Brad - I have three fake dormers with windows inaccessible from the inside where the previous film is failing (house is 15 years old). Need a dark, shiny tint that can be applied from the exterior. Is there a good 3M product or any other manufacturer you can recommend?

What about the thicker (6 mil) anti-graffiti film? Does it do anything to protect against breakage in a riot situation, such as impacts from rocks?

We're in Southern California. We had window tinting installed on the inside which helped blocked the sun, but you're right about the window manufacturer voiding the warranty so we removed them ourselves after 18 yrs. Next spring, we're having all windows replaced and would like to get outside window tinting to block UV rays. How long do they last?

I have just 2 standard glass rectangular flat skylights on an old cottage in Michigan. Can I install exterior window film myself (I'm handy) as I have easy access to the roof? They are letting in a tremendous amount of heat in the Summer.

Really recommend hiring a pro because it is very difficult to install on skylights. If you do it yourself you’ll need enough material to do several tries. You will also need to seal the edges with silicone to make sure that no water can get in there. Generally it is very difficult for a non-professional dealer to even get exterior Window Films. Do not install interior Window Films on the outside because it will only last a few months. Good luck!

Excellent discussion. I would like to install this on my Airstream trailer. Considering the 3M Prestige 70 product. What might be the issues I would encounter? Thank you for your response.

Hi Phil, An interior install may be better on an Airstream, if access will allow. I'd recommend taking photos and sending to a local 3M Crystalline automotive tint dealer (similar product to 3M Prestige designed for automotive). They can advise on product, shade, and installation recommendations. I would not attempt to DIY window film, especially on curved glass. It takes years to perfect this process.

Would exterior grade film be recommended on the inside of a doublepane window inside a shower? I live in a very humid area with a ton of rain and I will need something on both sides of the window to make it act like tempered glass. I'm getting dual-pane windows with argon in them so I'm looking for something sturdy to install.

Shower steam does not affect interior film. As long as running water isn’t on it you should be fine with one layer of interior film. Let it dry for 3 days after installation before using the shower.

You can use a dual pane safe interior film, but go with a larger film company that carries an established brand like 3M or Vista with a dual pane warranty.

I have patio doors under a solid civer, but would like to have a orivacy film installed on the exterior, as I already have security film on the inside. Is there such a film?

Yes- there are exterior silver mirrored films that will give you daytime privacy. You’re still going to need blinds at night unless you keep the interior lights low and add bright exterior lighting.

Do you have a recommendation for an Exterior White Frost that can hide stud similar to 3M's San Marino (Milky Milk) they have built walls behind each Pane of Glass.

No, there is no exterior frost, but white or black exterior vinyl might work. We are also glaziers so we would pull the glass, add Milky Milky film and re-install.

So between similar interior and exterior films (e.g. 15%).. the exterior film should give better performance... Has there been any temperature measurements at the window for comparison so we can see the differential?

Menny Sa I’m partial to 3M and Avery (Hanitatek). We’ve had great results and longevity from both.

I want to add a film to the outside of my glass door refrigerator glass. I feel it would work better to stop UV before it enters than bouncing heat back through the IGU itself. I only need a small piece 24" x 60" since this is a True brand merchandiser fridge on my patio that does get some full sun on the bottom half for a few hours a day. What can you suggest?

Sounds like a reasonable plan and should work. We'd suggest searching for a local window film company to assist you in the process.

I had exterior window films installed years ago and I can see that mirror effect from outside the house, but why am I still seeing the sun get in every day? the installer said it blocks 96 to 98 percent of uv rays. I am considering to install exterior film again on other windows.

Sunlight is filtered by window film, so you can have plenty of light with greatly minimized UV and heat. This of course depends on the specific film, so we cannot advise without knowing specifics. Exterior films have come a long way and are now a viable option, but only a few brands are made well. May be best to find a reputable local dealer for an in-home consultation.

Hi there. Don't know if you can help and this is within the scope of possibilities for your product. We have a shared gateway to another garden that features an old, wrought-iron gate. My partner would like to mount a mirror on the back of the gate, but thinks it might be more practicable to use a sheet of marine ply, painted aluminium or silver, then covered with exterior film to create a mirror effect. graham pearcey certainly possible. You might consider a chrome vinyl from a sign shop though. Vinyl adhesive is more conducive to metal than film which is made for glass. Good luck. 🍀

Best to hire a professional window film company. If it has become brittle it can come of in a dust-like form and be an environmental hazard.

I am looking for a mirror outside film to apply on a boat windows. The windows are made of plexiglass. The purpose is to block harmful uv, cooling, and privacy. The film must withstand the harsh marine environment (wind, salt, heat, etc.). I will be okay with replacing it every several years as long as it doesn't damage the window. Any recommendations for a quality film that fit the above description? Thanks in advance!

There are unfortunately no viable options for you with plexiglass as the out gassing will cause film to bubble is a short period of time. There are “blister free” options for acrylic and polycarbonate but not in a solar film that meets your needs. Also, removing old film from plexi will usually cause severe damage to the surface of your windows. May be easier to replace with factory tinted glass if that’s an option.

@@CampbellWindowFilm I apologize, I should have provided more information on my RV windows. Not all RV windows are the same, so I have learned. What I have on my RV is dual pane AS2 and AS3 windows. The more research I do the more information I gather and you have been a great source. The glass is made by Statewide glass in IN. I had contacted a guy in my area and inquired about the 3m exterior film and he advised me 3m discontinued it in bronze film I am looking for. As for Avery, I can't find anyone in the DFW area that uses it. Any ideas? Am I able to still use exterior film or should I or should I be looking for a different option? Thanks

Troy Kleasner I contacted right around 12 companies requesting a quote. 2 responded. One wanted north of 2500 and the other although came in under 1k and I told him I wanted him to do it, has not responded to me, even after follow up calls. Not that it is a big deal right now as we had to pack up and head to Indiana for some work on the coach. I will follow up with this guy once we get back next week and see what he says. If he pulls the plug on it, I may attempt it myself. There are a few online companies that sell film, but I need to do more research on them and the brand of film they use. 3m will not sell to the general public and I could not find anything regarding the Avery Dennison film. But I suspect they won’t sell to the general public either. I may only do one window to see what effects on the window. I don’t want to do all the windows and then have them blowing out because the film is putting stress on it. If this guy does do it, then I will give you his information. But I don’t see the point of giving it out if it is going to do nothing but waste someone’s time. So I will let you know in a week or so.

Recently I inherited a Jaguar S Type from my late dad, the car was sitting without use for more or less 5 years. Lots of plastics on the inside are broken or braking apart easily because of the heat and sun that it got all those years. I'm in the process of repairing the car (it was my dad's favorite car, won't sell it), but want to protect the interior from the heat and sun with a ceramic tint. All goes fine until I get to the windshield. I live in the Dominican Republic, here every year we have to pay a circulation tax for every vehicle, they give you a sticker (each year with a different shape) that goes on the windshield. Each year I have to take out the old sticker to put the new one, but it's a pain in the... To get it out, I use a razzor blade to unstick it. If I have the ceramic tint on the insiede of the windshield and put the sticker over the tint, the next year I probably damage the tint taking out the sticker with the razzor blade. Any recommendation on what film can I use on the exterior of the car, I will like it to be a ceramic one, the car is hand wash, no automatic car wash neither pressure hose or machines Thanks for any help!!!

Exterior film will not work on cars. It will deteriorate very quickly and your windshield wipers will destroy it. If possible don’t actually stick that sticker on the glass. Instead maybe it would be possible to use a little bit of scotch tape to hold it in the window? Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you. Best of luck
