Thank you for these videos. I am learning a lot from them. I truly appreciate them. My mom's basement's wall is crumpling and other areas are cracking. Because of her low income I will assist her by repairing some areas on my own. I am a female and the videos have been very useful. I take notes while you talk so I can later go back to them. I plan on working on my mom's basement in the next few weeks so I am watching all your videos to learn from. Keep up the good work and I wish you in Delaware because we could use honest companies like yours. Thanks for these!!!

Evening Aidigita, thank you, we are really transparent as a plastering company as it's common courtesy and wish to advise well. If you're low on funds as most folks are worldwide, the good news is cement plaster vs wood is extremely cost effective, or cheap to purchace. The real deal is learning how to apply and what kinds of cement plasters are best for your needs, Googling what you're doing should answer all those questions. I'm sure you will do well as both of my daughters caught on fast enough, tip your arm will feel like it's going to fall off within 15 minutes, this is normal, stop for a while then start again when your arm and shoulder feels rested, A cardinal sin is to think you are too weak to do this work, Even big men with arms the size of my legs when first starting can only spread stucco for about 20 to 40 minutes without feeling their arm is imploding, if this happens and it will, relax, then start again. Cheers, kirk giordano

you're absolutely right Kurt if you have an unstable Foundation or place you're going to have stress fractures in NE Portland type cement you render lime plaster is a little more forgiving especially with the addition of fibers. one of the industry's remedy to this age-old problem was the EIFS systems. however these products take a tremendous amount of energy and resources versus yield and sustainability aspects. and then you have durability issues so where you may gain an advantage with EIFS compromise overall structural strength. many contractors here would either mechanically fastened or clad through a polymer-based adhesion extruded polystyrene to the block to help remedy these issues. I could imagine any type cinder block stucco application in the state of California would be risky my goodness with all the earthquakes you guys have out there I'm surprised there's a stucco home doesn't have fractures and cracks but I bet it keeps you guys busy. :) cheers Michael D

Howdy Michael D, yes, this BMI cement plaster is the way to go on some homes that I can see are on faults or are moving for what ever reason. Usually it's underground streams that move them like what you see in this video. Alameda has many of these streams under homes, sometimes I just have to see the degree of hairlineing to realize this is going on. Here in California they a few brick or cinderblock homes built in the last 100 years, no doubt from the S.F. earth quack of 1906, but I have stuccoed my share that were pre that time. Here in California all that is necessary is to clean the bricks or cinder blocks apply a bonding agent if painted, than apply a coat of stucco. Best wishes, Kirk giordano

Hello Kirk, thanks very much for your outstanding educational efforts. I have my trowels etc ready to give stucco a shot but as you say 70% is choosing the right material. I have a FL room in St Augustine that was an addition ie 2 walls wood and 2 walls old exterior block house which are painted. I demoed the wood walls which were compromised and just had cinder block columns replace that, as there will be 3 sliding doors installed. DImensions are 22' x 10' x 9'. The sliders and an open archway eat up a lot of wall and leave about 400 sq ft to be rendered. What I'd like to do is stucco the interior of the room ala a man cave/high traffic room as it will be the exit point to the patio outside. I haven't come across a specific video where you do this out of the about 10+ hours I've enjoyed:) From what I understand, I'll at least need a bonding agent over the two painted walls but likely not need any lath. My question is what reasonably priced material would be suitable and do I need to prepare the new bare block walls with anything? LLAP:)

I have a stucco house in MN. Constant fluctuation from just the freeze thaw cycle. My house is showing verticals cracks thru paint down by brick which is the bottom base. I intended to paint but wondering if it’s gonna take more to cover. I guess I’m not looking to spend lots as I do intend to sell next year. But what I do I’d like to do well. I’ve been thinking about and toying with ideas like adding clay and plaster to concrete to make more pliable and able to smear on. Is that a thing? I’m a painter of acrylic on canvas and have don’t my own stuff on interior walls that worked. Thanks for a reply! BTW I’ve watched several of your vids which have given a diyer like me hope that I can do this stuff! Thnx

Have you ever mixed clay into cement?
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Eil, no, as clay is much weaker than stucco; What is stucco? It's usually Portland cement mixed with sand. Whats Concerte? It's usually Portland cement mixed with rocks. What's Cement? Cement is the binder, or you can call it an "adhesive or additive" that binds the materials.👩

Hi Kirk, why do I get streaks when using sponge float on skim job with dragging for rough finish. Not letting dry enough before hitting it with sponge? Wrong sponge? Mortar not course enough. Can't figure out. Can u tell me what could be reason. Also how often should you rinse mud from sponge?
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Howdy MrTruthislight, some finishes don't have the float lines, so when we are matching one of these finishes or I simply don't wish to leave float marks, an example would be matching a light dash finish there are no float marks. How you remove the float marks or lines is quite easy, first float as usual, then come back to the areas where you can still see the marks, clean you float well allow only a minimum or water on it, I tap the float in the inner bucket to remove the excess water myself, then with the somewhat dryer float lightly hit these areas again with a sweeping motions that barely touches the stucco to remove just the float lines, Takes a bit of practice. Cheers, kirk giordano Plastering

Great videos Kirk! It's great to learn from someone with knowledge and experience. I wished you worked in Chicago; I have a nightmare job where I am thinking of doing some brick rendering on myself; because everyone I try to get out to do repairs looks at me like I'm crazy. I live in a building which is 100+ years old and so is the building next to me, which is only 13-14" away. Both buildings have and need some major brick repair. The buildings are 3 stories high, the worst wear is at the bottom of the walls due to water damage that has leaked down because of leaking gutters, which are now fixed. Any ideas or tips to do or make this job easier? I am planning on doing as far as I can reach on the bottom, maybe build a couple wooden 2x4 ladders, 12" wide and work my way up to the second floor. The problem is there isn't much room to work, I wish I was skinnier for this work. You can't bend over in this space, but there is enough room to bend sideways. I will probably start this next spring after making a plan of attack. So far, here's what I am thinking of doing. Remove loose debris with power washer, if I can get in there with it. Next, use some type of bonding agent and figure out what type of stucco cement to use. I know this is going to be a painfully slow process, but dems is da brakes! Thanks for any suggestions...

Hello Kirk, THANKS so much for all your videos. I've been binge watching to find a solution and my head is spinning! Do you have a ratios for a mix that could be used to cover underground EPS foam on a basement foundation? The foundation is 1887 rubble (random rocks discarded from the still active mines- yes, we can still feel the blasts - like mini earthquakes) on a hill with heavy snow in the winters, in an area remote enough that products like BMI 690 are not stocked and shipping costs more than the product. Sand, rock and portland cement are readily available, and I can get most additives from the internet (often with your link on Amazon - but can't find aluminite!). I am also sending an email with details, pics and phone, since you said you would rather talk than write. Thanks so VERY Much!
