finishes made by USG also have base-coat lime plasters too, but structo-lite makes a better base as Structo-lite has insulation values that the lime plaster base coats do not. Lastly, the word "veneer" simply means a thin application, all bags that say "veneer plaster" worldwide should change this foolish title as it's confusing to everyone, including most professional plasterers. Instead, the bags should remove the word "Veneer" and be labeled simply "Lime plaster" with the ability to achieve two coats or more coats or finishes. 🤔I suggest to USG and all other manufacturers that this ridiculous and confusing word/term, "Veneer," be removed and replaced or re-worded as "veneer" is misleading as hell. Again if these bags were called what they are, Lime plasters, more sheet rockers would use them; thus, sales would no doubt triple. Plus, now, homeowners would finally understand what the hell they are buying and why. Kirk Giordano Plastering

@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Susan, I don't know without viewing your home.😉 Or more than likely, dust formed on the caps or parapets roofs or other areas then the accumulated dust which becomes dirt washes down the wall during a heavy rainstorm.🤷♂️ Or I have seen red clay terra cotta tile also where the nail heads bleed down the walls creating rust spots. Keep in mind the rounded terra cotta clay tile is set with galvanized nails, which aren't supposed to rust. However, when the nail-head is hit with a hammer that can remove the galvanization and cause the head to rust, that rust when the rain continues to hit it will bleed or fall straight down, often hitting the wall in weird looking straight lines like the string of Christmas lights. I've seen this about 5 times.
