Loved the add-on external nesting box. I am a newbie to this. Can you tell me how you calculated the angle to cut the pieces to make the angle for the top?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 жыл бұрын
I installed the horizontal parts of the box first and left about 3” rise above them. I cut the triangle pieces to fill the rise. So it’s about 3” decline from back to front. It’s probably a 2x4 width cut in a triangle with the length being the depth of the box. You just want a little slope so water runs off and not back into the coop. Thanks for watching and commenting.

hi @jerome bee farm & homestead, Looking at your build it looks good, but i see you didn't (in the video at least) mention whether of not you were going to flash the nesting box opening. Stupid question, but what’s the angle of those top 2x4’s you used to place the roof on?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 11 ай бұрын
Not stupid, and I didn't really do a set angle. Seems like I put the center beam about 14" above the sides and went with that, then bird notched my joists. I'd guess it's around 15-20 deg. Quick tip - extend the roof over the egg box. Mine wasn't out far enough, and I cut a little off my roof panels, and could have used that extra length. I wound up putting a plastic membrane over the egg door to keep water out. Good luck!

I'm curious how you keep the rain from i through that crack. I'm looking at rebuilding one and that was one of the issues I had with my other build. I or shingles on it to protect the wood but I'd still get rain dropping in where the homes where on really wet days and would have to clean it the wet bedding. Great build by the way. You've given me ideas for making my rebuild better.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 жыл бұрын
HI David. The roof overhangs a little to keep most of it out. I guess it gets in there on a really hard rain. I've never noticed the bedding wet though. Maybe the angle of the lid forces the droplets to go down to the edge. I keep the nest box on the right hand side full of stuff all the time and also a bag of DE, and never noticed it wet. It's been a good coop so far. This will be the third year. It could use some more water seal/stain in a few places. Thanks for watching.
@davidneil7307
@davidneil7307 4 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I've got no over hang on mine. I'm in the Seattle area and we can get some sideways rain here sometimes. The bedding's not always wet when it rains, just after long hard storms. I've thought about trying to build a little gutter over it but haven't figured out the right way to do it. Maybe after I rebuild it I'll get an idea. The original build was pressboard and I never got around to painting it so it's starting to weather and some screws are pulling out.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 жыл бұрын
You could probably put a piece of thin flexible plastic over it. Or from the bottom put a piece of adhesive weather strip in the crack so it compresses when it’s shut.
@aaronwilliamson4045
@aaronwilliamson4045 Жыл бұрын
I caught the same thing.. One way to avoid the crack is to attach a 2x4 on the coop 1/2 inch or so above box and hinge the lid to the 2x4 with the lid under the 2x4 and covering the nest box in place.
@MeSing2U
@MeSing2U 8 ай бұрын
