Hi TechFox, Fantastic review of the GSX1000. Your voice was clear, concise, and your voice was NOT the typical voice of young people "uptalking" [their voice sounds like EVERY sentence they finish sounds like they're asking a question....soooo annoying]. It was MUCH appreciated. Your knowledge of the product was evident as well. Oh, and I liked your choice of background music score. The volume was the perfect level so as not to be able to tell what, or who composed it. Just that there is some nice music playing behind you. Well done ! I decided after watching your video, that I'm going to go with the Mayflower ARC. It's a powerful little package, and it's capable of driving headphones up to 600 ohms. Whereas, the GSX1000, can only drive cans up to 150 ohms. I recently got in on a Massdrop buy for a set of Mass Senns HD 6xx's. Since the impedance level of these cans are 600 ohms, I have to go with the ARC. However I must say I'm disappointed the ARC doesn't do 7.1 Surround. So your review of the GSX1000 was much appreciated !

Man keep making your videos, you explain things very well. There's no way your channel won't grow, the production quality is crazy. I have the PC 363D which has the in-line DAC, but the surround sounds very artificial. Very curious as to how it compares to this. Might have to get a DAC at some point. This thing seems to be nearly $300 AUD.. that's insane. Very nice though.

Appreciate that! But yeah, $230 USD is a bit steep. You can find a cheaper amp elsewhere that could perform as well but I imagine it won't have the nice features that the Sennheiser has (capacitive touchscreen, profiles, etc). The sound is better than what I hear on my 373Ds but I'm not sure how that compares to your 363Ds. Thanks for watching!

String an external sound card into into a tube preamp with analog bass and treble controls and then into a dac+amp and lastly into a standalone tube amp and everything sounds 10x better and the sound stage is much much wider. That's what I did with my setup and the experience has been insane for gaming,movies and music. I can't go back to using just one piece of equipment for my setup anymore.

You need both, a good headset and a dac / amp device to drive those headset so you can get the most out of it. If you buy a cheap or low quality headset then you don't need dac / amp, the soundcard on your motherboard or a Sound Blaster sound card will work fine.

*READ* So, for a while now I have been using the Logitech G633 Surround Sound gaming headset and I've loved it. I used to hear many people complain about how gaming headsets are terrible and you should get a headphone and an amp with a microphone on your desk. I got the microphone; however, I believed people were just being 'proud' about their audio equipment, and that there really is no sense to what they were saying. Those 'gaming headsets' didn't apply to me because I believed my Logitech ones were spot on, but something in me did want to try something new. I hear praise for open back headphones (especially for Sennheiser, AKG, Beyerdynamic ETC). After weeks of pain staking research I've decided to get the Sennheiser HD 598 SR and pair it with the Sennheiser GSX 1000. Oh. My. Lord. The people were right on both fronts. Solid open back 'audiophile' grade headphones with this DAC/AMP is the best decision I've done. For one, I can now here my loud clicky keyboard again (people on TS were right lol), and second of all, everything just sounds amazing! Hooking this up properly with these headphones and enabling 7.1 was easy and a dream. I decided to test it out on Player Unknowns Battlegrounds (PUBG). Okay.. I need to say straight up. This thing is pretty much wall hacks at this point. I thought so with my Logitech headset, but boy was I wrong. I can hear anything and everything many meters away. I can tell if they're upstairs or downstairs, which in itself isn't a big deal, but the fact I can tell their exact location from 3 or so houses away is crazy. It truly is something to experience. Feel free to ask any questions. (For those interested, I decided upon the HD 598 instead of AKG K7XX. No regrets)

i meant for first person shooters. I've seen people online saying that 2.0 stereo mode is best for pin pointing where enemies are. My first experience with virtual surround sound was with the PS3 Elite Pulse Headset and with surround sound my KD went up to like 3.0 since i knew where everyone was in Call of Duty. I feel like i can pin point the DIRECTION with both modes, but distance, for me, is better "visualized" with 7.1 surround sound. Did you use it for FPS games?

Dark Exsphere I use mine while playing Overwatch on a daily basis. Pretty much wall hacks. I can easily hear enemy heroes coming from not only any direction but also their elevation. This thing BLEW. ME. AWAY. Despite the high price tag, it's totally worth it IMO

Sennheiser GSX1000, only get 5v out of its USB, so it won't get much of a sound.. but it does get good surround sound for gaming, that I'd prefer over a high voltage headphone amp.. it's a matter of pick one.

I am using msi's b150a gaming pro as my motherboard and it's says on their web site that the onboard sound card is capable to support headphones that have impedance up to 600 Ohms. So... i should be ok without this amplifier with sennheiser's g4me zero. Am i right?

Headphone impedance doesn't directly tell how strong amplifier/signal source they need. It tells only their AC resistance and how much current and power they will draw for certain signal voltage. It's the usually neglected factor of "efficiency", which tells how much power is needed for producing certain sound pressure. And efficiency has nothing to do with impedance. For example all different ohm versions of Beyerdynamic DT770/880/990 need same amount of electric power. 32 ohm versions just draw that power as high current from low voltage. 250 ohm ones need some voltage and low current. 600 ohm ones need lots of volts but very little current. For their seemingly low impedance Hifimans are one of the most demanding headphones, because they need much more power than most headphones. And in fact their low impedance means they take that power mostly as current, which is more demanding for outputs than increasing voltage. Also higher end AKGs need more than average amount of power. 250 ohm Beyerdynamics are actually lighter load for output.

It should be noted that the GSX1000 may not be worth the money if you have higher quality headphones over 150 ohms. I had to double amp using a 3.5mm to double RCA adapter to power my HE-560s properly.

Because of lack of HW quality GSX would be challenged to drive even Sennheiser's own high end cans, not to mention one of the lowest efficiency headphone Hifimans. While that cheap ass 2€/$ integrated Realtek would drive headphones equally well as GSX... (assuming it was implemented well avoiding interference) And for lot less than GSX you could get budget sound card with better signal quality and separate headphone amplifier capable to driving almost any headphone. Also all the more expensive, but still cheaper than GSX, sound cards have way beefier output than GSX.

Just buy ASUS Essence STX II 7.1 or something along those lines. They are using top quality components, I use that (an older version though) with HD650 and HD800 and it drives them just fine. Because it can handle even 600 ohm. ASUS uses TI TPA6210A2 as a headphone amplifier, and TI Burr Brown PCM 1792A DAC chip, same as many very expensive audiophile grade external DACs. The rest of the components are of the similar (top) quality.

If I then really feel the need for pseudo 7.1 surround then I can get a DAC at a later date. I just got my GSX 1000 and GSP 600 headset. Set everything up and all was good. Then my mixer seemed to get 'stuck' in surround even when it was set to 2.0. I unplugged everything and went back through the setup process, but then had zero audio to my headset. I'm not sure what's going on with the mixer because I set it up exactly like the first time. If I plug my headset directly into my PC with no mixer the headset works fine with Realtek audio. Any suggestions?

i think the GSP 500 is better then the GSP 600. From what i hear the earcups are nicer on the 600, but you can just replace the 500 earcups with the 600, and you can order the replacement cups off the manufactors website for only 30 dollars. the gsp 500 are open back which is apparently better for surround sound. not even sure you need a GSX 1200 over the 1000, it is the same thing as the GSX 1000 but with one extra chat feature that isn't needed.

Do you think the surround sound of this DAC diminishes sound quality? Every experience that I have had with virtual surround sound headphones has resulted in the sound being muffled or tinny sounding. Tinny as in listening through a tin can.

I know exactly what you're referring to. The nifty toggle between stereo and 7.1 Surround lets you hear a direct comparison on the fly. There are some applications where I prefer the stereo sound (video editing, pod-casts, live streams, tutorial videos). But for music, games, and movies the 7.1 surround sounds amazing.

This information is interpreted by out brains identifying sound bouncing from shapes of our ears, its impossible for us interpret this by singular sound source near our ear. you might perceive something being above only by frequency/tone previously associated with said sound and possition.

Wrong. Binaural sound with accurate for listener's head shape cues produces full natural sound positioning. Problem is in Microsoft screwing PC gamers to arse after WinXP by killing DirectSound, which gave sound card access to game's original sound data with full 3D sound source positions. Instead of lossy 5.1/7.1 channels flattened into plane without height information.

Buy the dac first. Then invest in a real headphone and not a headset (the 'gaming' ones) and a seperate mic like the blue yeti. Good closed back headphones: beyerdynamic dt770 pro 80 or 250 ohms ( the more the impedence the tigher and better the sound but then you'll also need a better amp to get to good volumes, like jds labs atom). Good open back headphones: Massdrop senheiser hd58x jubilee or beyerdynamic dt990 pro. Excellent budget amp dac combo: Topping mx3. I hope this helps

Throw on 7.1 and leave the line clean. I only really mess around with it when they need to be boosted from behind. Dont use the esports mode... Its bad.

It's a bit waste of potential in terms of ohm though. GSP600 has both an internal DAC, and runs at 32 ohms - making the GSX 1000 useful only for its 7.1 surround system. Now i've yet to get mine delivered, so i won't say that it's not worth it (yet) - but you will get a lot more out of it with a higher end drivers in your headset.

Actually person understanding technology wouldn't accept even half the price sticker what Sennheiser is charging for GSX: That Conexant CX20745 DAC/output buffer chip used in it is meant for cheap phones/tablets and barely at level of budget sound cards.

@disadadi this is about a gaming setup. Of course he is going to use a gaming headset... The GS 1000 is for gamers. It emulates 7.1 surround sound really well.

I suppose I need to look for other surround sound options to pair with my HD 599's. I won't pay 200.00 for a shiny on the outside but budget on the inside product.

Shiny outside/brand/fashion is used awfully often to make people pay bloated prices. Like Samsung's ridiculous NVMe prices when there's very little game loading time difference even to standard SATA SSD and any NVMe drive would do as well.While certainly having had some horrible software packages 15 years ago and substandard hardware for the price in Recon 3D at least Creative has improved with now also proper headphone amplifiers in latest sound cards like SoundBlasterX G6. That (+internal SBX AE-5) is couple levels above GSX in both DAC and headphone amp quality, while costing less. Though if just 20% of efforts spent on improving game graphics had been used to improve sound, we would have had head shape customizable HRTF for years. We hear in 3D with two ears because shape of the head (+pinnae) causes direction dependant changes to signal received by both ears from sound source. Hence some average head shape based HRTF is never accurate or even working for all listeners.

SX 1000 supports up to 150 ohm - your headphones? if less or equal good - if more it will not push your headphones to the limit :-)

Is the lower amp power of the GSX 1000 stopping you from buying it? Don't worry - This Story will make you happy.... I called Sennheiser about the GSX1000 and asked " Can you A. connect a second amp to the GSX 1000 and most importantly B. WILL YOU LOSE 7.1 SURROUND IN DOING SO? Question - part A was yes! The second answer was No! NO! No! YOU WILL NOT LOSE 7.1 SOUND IF YOU CONNECT A SECOND AMP TO THE GSX 1000! How did the Sennheiser employee know this? He didn't! So, he voluntarily went to PHYSICALLY FIND OUT! He came back with the good news after 18 minutes. HOWEVER... you must connect to the second amp by using the headphone out of the GSX 1000 via an adapter if you want to keep the 7.1 surround. He also mentioned there was no perceivable sound degradation or distortions. Peace Peeps!

GSX isn't much of an amplifier or any high guality DAC. Bullshit! I'm not sure if you're sponsored by Sennheiser, or who ever, but I can tell you one thing. I bought both Sennheiser gaming Zero headset and GSX1000 to go with them. The headphones are good, but GSX1000 is a complete waste of money. First, NO, it's not immersive. As soon as you switch surround sound, everything sounds dull, muted and just awful. I tried all settings possible, and even tried tweaking sound in windows. Sounds like a turd, it's it's just a gimmick that doesn't even work well. 7.1 is barely noticeable. Totally not worth the money. Once you switch 7.1 off, it sounds EXACLY the same as if the headset is plugged into the motherboard directly. (I do have a higher end motherboard, so not sure if that makes a difference for some of you). Do not buy, it's a money sucking device that makes 5% difference in surround sound for the price of sounding like shit. Disclaimer: Yes, I did set it up correct, I double checked everything, followed the installation guide, tried it on 2 laptops in addition to my computer (Both Mac and PC). I ended up returning it to Amazon, and will spend the money on ACTUAL DAC/AMP

I had the same issue at first. Zero difference between 7.1 surround sound on and off. Then I realized that my audio settings did not have surround sound enabled. It made a world of difference after that. As far as being sponsored by Sennheiser, yes they sent me the products to review for free but I've already returned them so I'm not sure what I would have to gain by not giving my honest opinion. I'm sorry your experience was not as good as mine. I mentioned in the video that there are other amps out there that perform as well or even better for less money. You're really spending the extra cash on the sleek design and extra features. Anyway, thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!
